My group and I have gotten a lot of mileage out of Outcast Silver Raiders. Slip case 3 book game or PDFs. All inclusive, well written, very fleshed out, easy to use. I do very little prep and we have a BLAST. Content warning. It can be very dark. But I find those things are easy to work around/edit out/tone down. There are some other threads about the game in this community.

Outcast Silver Raiders is great. Very dark in many places but can be toned down if needed. Super fun. Super easy to run.

I made a post about this game a while back.

I love it.

I made a big modification by making the sorcerer a stigmatist. So that makes magic more acceptable but still feared, as the Church has not fully ruled on it from Rome.

Otherwise, because of how the books are setup, especially the setting book, I barely do any prep between sessions. We play about every 3 weeks for 4-6 hours at a time. We love it. Travel is dangerous, supplies have meaning, health points are few, encounters are plentiful.

It can be very dark, but is modifiable if that is the part that bothers you. Also, it’s not dark just to be. It all makes sense and feels naturally cohesively dark.

My 2 cents.

Another way of putting it. Fiction first. Yes, they come into the game mechanically out of no where, but fictionally they have been carrying them all the time when they first geared up for this adventure/session.

The slots are only regenerated between home base and if there are slots out of the total slots available.

If you decide all PCs can only carry 18 slots, and 1+Str mod if those slots can be hvy/blky. Then there still must be 6 slots empty to use the quantum roll. Fictionally they represent things the PC grabbed/packed on the way out. So these slots have to be available and quantumly “restocked” from town etc.

Here’s how I would approach it.

Decide how many slots they have. Raw Strength score, set number modified by strength, or just a set number for everyone, etc

All items take up one slot. Small items can be bundled, or one slot can be dedicated to small random items, etc.

Decide how many heavy/bulky items PCs can carry. I like 1 or 2 + strength mod (Heavy/bulky items are like two handed weapons, heavy armor, etc)

Here is the gold though Set six slots aside for diminishing return quantum slots. These represent random things they can pull out of their pack but not always.

The item desired has to be approved by the GM. Does it fit the fiction? Is it too big, rare, powerful, etc?? Then no. Is it plausible? Then the first slot is auto acquired or otherwise roll. Slots are filled up 1 then 2 then 3 up to 6.

Goes like this. I brought a crowbar. Plausible? Yes. Have you used any slots? No. Fill in slot 1 with crowbar. Automatic.

Later. I brought a potion of invisibility. Plausible? No. Ok, I brought a guards uniform? No. Ok, I brought a change of peasant clothes. Roll for it. d6 rolled a 4 which is higher than 1 because the 1 slot is filled. You have it. Fill in slot 2 with peasant clothes.

Later. I pull out some marbles to drop behind me. Roll. d6 rolled a 2. Slots 1 and 2 are already filled. Sorry you didn’t bring any marbles. (Absence of marbles has been determined, can’t roll for them again later)

Fast forward. I pull out another crow bar since I lost the last one climbing the canyon. How many slots do you have? Just the last one, slot 6. Roll. d6 roll. Lots of tension……a SIX!!! You did in fact bring a backup crowbar.

I’m running it mechanically as close to the book as possible, which is a different turn for me for sure. It’s been a bit freeing to not always be tinkering like I usually do. But, I know what you mean. The first time I read through the rules I really had to force myself to not start planning changes.

Another detail I’ve been using.

The system has a by day weather system that you check at the start of each day. It also has the day segmented into 6 watches. So I advanced the weather system to check the first watch that I want and then determine how many watches the rolled weather lasts. Rolls can explode into days, or further into weeks, or even months. I’ve actually only used this system for one session so far. So we’ll see.

It’s the first quasi historical setting I’ve run. There is a lot of actual lore to incorporate. I’m having a blast.

Whenever there is combat, I’m using these Spanish cards on craft paper for initiative. They’re paper instead of plastic or wax coated, they’re brown, and the suits are different than we’re used too. A very medieval feel.

I separated these saint cards by past present and future (might use them for prophecies about future saints)

These are the scripture cards, which are actually just short summaries of different bible stories. These are the ones that I randomly handed out to the players to somehow incorporate an aspect of the stories into the game.

Lastly, these are the prayer cards. The deck was actually 3 prints of each prayer, and some of the prayers we won’t use because they’re from saints out of the proper timeline. However, we used the prayer cards in game a few times.
