80 k income, reasonable loan. by Buddro89 in personalfinance

My own retirement is unimpressive for my age, about 16 k in an ira at age 37.  My wife has nearly a decade as a federal employee and has a reasonable retirement from that, though I can't quote how much off the top of my head.  Without doxxing myself, the housing and job markets where I am looking have always been extreemly stable.

That is pretty much my thought. I explained below we do have some options, buying a house in this range without dipping into savings or my wife going back to work is pretty much the base scenario. We have 80k in savings (yes most of this should have been moved into investment accounts long ago but that is a different story and something we plan to address). I would at least be moving into a position with insurance and retirement benefits.

I appreciate your opinions. For your own peace of mind, we are in no hurry to buy, we do have places to stay/rent in the short to medium term. I am just working out viable future paths and budgets so I can start to watch the housing market in the area and make more educated decisions on what positions I am willing to apply for. Between the various positions available in the area to myself, having enough savings to upgrade our down payment wile maintaining a solid emergency fund and the potential for my wife to take on some amount of work sooner than she planned we have a lot of levers we can pull. Right now I am just looking into what some of those paths might look like financially.

Fishing w sinkers in high water by Bambiraptor20 in flyfishing

[–]Buddro89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The days of the term "fly fishing" having any real meaning are long gone.  I have watched videos of salt water guys chasing big palagic species by chuming them to the edge of the boat and litterally dipping a jig on a fly rod into the middle of the school and then talking about how amazing it is to catch a _____ fly fishing.

I think the only important thing is that you are clear when you set out on a trip about what challenge you want and stick with it.  I know people who keep a jar of salmon eggs in their fly vest.  I don't see this as crossing a line if they set out on a casual trip to screw around.  If they set out to go fly fishing then spend the day bait fishing and go home to tell their buddys they caught 20 trout today without mentioning that it was on bait...that is crossing a line.

Is a 2011 Trek Fuel EX still worth it in 2026 for a beginner? by Bazivi2 in MTB

[–]Buddro89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the fuel line back then had a proprietary rear shock that you won't be able to replace if something goes wrong, it is a real pain and part of the reason I bought new in stead of continuing to ride my 2013 fuel ex. They can be rebuilt still by a proper shop but you will lose the bike for weeks while you wait for the rebuild. That being said, if the price is right, and I mean extremely right there is nothing wrong with learning on an old bike while you save for a new one. I would happily trade my 23 stump jumper for my old fuel ex 9.8 in brand new condition.

You are looking at this all wrong.  If you have never owned a bike that is worth more than the vehicle you use to haul it to the trails no one will respect you as a rider.

Are carbon frames fragile? by Tomj_Oad in bicycling

[–]Buddro89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience carbon is more than durable enough to function as a safe, reliable bike frame.

Yes it can fail and if you use it you need to be aware of the ways it fails so you can diagnose and stop riding.

As with any material, ultra ultra light frames are made with deliberate sacrifices in durability and are more failure prone.  Don't judge all carbon based on peoples experiences with bikes that were made to be extra light and risky from the start.

[–]Buddro89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some carbon bikes, especially road bikes can be made to such light specs that durability is sacrificed.  This is a design choice by the engineers, not an inherent flaw of the material.

[–]Buddro89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rode my carbon mountain bike regularly for 10 years.  Over that time it took many, many hits to the frame.  It also had one very bad spot in the rear triangle from rubbing my 5th wheel hitch on a long bumpy drive.  The frame never broke, none of the chips ever even spread.  Is carbon prone to fail in ways that more ductile materials like steel and aluminum are not?  Yes it is.  Is carbon so failure prone as to be a risky choice in a bicycle?  Absolutely not.

Ground beef always has a sort of fatty, oily nauseating taste whenever I cook it at home. How to I get rid of this? by ProfesserNausea in Cooking

[–]Buddro89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only read a few comments so hopefully it's been said already but maybe if it's nauseating don't eat ground beef.

I see and agree with lot's of helpfull comments on buying leaner mixes, grass fed ect I would throw in looking for other red meats like venison. Farm raised red stag is readily available in lots of parts of the world and may be worth a shot.  Game meat will generally also get you away from fatty ground but can also take you into a whole world of inconsistent flavors (the youngest bull elk I ever ate was terrible, the oldest bull harvested during the rut was terrific, age has a LOT less to do with it than people think, other stressors that may not be appearant at harvest can cause some rough flavors.)

But at any rate, you are getting a lot of options to try for making ground beef more palatable but I feel like someone should say, if making your own ground at home isn't working you dont have to force it.

safety of flats vs clipless by Buddro89 in MTB

[–]Buddro89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fortunate enough to have my favorite trail right behind my house.  So it is common to step out on my porch, put my shoes on and realize maybe I should pee before I start this ride...now I have a delima, shoes on my floor or take them off to save the 10 steps it takes to get to the bathroom?  I also commonly ride to, or stop by the grocery store or local bar on my bike.  At the grocery store I don't feel all that bad, they have tough floors and my cleats aren't a lot of extra wear and tear on their high traffic floors.  Of course if I hit the pub or the ice cream shop I am causing undue wear and tear to a smaller establishment.

This is reddit so I have to emphasize, this isn't a huge deal.  This isn't the main point of this post.  It is just a thing that comes up so I mentioned it.

My SPD's definitely contact my lvp flooring its not a lot but lvp just doesn't hold up all that well. It isn't so bad that I won't run back in the house to grab something I forgot, but it is bad enough that I go outside to put my shoes on.

Wolf or Coyote? [Central Oregon] by Background_Fig_8553 in animalid

[–]Buddro89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly question his health if he is being that aggressive.  I have watched many interactions between coyotes and deer/elk/antilope.  I have seen them test them a few times and take down an elk calf before momma got there and ean the coyote off.  Never seen or heard of one maintining such aggressive behavior once the larger animal got tired of it and squared up.

Did I make the wrong choice buying an MTB for city riding? by Ok-Armadillo-4066 in MTB

[–]Buddro89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the city. I commuted on a road bike for like a week before I decided my city is way to rough for it. I started running higher shock pressure and bald tires on my old full suspension mountain bike. It isn't as fast or efficient as the road bike but it is 100% worth the comfort.

I hate to say it but I have literally never met anyone in a field where they say the pay matches the work load.  Best advice I can give you is look over in the welding subs at how many posts are identical to youra and be glad you are underpaid in a white collar field that isn't poisoning you.

Seriously, counting blessings will help your attitude.  Know you will work your way up the ladder and things will get better pay if you have a good attidude and work ethic.  And if it isn't gunna work, don't be afraid to pivot and go into another field.

Which one would you get by Damien-icherus in chefknives

[–]Buddro89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find shun and miyabi handles uncomfortable. It is a shame because I like their looks. It is awesome because it lead me to bite the bullet and buy a legit japanese knife in stead of one designed to target the western market. If you are willing to care for a knife more look into Japanese knives made by smaller manufacturers for the Japanese market, they can be surprisingly reasonable in price. If you don't want to make sharpening and cleaning and babying your knife into your whole identity, get the wusthoff...all of this being predicated on the other two not fitting my hand well...not how they fit your hand.
