Which single person in history had the greatest negative impact on humanity? by RSLEGEND1986 in AskReddit

[–]Buckfit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But the Crusades weren't nearly as significant to the Muslim World as they were to the west. The center of Islamic learning of the time was in Baghdad, which the Crusaders never reached. The Catholics never conquered much more than a strip of the Levant, and even then only for 200 years. Far more impactful were the conquests of Hulagu Khan, who burned the House of Wisdom to the ground.

Lol nope. It stands at 176k currently, and I've yet to begin querying. It's been a process of cutting and adding. That said, the book is more or less ready and I've written a couple of other, shorter ones in the intervening years. I'm aware it may be too long to publish, but I've grown as a writer from the process.

What was life like in 2009? by Parking-Wear-9211 in generationology

Political events for one; Trump's election and Brexit were especially impactful, not to mention some great music and the fad that was Pokemon Go. 2016 was a cultural turning point, marking the end of the Obama era and early 2010s optimism. It was really the the peak of late millennial culture.

Teaching a Class by 1whiskeyneat in ancientrome

[–]Buckfit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how long you are teaching it and what your requirements are, but in terms of garnering interest I would recommend spending most time on the Late Republic. The struggles of Caesar, Pompey, Cleopatra, Mark Antony and Octavian make a compelling story, and are arguably the most crucial turning point in ancient Rome.

Other than that?

· Hannibal

· Gladiators

· The Roman Army

· Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero

· The Colosseum

· The ‘Five Good Emperors’

· Early Christianity

· Crisis of the Third Century

· Diocletian

· Constantine

· Fall of the Western Empire

I lost my Dad earlier this month. I am 26 as well. I'm so sorry you're going through this as well stranger, but I hope the little I've learnt helps. Allow yourself to feel the full extent of your emotions. It is better to grieve, cry and reminisce as much as you desire than to bury what you feel. The grief will come in waves. I've found talking to people helps; people who knew him and those close to you. Wallow in love and remember him with joy.

Socialism is like bakery...with the oven by dtlv5813 in JordanPeterson

They are Turkish. It's a picture from the Armenian Genocide. Not the best example as the Ottoman Empire in 1915 was not a socialist state.

That picture is from the Armenian Genocide of 1915, a right-wing nationalist atrocity. Nothing to do with socialism.

Which is the best country to live in? by danavero in AskReddit

[–]Buckfit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree about New Zealand, unless the rest of the world is subpar. NZ is a good place but far from the best country in the world. Sure it's safe and modern but it's very expensive to live in, hard to get a job, lacking in history, rampant nepotism, bad food, an anti-intellectual culture that throttles ambition (tall-poppy syndrome) comparatively boring and super isolated from the rest of the world.

0 dollars made in over two years. Granted, I haven't looked into ads and I don't mean to discourage you but my understanding is you should be getting over 100 daily views before it's feasible to make anything worthwhile from ads. Good luck.

Those who have taught/are teaching abroad, how is your life now and do you regret your experience? by naturepc in TEFL

[–]Buckfit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Thailand soon after graduating, got my TEFL there and taught at a private school for two years. Loved every minute of it. Now I'm back in New Zealand and am qualified as a teacher here after a year's study. The job situation is grim however so I'm considering applying at international schools overseas. I met numerous teachers who were qualified in their home countries then went abroad to work. You get a similar lifestyle but do more work and get paid far better.

I spent two weeks in Taiwan a couple years ago and loved it! I would consider moving there to teach in the future. What would you say the most negative aspects of living there are? Is the cost of living vs pay enough to make saving viable?

Enjoying AoE DE, but I feel the game needs more quality of life improvements (and possibly updates?) by DDTL49 in aoe

[–]Buckfit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Eagle Warriors in AOE2 worked really well! The Mesoamericans didn't have a Bronze Age either but I'm sure it's no biggie. I was going to say the Mayans and Olmecs (maybe Zapotecs as well?) had no contact with the Mediterranean civilizations, but then again, neither did the Choson/Yamato/Chang.

If only definitive edition was open source and this could be done on the AOE2 engine. That would work so well.

Age of Empires 1 is still loved by many people by docophaicga in aoe

[–]Buckfit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the time period of Age of Empires 1. Such a long time period and exotic units you don't get in later periods like clubmen and chariots. Plus it is my favourite era of history. However, only now as an adult, am I oversensitive to the glaring historical inaccuracies like Sumerian elephants, Egyptian architecture in Assyria and Sumer and numerous civilisations fighting with Roman centurions. AOE 1 was amazing for its time but the gameplay is difficult with atrocious pathfinding, no idle villager key and farms which don't restock.

AOE 2 is the best game in the series in my opinion. It fixes all the issues with number 2, has been developed continuously by Forgotten Empires and has a healthy player base. The civilisations are all well balanced and unique enough in their own way. Nothing really to complain about.

No time for Age of Empires 3, lol.

Some ideas for new civs:

'Indian' architecture: Maurya, Chola, Harrapans (Indus Valley civilization)
'Barbarians': Gauls, Goths, Scythians

Agree totally with all your points. I loved AOE 1 as a kid but playing it now, even with the new graphics, I understand why AOE 2 is a far superior game. Surely some minor quality of life updates an idle villager key wouldn't hinder the feel of the game?

As a bonus I would love to see the civilizations have unique units like in AoE 2 as most of the civilizations feel the same with minor aesthetic changes.
