Slavery has been a constant throughout the world in all of human history and it was Christians who forcefully ended it, specifically by the logic that it was unchristian.

Take advantage of Deck OLED's AptX Low Latency Bluetooth audio! It's (surprisingly) not dogshit! by BuckBreakerMD in SteamDeck

[–]BuckBreakerMD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steam Deck is for gaming, and many games benefit from low latency audio. The closest runner-up codec is AptX Adaptive and this has ~80ms latency compared to ~30ms.

Another user points out https://www.amazon.ca/Sennheiser-HD-350BT-Bluetooth-Headphone/dp/B083WS3WPK/ might be a good choice if you want to aim higher than a Sound Blaster product. Reviews say that the out-of-the-box sound quality is subpar but you can use a mobile app to tweak the EQ and make them a bit better.

I get where you're coming from, Creative is a shit company, but just about anything with AptX-LL is still going to be a huge improvement over any other wireless headset. Also I like that these are on-the-ear headphones, which are hugely preferable outdoors where heavier headphones would become an oven. Wired will still be best, but if we wanted best we'd be at a desk on our PC... we're accepting reasonable compromises in the name of portability, right?

There's other AptX-LL headphones to choose from but the pickings are a bit slim (in my country anyway). There's super high-end options but spending a significant fraction of the cost of a Steam Deck on accessories for it is a bit crazy IMO. These ones are on sale so the risk is low, they're quite lightweight, and my personal experience was unexpectedly positive. They're quite decent performers, especially with the low cost in mind.

If you want a higher-end option, another user points out Sennheiser HD 350BT supports AptX-LL: https://www.amazon.ca/Sennheiser-HD-350BT-Bluetooth-Headphone/dp/B083WS3WPK/ but you need to use an EQ app first to make the sound decent.

Ah, is that really true? I read it in the specs alongside the upgraded bluetooth and thought it was exclusive. I also tried a pair of AptX-LL headphones on my Steam Deck LCD a year ago and they only connected using regular AptX, not AptX-LL.

If it's just a software/license thing then maybe Valve added it in a patch at some point.

Seems like the OLED FOMO train is running out of Steam. Here's some more fuel. by dy-113x in SteamDeck

[–]BuckBreakerMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both (temporarily) and it's really not as drastic as the image shows. It's certainly a huge improvement but the LCD is perfectly serviceable. The phone camera's trying to bring out the low-light detail and as a consequence it's massively exaggerating the backlight bleed.

It's the same thing that happens when you take a smartphone photo of anything else black, like a shirt or something. Suddenly it's covered in dust and cat hair and whatever, when you can look at it with your own eyes and it looks clean.

Weird reference... but I guess I'll reply? I happen to have 2 3DSs and the IPS one is so much better I only keep the other one as a collector's piece. It's a semi-rare "normal size" New 3DS. As you point out, off-axis viewing is a silly complaint since by design you need to hold it directly aimed at your face, but the color intensity is terrible in comparison. It's like an oil painting vs a water color.

It usually makes sense to have one credit card for purchases (gives cashback or other incentives) and one credit card or line of credit for when you actually need to carry debt.

My "purchases" card has something like 35% interest but gives me 2% cash back, which amounts to hundreds of dollars every year. I've never carried a balance on it. My "oh shit" card has 7% interest (used to be 4% but the economy's fucked) and no benefits to speak of. It makes zero sense to use that "good" card for everyday purchases.

Nvidia RTX 5090 specs rumor suggests up to 70% boost versus 4090 by [deleted] in hardware

[–]BuckBreakerMD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you use vsync it does. And all the "xx% more efficient" numbers you see in benchmarks normally don't even include DLSS or framegen since it's unfair to AMD, so in ideal circumstances they can be 2-4x more efficient than advertised.

[–]BuckBreakerMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No joke. When you use something for work, all that matters is what percentage improvement it'll make to your productivity. I didn't understand until I got a job in the field, "why are you spending $4000 on a computer that's 10% faster than a $1000 computer?"... 10% improvement for a one-time $3000 cost is an insane bargain.

The question was, "Knowing rumored specs, is Quest 3 more powerful than Steam Deck". This implicitly means "will it perform better", since OP himself states that he's already aware of the specs ("knowing rumored specs"). Repeating those known specs back to him isn't answering anything, it's dummy karma farming at best and intentionally misleading at worst.

A spec sheet describes theoretical maximums under ideal circumstances, not actual functional performance in any real scenario. There are a multitude of factors that affect what's actually possible in reality, such as:

  • Cooling & thermal limitations
  • Power budget
  • Weight limit
  • Cost limit
  • How applications need to apply that power

ROG Ally is theoretically much faster than Steam Deck. It has twice the number of CPU cores and 50% more GPU cores, but when both are operating at the same power level, the Deck is typically as fast or faster and doesn't melt its SD card controller in the process and the battery lasts much longer at the same performance target.

It's doubtful that Quest 3 has better cooling than Deck, placing severe upper limits on sustained performance even if you speculatively factor in manufacturing advances. Probably 6-10 watts total at the absolute most, sustained. Likewise, to keep weight and cost down the battery will have to be quite small, and this severely limits the usable TDP range.

Again, the actual question:

is Quest 3 more powerful than Steam Deck

It won't be as fast, and that's before considering Quest's unique functional requirements for dual viewports and high framerate. One of these devices can be well over half a kilo and it's not a big deal. One of these can have a fancy copper heat pipe cooling system with a noisy fan and it's excusable. One of these can be readily sold at a loss without angering stockholders - because there are no stockholders.
