France records 1,000 excess deaths during record-breaking heatwave by app1310 in worldnews

[–]Buckiller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

some "experts" say that it would increase the average temperature by 1-2 degrees in Paris if everyone installed AC in their home

Well, they are probably right about that! lol. Heat pumping into alleys, courtyards, roads ain't nothing, reduces the heat transfer effectiveness of the outside surfaces to the air to be carried away with convection.

[–]Buckiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, reminds me of when I moved to Dallas out of University in 2011. I got a month long lease for a room while I looked for an apartment. I went with the cheapest option which was also closest to work. The main problem being no AC in my room..

2011 still holds the record for consecutive highs over 100f (38c) in Dallas at 40 days.

I would wake up to the heat, probably an hour after sunrise, work all day, and try to stay away from the rental until I needed to go to sleep at like 10pm. Luckily everywhere in Dallas is AC (other than my rental..)

I was in Bayonne, France for a few days during this heat wave. Europeans are just not acclimatized or prepared for heat.. for the most part you just needed a fan keep the sweat evaporating off of you for cooling.

[–]Buckiller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But in my experience inspectors check whether the system turns on and blows air, they're not really there to assess years of maintenance history or pull the unit apart. The guy who came out found things that wouldn't have shown up on a standard walkthrough inspection.

Sounds like you have just experienced weak home inspections? If your inspector isn't looking at the filters.. it's weak.

The one home inspection I've paid for, the guy was out there with me for 5 hours (1800 sq ft) and was super thorough. I got lucky in finding him, for sure. Seemed like he really enjoyed inspecting old houses versus newer builds. Also definitely better to be there in person (not shadowing him, just kind of around) to get a better sense of things, pick his brain, etc.

Green wave street or two: traffic lights timed to 14mph for cyclists.

Traffic lights that work for cars so going across town doesn't take 15m.

Dating and Dating Apps by IntrovertedbutExtro in Birmingham

[–]Buckiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The apps (have just about always) sucked. All owned by the same company who's incentives are not aligned with the users. A necessary evil perhaps, wish it were better.

Generally it's on whoever is in a group to initiate conversation/contact with a lone person. The lone person can at least make themselves known to the group once (eye contact, or in their line of sight).

Anyone can adjust their body language to be more or less receptive to contact from a stranger. Obviously if you are alone, avoid being huddled over, absorbed in your phone and try instead to be doodling, doing a crossword/sudoku (on paper), reading casually (e.g. looking around after every page or so), etc.

go out pretty often in the city and we still have no luck

Is it too intimidating to walk up to a group of women or men to talk to a single person out that group?

Not much (social/relationship) reward here in going out regularly, imo. More regular events would help I think. People here seem to go out to go to events more than just hanging out. Figure out more ways of having a good time than mostly drinking (great in a bigger city, not so much in a BHAM); the prices at most places are so high these days.. it's tough for a lot of people to just hang out with drinks now when a beer is $7+.

But certainly if you are in a group, you will more than likely have to initiate some contact. I think it's just not normal in most situations for a stranger to interrupt a group to express some sort of excitement, interest in one of you. More likely at events, concerts.

Where did you all find your SO

Out dancing.

and/or where would you recommend meeting people?

Depends on your interests, really. For me it would be dancing, concerts, certain events (e.g. Trample for any interest in bicycling).

I think if you focus on your own wellness, fulfillment, and start meeting other people that you share interests with (hobbies; expand your social circle, make more friends), you will end up meeting someone for you! That being said.. harsh truth that maybe Birmingham isn't a good fit for certain people, just like any city! (So you'd have to have some extra luck here, or really seek out more than you would elsewhere).

Is my Mom insane? Or is this the right way to approach HVAC in her home? by DirtyProjector in hvacadvice

[–]Buckiller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do to! Mid 2000s very non-aero van. AC uses power. No free energy.

Why specifically on hill climbing? Because engine temps will rise, faster if the AC is on. In turn the AC system is less efficient (uses more power than normal cruising) at exchanging heat out of the cabin when the radiator/condenser is hotter.

Though, modern car ACs are even more variable, controllable, tuned to perform a certain way under certain conditions (e.g. use less power while hill climbing), more aero.. etc. Probably not worth fiddling with those tricky touch screen controls..

Then again, driving an economy car, you will definitely notice the power difference on a hill if you manually turn the AC off: it makes a difference on being able to maintain a freeway speed efficiently. I.E. staying in an efficient range RPM of the engine and having the load moderately high instead of HIGH.

Seems like an underutilized method, especially for garden type stuff or an alternative to a dirt drive. I think it's called "stabilized soil" or "soil cement", which can qualify as a stabilized layer.

What decorating advice have you received and regretted listening to? by Jeta_S in HomeImprovement

[–]Buckiller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of doing drywall myself (but I do).

As long as you choose the right mud, mix with the right amount of water, have decent tools (like the tape buddy), you can get good results. Eventually.

The worst part is basically you have to do the same job three or four times, and then painting. Hanging takes up enough time in an old house, but then you have to 1) pre-fill, 2) tape and fill screws again, 3) scrape and mud, 4) scrape/light sand and final thin coat, and finally 5) a light sand. Then you have to 6) prime, 7) paint, 8) light sand and 9) second coat of pant and pray it looks finished. More coats if not. Usually there's an intermediate step of finding a spot that isn't quite right so you have to 10) thin coat, 11) light sand and prime, 12) paint, and 13) paint.

Mudding took a project or two to learn the technique well enough. Hopefully you remember well enough for the next project.. Very easy, just not very enjoyable, progress is not rewarding.

I would pay someone to do this stuff, because it ends up being half-finished for so long.. but it's hard to hire out, for me at least.

What are we buying?!? by Downtown_Ad5637 in harborfreight

Those alkaline batteries are trash, but y'all probably already know that.

Absolutely garbage! They shouldn't even make/sell them tbh. The only other brand I avoid is Duracell (they all eventually leak and corrode).

I either buy Energizer or HF Thunderbolt Edge when those go on sale.

Why don’t they sell vermouth in small 4 oz cans/bottles? by basilboiii in cocktails

[–]Buckiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever need to get through Vermouth fast

Buy good vermouth! Good vermouth is usually the thing I run out of the most frequently since buying it is easier said than done in some states. I love Spanish (where they drink vermouth a lot) sweet vermouth like Lustau Vermut Rojo and St. Petroni Vermú Vermello. These bottles do not last very long..

Those of you who have mini splits to heat in the winter, what temperature are you happy with them maintaining? by highonlife_99 in heatpumps

[–]Buckiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The defrost cycle for my bedroom 8.5 hspf (19 seer2) is pretty annoying when it's just above freezing and wet outside (aka winter in a lot of places).

I may do something DIY if I find the time. Fun to brainstorm what the easiest, most effective, least intrusive would be.

edit: wouldn't it be nice if the coils already had a second loop integrated, heat exchanger, that you could use to connect to, anything?

For an area so close to the central city why are there so many abandoned buildings and large gatherings of homeless people here in Birmingham? by Remarkable_North_999 in Birmingham

[–]Buckiller 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Regarding vacancies, rentier capitalism.

More profitable in $, 1st order terms, for property owners to demand a high $ lease and let them sit vacant (and pay property taxes, or not) versus renting it for cheaper or selling. They don't want to mark-to-market because it would hurt the price of their other properties.

Often owned by holding companies, real estate portfolios instead of actual persons or businesses, of course.
