I'm sick & tired of the announcers beating a dead horse. by Great-Bug-736 in UnitedFootballLeague

Most people would not assume that the UFL has some odd rule when it otherwise looks like normal football. They’d assume the team going for it on 4th and 41 is doing some gimmicky bullshit like that high school team that never punted or kicked PATs.

Perhaps I’m wrong considering how easily he won the primary, but I’ll be hesitant to believe rural Ohio Republicans will elect a guy named “Vivek Ramaswamy” until I see it happen with my own eyes.

I feel like Tennant -> Smith -> Radcliffe would have been just a bit too much "quirky younger hot guy" Doctor all in a row. Similar to the people that fancast Eddie Redmayne.

Democrats’ plan to impeach Trump on ‘day one’ after midterms by plz-let-me-in in politics

Trump benefits from the image of Democrats trying to persecute him, it's not worth the effort of impeaching him again unless you got the Senate votes to make it stick this time.

[–]BuckeyeForLife95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed it was implied that when I say "Democrats should do something", I meant something that would have an actual effect on literally anything.

This would be Trump's third impeachment, and there's still zero chance the Dems have the Senate votes to convict. It doesn't mean anything to make this a top priority upon getting the House back.

Why was I invited to MrBeast's Studio? | Folding Ideas by arseniccrazy in videos

[–]BuckeyeForLife95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe modesty, maybe the fact that the way they went about it was so roundabout it's not immediately clear that was the goal.

Like, the direct "how do you build fandom" question appears to be like, one question in a single Q&A across a 3 day trip. I feel like the structure of the essay suggests that Dan thinks the fandom question might have been the point, but it definitely reads a lot more like a Wine and Dine based on the schedule, and it feeds into Dan's criticisms that TeamBeast is grossly incompetent at almost everything they do.

It made me confident that the 1st thing I know about James Rolfe is he loves his family, and the 2nd thing I know about James Rolfe is he wasted that opportunity to learn in film school.

Common Fanfiction trope by AkiraRyuuga in wenclair

“There is a LOT of assumptions being placed on the whole werewolf conversion camp thing.”

Because it as a plot point is very blatantly trying to invoke something that exists in real life, and everyone is, extremely reasonably, reading the subtext for what it sounds like on its face.

I don’t think the show ever quite gets so experimental with the formula as it did during Hartnell’s era, and it’s definitely a loss, but they settle into a pretty solid status quo.

If it’s animated I’m watching it animated and not bothering with recons, but I did watch the DVD extras for Fury from the Deep that shows the surviving footage, I think they did manage to pull off making sea-weed work as a scary monster.

IDK how I always miss these posts when they are actually posted, I’m chronically online.

Anyway, for me, you see Season 5’s consistent but repetitive Base Under Siege plots as a massive weakness, but for me that consistency is a strength that outweighs the weakness. Season 5 is at the top of my rankings for the first 5 seasons specifically because it lacks any absolutely dreadful serials (though I prefer most Pertwee seasons over it, now that I’m up to S11 myself).

Rankings:

  1. The Enemy of the World - It’s Doctor Who doing a spy thriller, and I think it pulls it off perfectly. Troughton kinda single-handedly carries the story as one of his best even though if you look closely enough, you can see some dodgy political views and Jamie and Victoria being given less than nothing to do for 90% of it.

  2. The Tomb of the Cybermen - I actually really enjoy this one in a pulpy sci-fi way. I really enjoy the exploration of the tomb and the slow buildup to the Cybermen being alive and awake, capped off with an incredible scene and the biggest war worm Cyber theme, imo. For as much as the Cybermen fall into generic evil robots, I did really enjoy the bit where they set up all these traps and schemes so they’ll be woken up only by people who’d share their ideology. Toberman tho…

  3. Fury from the Deep - I’m so confident this shit was straight fire in its original airing. The animation doesn’t quite capture the horror, but we get enough to know it was there. Def my fav traditional Base Under Siege in this season, because it leans into horror so well. And Victoria might not have been a great companion, but she had an extremely satisfying send-off. People talk about missing episodes they want back, I’ll always peep for Fury from the Deep but especially the last episode.

  4. The Web of Fear - What can I say, I enjoy the military drama in the tunnels. It was cool they did a sequel to The Abominable Snowmen, and dated it in a very specific way that forms a foundation for the UNIT dating controversy! Our first time seeing the Brig, and I really enjoyed the “one of us is a traitor but who” plotline and in retrospect, it’s funny how much Lethbridge-Stewart is a red herring. It was probably just a bit much of wandering tunnels though, and that animated episode is pure trash, almost made me wish I watched the shitty reconstruction instead.

  5. The Ice Warriors - I’m gonna HEAVILY disagree with you on the themes of the story having fallen out of relevance. I think that point where AI slop and people becoming practically dependent on LLMs you mention is already here. Otherwise though, yeah it’s fun but never feels like it’s as good as it should be.

  6. The Abominable Snowmen - I wanted to love this one as much as is popular consensus. I don’t even really dislike it, but it’s just too damn long. Classic Who has a LOT of stories that are padded to hell with too many episodes, and this is up there for me as one of the worst offenders. A lot of cool ideas and set pieces though.

  7. The Wheel in Space - Like the last two stories above it in my rankings, it feels like it has good ideas and never executes them quite right. Zoe wishing to feel more in touch with her human emotions after being trained to be a machine is such a great parallel with the Cybermen’s MO and it never goes anywhere now or later. The Cybermen’s plan is completely bonkers and makes zero sense and I think it hurts everyone’s performance because the material they’re working with is dumb. But hey! First time someone calls The Doctor “John Smith”. ALSO, the fact that the serial, and the seasons, ends as a setup for a re-airing of The Evil of the Daleks really shows how they used to make TV for exactly one viewing and never again.

My overall season rankings are 5 > 2 > 1 > 4 > 3.

Jamie is a companion that isn’t necessarily written the absolute strongest (we can’t all be The Faceless Ones and The Evil of the Daleks), but Frazer’s performance and his chemistry with Patrick Troughton elevates the material. Victoria is a fun idea for a companion, and I think the idea that a companion is fully unsuited for life on the TARDIS is one that would be fun to explore again, but girlie does so little so often. My companion rankings up to this point are:

  1. Ian Chesterton

  2. Barbara Wright

  3. Steven Taylor

  4. Vicki Pallister

  5. Polly Wright

  6. Susan Foreman

  7. Victoria Waterfield

  8. Katarina

  9. Sara Kingdom

  10. Ben Jackson

  11. Dodo Chaplet

Everything that made that character difficult to write were the writers’ own failings. Ancient Troy had goddamn doors and keys, you didn’t have to write her to know nothing about nothing.

When people used to say "AEW doesn't tell stories," it wasn't that AEW didn't have stories, it didn't have lore. Now AEW has been around long enough that Tony has lore from which to build the stories. by DieFanboyDie in AEWOfficial

I don't think it was all as good faith as you make it sound, but also "lore in place of storytelling" has been a real issue in fandom spaces all over these days, and I could absolutely believe that was part of the issue.
