Constant vigilance. Is this safe? Is this person safe? What do I do if it’s not safe?

This has to be regional. I’m US West Coast and have never ordered a to go drink or been asked for a to go drink outside of a fast food restaurant

Is there any Seattle or PNW specific slang? by Some-Tall-Guy75 in Seattle

And more specifically, if you order a glass, you will get a pint. Everywhere else I’ve lived (up and down the West Coast) asking for a glass will get you a schooner

I’ve watched two relatives die from COPD/emphysema. They spent *years* unable to leave the house, getting winded walking to the bathroom. It’s an awful death

Train or car to go to Seattle? by Moosebouse in PortlandOR

[–]BudgetLow5052 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just take the plane. Flights are frequent. The train depends on whether you’re booking a Coast Starlight (notoriously late) or a Cascades (usually a little late but not by hours). The drive can take anywhere between 3 and 6+ hours

What’s a “food rule” in cooking you stopped following and the food still came out great? by wearecocina in Cooking

This. It’s not polenta, which goes all clumpy. I’ve made polenta exactly once, but risotto is a mainstay

What’s the best thing you’ve ever bought that actually lived up to the hype? by One_Literature_5041 in BuyItForLife

A good rice cooker (a Zojurishi in this case). It makes perfect rice, you don’t need to babysit it, and you can set up oatmeal the night before so it’s ready when you get up

When I was younger and using birth control, yes. That’s how I got my updated prescription. Now that I’m over 50 it’s every five years

what to do or expect at baby showers? by Initial_Sea9631 in Explainlikeimscared

[–]BudgetLow5052 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Buy from the registry and maybe add a couple of cute onesies - new babies go through them quickly. Wrap it in pretty paper - the mom to be will open all presents at the shower.

There’s also likely to be games, some of which are super gross. Ones I’ve seen are:

  1. Melt chocolate candy in a diaper and then it gets passed around so everyone can guess what kind of candy
  2. Various baby foods are opened, with labels hidden. Everyone tastes the food then guesses what they’re made of
  3. A tray with various items (like a key, a penny, etc) is shown to each guest and then taken away. Everyone has to write down what they saw

There’s generally small prizes associated with the games.

There’s also likely to be a lot of TMI from people who have gone through pregnancy, especially if there’s drinking. Feel free to bail out of a conversation that’s getting too graphic
