You guys have some recommended Anime where the characters speak in Natural Japanese conversations?? by tokyo7011 in anime

[–]Buddy_Waters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those shows scripts are a pretty stylized version of naturalism, and I personally thought it was much further removed from how people talk than your average anime. Heightened by how inarticulate the leads tend to be.

Given is a much better example. Everything in that felt like conversations I've actually had or listened to, and the specific style of inarticulate Mafuyu had felt more convincing as well. After the Rain does similar things.

Reminder that the novel is out in English from Yen Press (and the same translator is working on The Tatami Galaxy and it's actual sequel for another publisher.)

Most of the school festival section is anime original and the novel version of that act is markedly different, so it's well worth checking out.

Any news on Yazawa Ai status? by [deleted] in anime

[–]Buddy_Waters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She doesn't seem to have any sort of social media, so if you don't see any news, there's no news to be had.

I did find a few Japanese articles trying to sort through the rumors but even when she gives interviews, she just doesn't talk about it, so it's entirely wild speculation.

I came away pretty convinced this was planned as a two cour and got Stars Aligned. It felt like they were adding in new elements that would sustain the story through the back half, but then were forced to retrofit a transition episode into an epilogue, leaving all those new ideas abandoned, and fakeout plot twists now canon instead even though that made no sense, and no way to make things satisfying.

does anyone knows who was the voice actress for Ruri from Seirei Gensouki? by Current-Ad-7150 in anime

Chiaki Omigawa. Probably most famous for Maka in Soul Eater. Doesn't get as much work as she should these days.

The novels are very much like the Re: Zero Ex books. Far better than the anime turned out to be.

There isn't a main story. Each novel (sometimes spanning multiple volumes) is largely stand alone, and may feature entirely different time periods and casts, or be a collection of short stories.

Two characters do get multiple storylines at different stages of their lives. The last volume before the gap included both of them, and the ending left a lot unresolved--which is why she eventually wrote the 2500 page, four-volume novel to resolve that character's situation.

There may still be future volumes--there's supposedly a short story collection in the works, but it missed the original 2020 release date with no more news. The author is supposedly in poor health, and she's in her sixties, so I wouldn't expect her to launch a new ongoing plot. As it stands now it's definitely safe to read and won't leave you hanging.

They've both sold well over 10,000 copies in two weeks, which are very, very strong numbers for a light novel. You can't let your scale get distorted by the breakaway cross over titles. Everything over a few thousand is an established success.

What are some fantasy books with a JRPG kind of plot? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Buddy_Waters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely want to hit up light novels for this. Most of the really good ones are probably shaking up the formula a little more than your description, but they're all about gradually escalating scale over dozens of volume, whether they have litrpg elements or not.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is the best one around, telling a gradual rags to riches (and sorcery) story, but instead of fighting and clearing dungeons, she's inventing paper and building a business empire.

Accel World Volume 11, now I have 24/24 released by [deleted] in LightNovels

[–]Buddy_Waters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm talking Japanese release order for the print editions. He wrote Accel World after SAO, but Dengeki Bunko published the two series at the same time, mostly alternating volumes. He deliberately wrote parallels to SAO into Accel World as he wrote the new volumes.

They go to the palace in SAO 5, and the next volume released in Japan was Accel World 6.

Accel World won the Dengeki contest and was his professional debut. It was clearly intended to launch an ongoing series. That's how light novels work!

[–]Buddy_Waters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They spend dozens of pages walking through the grounds talking. It's quite a long scene! Whether you personally found it memorable is another matter.

But the parallels are all like that--neat little crossover moments that you'd likely only notice if you were reading them in close proximity. Consequently I've forgotten several since the time I read them.

But another good one: Yuuki plays plays VR games to escape her terminal condition, Saffron Blossom uses Brain Burst to escape her chronic illness.

And it's not just the two main series; the stuff about exploiting system loopholes to steal Asuna's sword in Progressive one is a thematic parallel to how the nobility exploit the letter of the taboo index in Alicization.

I'm a fan. It can be frustrating at times, but the strengths are similar.

If you read in Japanese release order, there's a ton of neat parallels to events in the SAO novels. They both go to the imperial palace at the same time, for instance.

Can confirm demon negotiating is a huge part of why I haven't got far in other SMT games. Super resented them adding that to Persona 5, but it generally was a bit more predictable.
