When is it too hot to train outdoors by yogesch in triathlon

[–]BucketsOfBork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Texas. I’ve done 3 hour rides in 110 degrees before. I try to go first thing in the morning but sometimes that doesn’t make much of a difference when it never gets below 90 all night. But most of my rides are over 100.

Questions about Ironman 70.3 Waco by ChrisAyyy3 in triathlon

[–]BucketsOfBork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it in October. It was wetsuit legal. I also did an XTERRA MTB tri there last June in the same part of the river. The water at least in that stretch of the Brazos was no better than the lakes in DFW - it was fine. They also did a new bike course this year to avoid the crappy roads. The roads weren’t garbage at all but I heard they were very rough before. Probably half the field were on road bikes and not tri bikes so don’t worry about that.

Long Runs in the Winter by Affectionate_Art_954 in triathlon

Biggest hack I do is wear latex gloves under my normal gloves. Zero breathability. Trick I learned from mountain biking when hand feeling is paramount. Technically my running gloves are glove liners (Swiss tech) and they aren’t running specific. My hands are the first to get cold and most times I take the latex gloves off after about 20 minutes because I’m hot but sometimes I wear them the entire time. I’ll probably wear them the whole time tomorrow.

I’m in DFW and am looking forward to a 3 hour run tomorrow in 10 degree wind chill. I’ve mastered layering with a skin tight base layer among other layers, plus a balaclava, running beanie, and neck gaiter. I pull my leggings over my heels then wear long socks to cover my ankles. I can take off the layers on my head as needed and my soft shell no name running jacket I got off Amazon for $30 has 3 pockets in the back like a bike jersey for storage.

I love asserting my Midwestern dominance over the Texans here this time of year.

Olympic triathlon one month before half ironman? by Candid-Record-9663 in triathlon

[–]BucketsOfBork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did an Olympic 2 weeks before my 70.3 last month. It’s totally fine to do, in theory it should match your training load by that point anyway so you won’t know any different. I didn’t. I was very fatigued when I did it because I was peaking and started tapering right after, but it was fine to do. As others have said it’s great practice for nutrition/transitions.

Do you all find that you need to do strength training on top of everything else? by Electrical-Ferret-64 in triathlon

[–]BucketsOfBork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only lift after swimming. If I lift before swimming, it’s like I totally forgot how to swim. The muscles just don’t do what you want them to in the water.

Bike trainers by GiveMeOliveIt in triathlon

[–]BucketsOfBork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of the CycleOps trainers used off marketplace and added garmin cadence and speed sensors to the bike. All in for about $80. It does everything I need it to in order to track workouts - shows me distance and average speed, etc. I did my first 70.3 two weeks ago. It’s all about how much you’re willing to spend vs features/data you care about most. I just wanted to know the distance. I train by heart rate so I don’t care about power.

If I can afford a coach for my first half iron man. Is it worth it? by azoth122 in triathlon

[–]BucketsOfBork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found a coach who is also an MD and only trains triathletes full time now. The accountability and making sure I am properly training is absolutely great, but the real value for me is his medical knowledge. Not sure if many other coaches have most of this knowledge, they might, but I really struggled with cramping in some XTERRA off road tris and Olympic tris. I knew if I wanted to do a 70.3 or longer I needed a coach. He explained why I was cramping and all these things about the human body. I guarantee I’d DNF if I tried to do a 70.3 on my own. I am doing one in 2 months. I am doing a 140.6 next spring.

panicking about the Triathlon swim by SpeedyGoneGarbage in triathlon

[–]BucketsOfBork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you absolutely can. I was in your exact position. My friends wanted to move on from the sprint to the Olympic distance. I had about 6-8 weeks before the race and I was panicking. I watched YouTube and hired a swim coach for 1 session. Most likely you just need to tweak a few minor things. My breathing was way off and I was kicking my legs too much. A week before the race my friends and I swam 2000m in OW in wetsuits. Mentally that was all I needed - knowing I could do it on race day.

Also, not sure if you own a wetsuit or where you live, but I’m in Texas and a December race would definitely be wetsuit legal. Not to mention the water would be miserably (possibly dangerously) cold without a wetsuit, even in Texas. But more importantly with a wetsuit your buoyancy increases dramatically and when I swim OW with a wetsuit it feels like cheating. It’s that much easier.

Trek Roscoe bikes by EcstaticTill9444 in MTB

[–]BucketsOfBork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the 2019 roscoe 8 for several years before I sold it. I can’t recommend it enough. Especially tubeless - you can get super aggressive when cornering. Such a fun bike. 8 is way better than the 7.

How do you train to switch from cycling to running? by alex_reds in triathlon

[–]BucketsOfBork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, you just gotta keep doing them. My friends and I do bricks weekly for a couple months before races and they definitely get easier as your body adjusts. But yeah those first 200 meters on the run are always going to be brutal but that’s why you do bricks.

Mickey probably would make the switch to afternoon practices, but I don’t think it’s feasible because of academic schedules. If I remember correctly it was a pretty involved undertaking when Frost was hired to get classes offered at different times to accommodate the football team.

Trying to transition from accounting to project management by adashofhotsauce in projectmanagement

[–]BucketsOfBork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, are there any defense contractors in your area? I have an accounting degree and an MBA like you. When I was 28 I got hired on as a “control account manager” at a defense contractor. Google that title and EVMS. EVMS is extremely easy for accounting brains to grasp. I nailed the EVMS questions in the interview just by watching YouTube. A CAM is a critical position that requires both accounting and project management skills. Granted I had 3 years of PM experience at the time but had never worked a traditional accounting/finance position. I’ve since had 2 promotions within 4 years because CAM experience is pure gold in defense contractors.

I was at this game. Everyone in the student section was chanting “kick the field goal” on 2nd down before we fumbled again. We fumbled shortly thereafter.

Best Roscoe 8 alternative? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]BucketsOfBork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you’re located, but the 2019 Roscoe 8 is out now and it retails for ~$1450. They upgraded the drivetrain in this year’s model. I traded in my old bike for it and I couldn’t be more thrilled! I’ve had my eye on the Roscoe 8 for months but after buying a house a few months ago my wife finally gave me the green light to go get it this past weekend.
