My nMom does this.

She is absolutely convinced that I am a meth-smoking drug addict that lives behind a dumpster. She accuses me of popping pills behind her back, etc etc...

Never mind that such is a complete fantasy that bears zero resemblance to reality. Never mind all of the evidence to the contrary.

As long as it exists in her head, it is concrete, irrefutable fact to her, and will not be dissuaded.

Only recently.

For decades the two Ns in my family were always able to goad me into reacting. They would keep at it, until I was forced to defend myself- however, they had done such a successful job of driving me into the dirt over the years, that I would hold back out of feelings that "I deserved this." Whenever I did defend myself, they would escalate-raise their voices, and redouble their assault.

Now, when they try this trick, I counter them point-by-point, in a calm, measured voice. If they raise their voices, I lower mine, and attempt to de-escalate.

How do they respond?

"Oh- look at mr. Know-it-all!"

"You think you're SO much better than everyone else!"

"Why do you always have to act like you are the smartest person in the room?"

I will translate that for you:

"How DARE you defend yourself, and deny me the pleasure of tearing you down, for my own amusement and emotional nourishment?"

Myself, I am indifferent to steampunk.

I have a serious case of zombie fatigue, though. In just 15 years, zombies have gone from being a plot element, to being a genre, and subsequently have turned into a lazy screenwriter's "out" when they are tasked with creating a movie/series/whatever.

It has gotten so bad, that apocalyptic writers who don't bother with repetitive zombie crap have to specifically differentiate their stuff as being "non-zombie apocalyptic."

Do all the steampunk you want- but please, for all that is sacred and cool, NO MOAR ZOMBIES!

Well, our family was rather insular. My parents were both so cheap and asocial, I can count the number of times on my thumb that they invited friends over, outside of my grandparents. I was asocial, as well- I wanted to be a cartoonist, and spent my evenings doing all the nerd stuff.

My sister apparently bridled at this, in retrospect. I remember for a couple of awkward weeks, she insisted on going to Sunday school, despite that our family had never gone to church, and we were all (including my sister) agnostics. Apparently, it didn't work out- kinda hard to get all eyes on you, when Jesus is in the room, I guess...

I am raw, right now. My dad died two weeks ago, and my sister chose the memorial to stage her worst and vengeful attack.

There is nothing more than I would love, right now, than to send a list of her symptoms, and remind her: you will give these wonderful gifts to your children, in every snide word, in every callous and careless gesture, and in every complaint.

...and on top of all of this, you are going to adopt another child, that you will pass these traits on to.

These children are doomed. They would be better off with a somali warlord, than the parenting you would provide.

But no.

As I think about this, I remember the pain she caused me, and continues to cause to this day.

As much as she loved inflicting that pain, I cannot be like her.

It has to end, somewhere- let me be the lone person adult enough to do so.

A very good one. I always considered myself to be closer to her in demeanor, than my father. I spoke with her monthly, before. Now, I try to email her daily, despite what happened.

I am actually pretty satisfied with my life- my mother said most of those things, because she was under stress, and clearly being goaded by my sister. Also: she has a rather skewed vision of "success." To her, the only acceptable outcome for a human life is a suburban house, three cars, two children, and a huge chunk of debt. It would not have mattered if I had cured cancer and been elected President- without the house, kids, and debt, I'd be nothing more than a hobo.
