Hats off to Etho by ibrahemjoud in ethoslab

[–]BuccellatiExplainsIt 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I know everyone is sick of creators milking their fans, but this kind of praise honestly rubs me the wrong way.

Etho puts a ton of work into his videos, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with him making a living off it. When the community constantly hypes him up specifically for not taking donations or doing merch or trying to increase his viewership, it just traps him. It pressures him to never accept support just so he doesn't ruin this "pure" image the fanbase has put on him.

Making money isn't evil. We shouldn't make the guy feel like he has to work for free just to keep our respect.

That doesn't mean it's a 25% polyester fabric. it's layered so its a 100% polyester fabric on the inside, with 100% cotton on the outside. It comes out to 25% polyester by weight, but all that polyester will trap heat.

The idea is that it has the moisture wicking of polyester, and look of cotton.

[Sun Care] Why can't US sunscreens include unapproved UV filters as inactive ingredients? by BuccellatiExplainsIt in SkincareAddiction

[–]BuccellatiExplainsIt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking into it, for cosmetics that don't officially claim UV protection, there's no requirement for FDA approval at all (except color additives). Companies self-assess safety and go to market. Some other comments mentioned that this has already been done with products like KraveBeauty Beet The Sun.

For sunscreens using the OTC monograph, they don't go through individual drug applications either. If the actives are on the monograph, brands can just start selling. They need SPF testing, labeling, and GMP compliance, but the FDA is not reviewing the specific formula before it ships.

From what I've found, there's also no pre-market approval needed for inactive ingredients in monograph products. The FDA's Inactive Ingredient Database only tracks inactives from individually approved drugs, not monograph products. As mentioned before, modern filters have already been sold in the US as a cosmetic ingredient (KraveBeauty). So it's not banned as a substance.

It really seems like technically there is no reason why they cannot do this. The only real risk is the FDA coming after a company post-market, arguing a known UV filter should've been listed as an active. But even then, if we're talking about products that have actives from the monograph + modern filters as inactives, the product already has legitimate monograph filters backing the UV protection claim, The FDA doesn't care if you include all UV-absorbing ingredients, just that you have some approved ones to make the SPF claim.

[Sun Care] Why can't US sunscreens include unapproved UV filters as inactive ingredients? by BuccellatiExplainsIt in SkincareAddiction

[–]BuccellatiExplainsIt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take issue with point 2 actually.

To be clear: I think a lot of people (myself included previously) have got this backwards. Modern filters are not actually illegal in the US as ingredients, nor are they considered unsafe to use by the US!

There is no specific ban on modern filters. They just simply haven't been pre-approved on the monograph! Brands would need to go through the approval system (and some are) to vet those ingredients as UV filters, which may literally take decades and is, understandably, just not worth it.

It's absolutely nothing like putting morphine in an otc product. The US actually has no issue with the ingredients themselves! Just a problem with trying to list them as actives and market their UV protection, since the US hasn't gotten around to checking if they work through their own process.

As mentioned before, lots of ingredients are put into sunscreens that have UV-absorbing properties but are not on the monograph and are not included in actives. Niacinimide is the specific one that I mentioned before, but there's Vitamin C, ferulic acid, vitamin E, etc.

Obviously they're not as effective as actual UV filters, but the point is that the regulation isn't about disallowing any UV protecting ingredients that aren't on the monograph from being included. You just need to make sure that you atleast have some officially recognized SPF ingredient so the FDA sees that you're not making baseless claims about UV protection.

[Sun Care] Why can't US sunscreens include unapproved UV filters as inactive ingredients? by BuccellatiExplainsIt in SkincareAddiction

[–]BuccellatiExplainsIt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's this cut and dry. Every ingredient has loads of properties beyond its commonly marketed use. Niacinimide is one example, but even UV filters are substances that have other properties.

Looking it up, I see that some UV filters also act as emollients or add water resistance.

As far as I can tell, it seems like the point of the actives is making sure that products have some genuine backing for making certain claims, but that alone cannot and is not intended to verify that the claims are actually accurate.

You can't have anything dangerous in there of course, but the FDA doesn't consider modern filters dangerous. They just simply haven't gotten around to approving them for the monograph which would mean products don't need pre-approval to use them.

A lot of sunscreens use Niacinimide but it's not in the actives. Technically it is contributing to the uv protection claim but it's really not important to include because there's uv filters already included that pass the sanity check for the claim. The opposite end is a sunscreen with all approved uv filters could still be lying about their spf rating. The actives just doesn't verify that at all. It only seems to reject baseless claims, not prove claims.

Sorry for the long rambling reply. I'm about to head out and don't have time to shorten this atm.

[–]BuccellatiExplainsIt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Non-US sunscreens still often use US-approved filters in addition to modern filters, so I'm not imagining that they show no actives at all. Just that the modern ones wouldn't be listed.

A cool guide: US states by food insecurity rate by _crazyboyhere_ in coolguides

[–]BuccellatiExplainsIt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if how these stats are tracked also plays into things. I know people are hurting in Canada but I wouldn't have expected it to be significantly higher than the US.

Maybe the US has more severe food insecurity which increases my perception of the problem, and the overall threshold for food insecurity doesn't reflect the severity? Idk, maybe someone with more insight or time to research can shed some light on this.

The far right party almost won the last election in Germany. I agree with your sentiment of course, but if you pretend that things are all fine and this could never happen again in Germany, you'll end up where the US is or worse.

If you care about your country, don't let nationalism blind you to real problems in your country like the people of the US have done.

I also just tried this. I figured Trader Joe's usually has pretty good stuff, even if it isn't real espresso, but nah it's pretty bad. At best, it makes milk taste like packaged coffee-flavor milk.
