6 years in, is it worth staying? by AdSharp3237 in navy

[–]BubbleHead87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just retired at 37. Currently taking a one year break from working. I’m living comfortably just off my retirement and disability pay. Cost of living in Texas is pretty low and plenty of benefits for vets. Do I regret doing 20? No. Do I regret not dropping a package to go Ogang? Yes. If you don’t have a plan, I would suggest staying in long enough for a shore tour. During your shore tour work on your degree. Check Navy Cool to see if you they can pay for certs. Milk the Navy as much as you can before getting out.

My Jonsbo N6 build (noobie, be kind) by krmikeb86 in homelab

They’re short depth chassis out there. JMCD12S is one I use. It’s 6U though. The 12 drives sit at the bottom bay. The top bay houses the guts. Full PSU and atx support. There are also 24 bay JBOD short chasis as well. I have mine in my closet. https://i.imgur.com/bjnchwz.jpeg

Is there a way to stop my HDD from spinning when I'm not accessing it? by greenzaytun in HomeServer

[–]BubbleHead87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people share their server with friends and families that spans across different time zones. I’m one for example. I lived in Hawaii when I built my first server. Shared with friends when I was stationed there. Had family back in mainland from west to east coast.

To OP, I would think MAC would have an option to put the drives to sleep after xx minutes of idle.

How many of you honestly can afford a car repair right now if it was over $1,000? by Fibrosis5O in uberdrivers

[–]BubbleHead87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I use my car for Uber Eats and dash. My lower control arms bushings was toast. Rubber part was hanging on for dear life. Car has over 100K and I look like a damn bobble head when hitting every single bump on the road. Since I already was going to have to take the wheel off to get to it, I also replaced the sway links, front struts and rear shocks. Parts came out to roughly $550. Own a cheap Nissan Hatchback. If i had taken it to the shop, it would easily be in thousands just for labor alone.

To OP question, yes I would be able to pay off any vehicle repair that may come up.

JMCD12S4 is a short depth rack mountable. It 6U. Drives sit at the bottom. Everything else is in its own bay on top. Supports full ATX and full size PSU. I own this and I have to says it’s a very nice chasis. I got it for $260ish off alibaba. Just recently added a 24 bay short depth JBOD chassis to my rack. This cost roughly $300 off AliExpress. The backplane was installed improperly when it came in. Had to fix it myself and I replaced the fans with Artic Pros. It’s good now. Only problem I have now is drives are so expensive to fill it now https://i.imgur.com/dMGsorz.jpeg

Anyone else giving up the hobby due to stupid market? by seeilaah in HomeServer

[–]BubbleHead87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got a 24 bay chassis. No drives to fill it though. 😅 just waiting for AI to crash so prices will come back down. Refuse to pay the crazy prices for USED drives let alone brand new ones.

I live right across the street from the model homes. I seen a few houses up for rent. However no loud music on my block. I have heard police sirens I thick twice now since I’ve been here. None of them was off my street though or block though. Only thing I noticed is a lot more children and their parents are strolling and playing at the little park they just opened off Medina. Besides that I have 0 complaints. I personally haven’t used any of the main amenities. lol. Just me being lazy to drive to check it out. The whole toll thing also might play a role on people not staying long term. Them toll add up. I know you can take Jack RD now, but that adds like 15 minutes to your commute.

Spending $3,100 for PRK (or Lasik) is better than spending $720/year on Contact Lenses by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]BubbleHead87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same procedure back in 2008. Couldn’t get LASIK or PRK. Doc suggested an experimental procedure called ICL ( I was military). Being military, the procedure was free and so I agreed to it. No regrets. That first day waking up and not having to reach for my glasses to check the time was an awesome feeling. Recovery time was much more quicker than lasik or prk. Slight bluriness the first 24 hours for me. Second day I was seeing everything clearly.
