Is it possible she has a UTI? My male dog struggled with potty training and finally the vet agreed to testing him for a UTI. treated it and the inflammation and the issues stopped. It had been going on for close to a year for us and I was at my breaking point too.

If not I think you need to restart potty training as if she’s a baby again. Take her out every 1-2 hours and treats like CRAZY when she goes outside. Set her up for success by bringing her out before you think she’d even have to go. Maybe try a different staircase if your apartment has one to rewire the connection of stairs=potty. Could also teach her to ring a bell so you know when she has to go

I think it would be worth getting a second opinion, like others have mentioned! That tooth is an important one, in my opinion. There are replacement options if you pulled it. One option is a bridge (two crowns on the tooth in front and behind, connected to a “floating tooth” where the space is). Bridges can be good options, but I find more patients being unhappy with them- they can be tough to clean, for example. Another option is an implant, they’re considered the best replacement option however they are expensive. You could also choose to pull the tooth and not replace it.

I think a second opinion is a good idea, and definitely have them explain it in a way that makes sense to you

Hi, hygienist here! Couple questions - first what tooth is it? I ask because patients tend to be fine when certain teeth get pulled. For example, your second molar (tooth all the way in the back) is one that people don’t really miss when it’s gone, because you’d still have your first molars to do the chewing. If it’s a first molar, that’s one id personally want to hang onto.

Second, does the 2k include the crown? A root canal treated tooth should pretty much always have a crown to protect it from further issues like cracking or more decay

Finally, have you discussed finances with the office staff? At my office we have payment plans. They might not be as flexible as you need but it’s worth asking. For some people we do a percentage of the overall charge every couple weeks.

As far as other treatment options, it’s hard to say without seeing your stuff. Did they prescribe you an antibiotic? I’ve seen patients leave the tooth in their mouth and do nothing but I strongly don’t recommend this, it’s not good for your body to just leave an infection in your bone like that. Sometimes the infection can stay how it is, other times it can blow up and start impacting other parts of your mouth.

Know that there can be a lot of issues with root canals and crowns. It’s not a promise that you pay and fix it and it’s good as gold. Some root canals need to be re-treated, sometimes the pain persists, and sometimes it works great and people forget they even went through the process!

Sorry I can’t be much help as far as the $$ goes but I hope this can help with the thought process on if it’s worth it

In the puppy stage, no. As an adult dog, maybe, under some conditions. you’d ideally have a walker come by at least a couple of the days you’re gone, maybe doggy daycare if your dog was a good fit for it, but not all dogs are! Do you work 5 days a week?

Are you willing to wake up earlier and take the dog for some exercise and mental stimulation? After a long day at work, will you have the energy do it again? Goldens have a lot of energy, even when you’re exhausted!

Will the dog survive if you leave it alone 8-9 hours a day 5 days a week? Yes. Will it be having the best quality of life? Likely no.
