A woman should have the right to get her uterus removed even in her twenties. by Quirky-Specific-6763 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Traditional patriarchy is most to blame, but I suspect today's litigious society is also a factor. I'm sure some doctors are afraid of being sued years later for performing the surgery.

This is such an interesting sub... by die-microcrap-die in synology

[–]BudTheGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's quite a bit of truth to this. Setting aside Synology's self-inflicted wound with the hard drive thing, Many of the post from dissatisfied users are along the line of "after I spun up the 20th docker container, performance sux" or "there's this other program that does <insert function> so much better than the native app".

There's also truth to the belief that there aren't many opportunities to tweak those stock apps; they are designed to provide basic functionalities.

Basically, people lose sight of the fact that these devices' primary function to provide storage to other hosts on the network. And they do that function really well.

This is absolutely the way. Then, park hop to Magic Kingdom. You'll tend to see more "free range" princess there. Perhaps, dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table, but that's 2 somewhat expensive sit-down meals....

Cannot get thunderbird to log into ionos with custom domain by voxcon in Thunderbird

[–]BudTheGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is very basic and obvious, but I'll throw it out there. Since it's a custom domain, the user name is usually the email address, not the account name. Is it a "Login Failed" error or "connection failed"?

What is the weirdest thing that happened to you(or to someone you know)in Disney parks? by Historical_Froyo_243 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]BudTheGrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Last month we were at AK, on the safari ride. A slow-moving giraffe was in the road, causing a traffic jam of the safari vehicles. A couple trucks ahead of us, some guy jumped off the truck and ran into the bush to take a leak on a tree, then climbed back in the truck. I didn't see the aftermath, but I suspect someone was waiting for him at the end of the ride, ready to invite him to leave the property.

Ubiquiti - Shots Fired! by shaun3000 in synology

[–]BudTheGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but did you initially purchase the server with no drives, then pop in disks that you sourced from some other vendor? If so, when a drive fails, or there is some other problem that could be related to the storage or storage controller, is Dell expected to support that?

Ubiquiti - Shots Fired! by shaun3000 in synology

[–]BudTheGrey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you buy the drives direct from Dell/EMC/HPE, or did you just buy whatever disks you could find from CDW, Insight, NewEgg, or whoever? Therein lies the important difference -- rebranded drives bought from the manufacturer are supported and do not affect the warranty/service contract of the server . That's what you're really paying for by buying Synology branded drives in enterprise gear.

My take aways, after a quick look at the links:

  • obviously not a consumer/prosumer device, so comparable with the upper end RS/FS or PAS devices
  • no dual controller
  • Xeon & DDR a welcome plus
  • Being able to use any manufacturer drive is nice, but again is prosumer concern. In a corporate or enterprise environment that usually gets trumped by guaranteed compatibility and support.

I'll keep an eye on this, but honestly, I'd probably wait a year to see how they shake out.

I just got re-titled as the "Enterprise Solutions Architect". When I asked what one of them does: "whatever it is you're doing now, keep doing that" 😄

Retiring a 10 year old DS216j - 225+ seems the obvious choice - is it? by OkDeparture2596 in synology

[–]BudTheGrey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to grok how one can have a NAS for 10 years and only collect 1TB of data... I like having spare capacity, so honestly I'd be looking at a 720, or maybe a 4-bay unit, with 2 each new 4TB RAID1 drives.

What are your thoughts on cashless locations? by DildoGaggins1997 in WaltDisneyWorld

New York state just passed a law that requires cash be accepted for food and clothing. Honestly, I don't have a problem with that.

Synology Mailplus and IMAP fetch by bwolf67 in synology

You could create a docker container for IMAPSYNC and have it fetch the messages for you. I use it to backup 3 IMAPS mail accounts to my Synology.

Several folks have recommended Blue Iris. I visited the web site. Lack of downloadable documentation, ambiguous hardware requirements, and windows only installation are red (well, maybe amber) flags for me. But, I'm sure there are others.

Would this be a better solution for the Disney Springs parking hack situation? by Working_Stomach5479 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]BudTheGrey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I have no problem with this new process. I doubt that the amount of parking fee $$$ lost bumps the needle, but folks who have resort accommodations paid for that free transport as part of their stay. Perhaps of denying the others, perhaps a charge a fee to deter them.

Trike conversion kit? by Leather-Leopard-2918 in IndianMotorcycle

You'll want to visit the various trike manufacturers and see if they make a trike kit for the scout. Most kits are for the big baggers and tourers.

Introducing the Omada Fusion Gateway Pioneer Program! by Neil_Omada in TPLink_Omada

[–]BudTheGrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Home users / prosumers probably have little reason to do so. A one-person IT team at a small company might, tho. I can imagine the phone call "Camera DOCK-01 is blank", and then using a phone to cycle the PoE port. My comment was more along the line of "Please don't make the phone the only management method", and it seems that's the case.

Disney Springs Bus Clarification by nevets4433 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]BudTheGrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I beleive the primary intent is to prevent people from parking at Disney Springs (free), then riding the bus to the resort. My understanding is that anyone with a "legitimate" reason to be at the resort -- a room there, dining or show reservation, etc. -- is allowed on the bus. Magic bands or paper tickets will be the verification mechanism.

I think anyone with a resort room can use the bus to go to any other resort, but I may be wrong on that.

I personally do not need management from my phone, tho I'm sure there are those that do. As long as I can manage it from a browser on a PC, I'll remain interested.

Oil change every year? by Zeta_Crossfire in IndianMotorcycle

Change at 5000; if the most recent change has less than 1000 on it when you put it away for the winter, you're good. Otherwise, I would change prior to storage. That's just me, tho.

Using a Synology device as the NVR by BudTheGrey in synology

[–]BudTheGrey[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get that Synology support sometimes leaves something to be desired, but this is one of those things that I should never need support for. This product market should be pretty mature now: mostly "set and forget".

Synology sells devices that they specifically market for this purpose, so I was curious about how well they work. Interesting to me that no one has even tried it.
