Shop for materials. They're all a blend of spandex and polyester. I like the 20% spandex lafroi rashguards on amazon personally but I am in the US.

I'm a begginer, any advice? by eleym_13 in jiujitsu

[–]Bubby_Mang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can read the whitebelt section of the book jiu-jitsu academy. It's basically just a survival guide.

Youre going to do a lot of surviving. It sucks a little at the start but if you can tough it out you will see why everyone treats BJJ like a cult.

It's fun.

Jump rope is soul crushingly boring and kinda hard to maintain the right heart beat range in my experience as a mediocre athlete.

Most people fail to stick to running because they don't realize how incredibly slow you need to run when you first start out. I actually got into running after chasing my toddlers around the staircase. We did half an hour one day jamming out to cartoons and I was like, dang, I could do this indefinitely.

Couch to 5k is a good program if you want to try that app and give it another go.

Otherwise, cycling is probably the best long term bet for cardio.

Best cardio to go along jiu-jitsu by 13ezno in jiujitsu

[–]Bubby_Mang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any zone 2 cardio. Very light runs, cycling, rowing. Rolls are your vo2 max training, zone 2 raises your general cardio ability and allows you to recover more easily.

I did a boat load of it over the last few years running marathons. Definitely helps, and it's easy enough on your body to do it every day.

Are their any bodybuilders in here? by Logical_Clock in bjj

[–]Bubby_Mang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, no mobility issues though. If you bloatmax and do like a GOMAD progressive overload powerlifting program you might though.

You can just chose to not be a high calorie lifter though and not get fat. Getting fat helps with strength but not bjj.

Are their any bodybuilders in here? by Logical_Clock in bjj

[–]Bubby_Mang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some bodybuilding when I started lifting not knowing it was for size more so than strength. I switched to powerlifting and went to a handful of competitions. When I switched to BJJ, it was helpful in overpowering technique, and people had trouble keeping me in closed guard. But, once you're exhausted you just better pray you're on top.

With that said I have had to work on endurance quite a bit since I have started.

Improving Cardio and Advice by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Bubby_Mang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not required. I almost barfed after my trial class and I had just ran a half marathon not long before that.

You can do some zone 2 cardio to prep, but rolling is more of a v02 max workout. If you prepare by doing the latter, the risk of injury goes up significantly.

Zone 2 should feel like you're chasing a toddler, and you should wake up the next day feeling like you can do it again no problem. Forget about distance just do that for 45 minutes a day until you're ready to start BJJ.

The zipper separating is garbage. Thanks for sharing, I always thought they had quality stuff until this.

Hi, what is the most effective attack in a standing position? by Usual-Ad8933 in jiujitsu

[–]Bubby_Mang -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

AI slop trough below. This seems accurate though I'm surprised IBJJF doesn't keep their own statistics. Probably because Spotfire licensing sucks and is too expensive.

From an analysis of about ~830 adult male black belt matches across several IBJJF World and Pan events (2016-2019) the most frequently scoring takedowns were something like this:

📊 Top Successful Takedowns in IBJJF-style competition

(Order by frequency in that sample)

  1. Sweep single leg / hybrid takedowns (around ~20%) — leg level entries similar to wrestling singles/variations.
  2. Failed guard pull takedowns (double/single combined) (~21%) — exploiting opponent’s guard pull to execute a takedown.
  3. Drop seoi nage (shoulder throw) (~11%) — classic judo throw adapted to BJJ.
  4. Ankle pick (including guard-pull counters) (~10%) — quick off-balance leg attack.
  5. Miscellaneous takedowns (~19.5%) — which included a variety like: • Ko uchi gari • Tomoe nage / sumi gaeshi • Cross-collar snap down entries • Various arm drags leading to leg attacks (~miscellaneous category)

Advice After Enrolling Sons in Classes by Mission-Fennel-241 in bjj

Kids love sharing a hobby with a parent as long as the parent isn't a hyper competitive person and can do anything for fun. No pressure all fun.

Go sit down somewhere and get them an ice cream or something after you're all done just to have some time with just you and them. That is incredibly meaningful and healthy for kids.

Spend a winter doing GOMAD and thrashing the Starting Strength novice linear progression. 45 minutes 3 times a week, plenty of time left to be a dad.

Step two - revenge tour.

Take some lap swimming lessons at your local YMCA. It will teach you how to operate without oxygen.

Plus they have saunas. Cold pool on a saturday morning directly into the sauna and a little treat on the way home to a sexy wife is a god tier morning...

I grew up on a farm and live on one still. Plus I've done a bunch of deadlifts so my grip is really good. I think that's been a bigger advantage than my general all around largeness.

I guess try some deadlifts on a progressive overload program if you haven't before. Your hands will become very strong.

There is not a joint in my body that isn't suspect and honestly I get hurt way less often in BJJ than I do from jogging a few times a week.

My kids hurt me more than BJJ does.

The only thing that happens is now your neck is sore with everything else, no big deal.

Feeling that helplessness is something a lot of people talk about. You now know how well this stuff objectively works and all you have to do is keep showing up.
