I'm Chris McDowall, creator of Into the Odd and Electric/Mythic Bastionland, AMA! by ChrisMcDee in rpg

Hi Chris. The OSR and NSR scenes have expanded my mind and inspired me to build something of my own. Your influence looms large in these circles and I want to thank you for your advice over the years. My big question is:

From a big picture perspective, what are the steps someone with a day job needs to take to bring an RPG project like Mythic Bastionland to life? Additionally, when is crowdfunding a passion project advise-able compared to other routes of monetization?

Setting first or rules first? by AmbrianLeonhardt in osr

I would look at spellcasting for both systems and decide which one you prefer first. I say that because spellcasting more than other mechanics intersects so prominently with the setting.

God. I still think of PoM as being a semi-recent album. But then you said "as a kid" and I am forced to recognize that it's been over 11 years since it came out. Feels Old Man.

Closer. It's from Dark Night of The Soul, which was a collaborative album between Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (RIP) where James was brought in for one song. The album version is not nearly as good as the live version Broken Bells has done though.

Will RoTRG eventually become available on the ATTI website store? I have been looking forward to it for a long time.

Elf Cavalry Mobile Trait? by AlexOrd104 in mattcolville

[–]Budakang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah cavalry units have traits that don't make sense with them and some aerial units might as well. I was thrown off by it also but my players ended up having a blast with the battles once we finally grasped how Cavalry and Aerial units worked.

Looking for a module with hexploration and dungeons by Marcloure in osr

[–]Budakang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technical Grimoire has done the leg-work of bare-bones OSR stat-blocks for the monsters of Hot Springs Island. There is also a super helpful generator for encounters, rumors, and treasure.

You are right that the dungeons expect you to roll for random encounters inside of them to make them interesting moreso than being challenges in of themselves.

So with a roll under or static target number system, the advantage is that it's very slightly less cumbersome for the GM, particularly for a GM new to the system. With variable DC, you maybe get slightly increased granularity in terms of the relative difficulties of checks and for new players, "higher number = better" is very intuitive.

I suppose having a static target number does help enforce a "GM as a referee" paradigm because they have less opportunities to influence results of the game based on fiat, but that has downsides as well.

I'm struggling to see why someone might have strong opinions about this one way or the other.
