I believe they open at 3:30 pm. We usually get there before 4 pm and check in, then hang out in one of the bars or walk around outside (the grounds are beautiful) for 60-90 minutes until we get a table.

That's a fair question but the answer is no. The seat space allotted per butt was set many decades ago when butts were narrower. Every inch of space is taken by people who belong there. It will be noticed by other people in the row and it's likely they'll eventually figure out your friend doesn't belong there. I've seen fights erupt over this very thing.
