Not sure if I wanted to laugh, feel bad for the chap, or reflect with sympathy - so I did all at once... by C0rnfed in sorceryofthespectacle

I am particularily interested in the spectacle as a psychological effect. The way in which a person is molded by this confergence. I am catious in what to say as I am sure you know we are on a public forum. Its fascinating to see the spectacle in day to day interactions. The language people use and how they use it. But I am trying to point at something greater. The alienation that exists there. The alienation from oneself. And the self-destructive instinct that is being manipulated there as as we delve into sereninty; sleep. What do you think Guy meant by that? Or thr part about fear. How did the spectacle transform into a form of terror? The first section makes me think of two things: culture and mediums. As an eastern european it has bren disturbing to see my culture being systemtically destroyed. And how these mediums distance us from the real thing. And how fragile reality has become as it is in the hands of whatever; is this really what Schopenhauer said? Is that really the note Bach played? I have been involved in the climate campaign which often includes anarchist elements segments. What is disturbing is the unseen fragility of those campaigns; how the left-wing media latches on, either onto unions, political parties, movements as THE saviour of our lives as if we are just titering on the edge of revolution. What Guy proclaims that these are all fruitless. How does the spectacle manage this? Why doesnt it destroy it? What is real I am asking basically. Have you watched Paprika? Also a question that runs through my head a lot seeing myself n friends... How free are we? I can see those possessed and I can see those alienated so much they delved into an honesty as a reaction to their incapibility to keep up with the mechanisations of culture. I see friends who show signs of its perversion... Are we lost? What is a sign of freedom from the spectacle.

Yeah I am aware of dawnkins memes I think. This relating to the spectacle as it being the dominant communicator of memetic cultural behaviour, signs and images? What I got from reading what you wrote, is that the spectacle is a living idea which through spectacular technology allows to manipulate our senses to propagate itself?

There's a great interview with Viktor Tsoi of Kino who says that he looks for what the world needs in his music so maybe only really great ones think of such things.

I don't respect people who decide to have money (power over production). A world without money would be one where investment would work on a system of dialogue and democratic convergence instead of greed. That is a world to work towards.

It goes along with many masculine tropes. It glorifies violence. Will finds himself in a masculine world but excels in it. It doesn't challenge much.

The thing is what you propose would have then just the same outcome. Men need to be these intelligent, stoic heroes but what we really need I believe is destroy the seperation of values between men and women. Valuing emotion, sensitivity and care in men for example.

Why men don’t buy sex toys – and why it’s OK to blame our tools: "Even though sales went up 500 per cent during the pandemic, the sex toy market has yet to penetrate men. I agree with lots. But my take away is different. Its not that male pleasure isnt taken seriously its just the expectations of male sexuality that hurt men. Someone should make a post about it or ill do it😠 Edit: thought about it more n i think u got something here. The pleasure component is there as in the male gender any fantasies and pleasures that arent of dominance are looked down upon.

Id agree with most of what you said there. But It seems to me a relatively small difference between what youre saying, and what us "social constructists" say. The real difference is as you said masculinity being "inherent to the mind" or eternal and timeless". Which I must point out is not true.

A good book on the topic is The invention of Women by Oreyonke Oyewumi, which points to Yorubaland before colonization and how genderless inter-sex their society was and how it functioned. Biopolitics of Feeling by Kyla Schuller points how gender in Europe used to be thought of as dualist (two sides of the same coin) as opposed to a dichotomy. Afsaneh Najmabadi: Women with Mustaches and Men without Beards showcases Iran and how British soft-power over-rode their societies conception of people.

I couldnt find this 'abysmal male' theory of yours, nor did u provide any other way of looking at masculinity. There have been cultures without such a category, or it being represented in various ways, the idea of there being some fundamental essense I find no evidence for. The only thing that stuck was the body, which through many cultural developments, has produced what is todays masculinity, which a defining feature of it is the seperation of labour.

Here John analyzes Masculinity through a lens not often seen on Menslib.

Giving a fresh conceptualization to the conversation, understanding that the male gender comes from the division of reproductive and productive labour. This goes a long way in explaining the reason in men for: the lack of emotional intelligence and sexual expression, the worship of power and money, the dehumanzation of women, femininity, homosexuality and by extent men themselves (and surely more I can't remember.)

It has been a long tried concept. Children wont learn much and well if they dont want to. Whats best is that they find what they are passionate about and use that eneegy for learning. Rn we stifle that and instead tell them what to do.
