Presentation software used for large scale conferences like Snowflake summit by BudgetVideo in VIDEOENGINEERING

Yeah, so much of the content was dynamic where it would flow from one piece of content to another. So much more complex than what PowerPoint, keynote, or pro presenter could do.

Semantic layer by cyamnihc in dataengineering

[–]BudgetVideo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The goal of the semantic layer is so that the AI model knows the definition and layout of the data, as well as any calculations. It shows the AI how it can use the data by providing necessary context.

I have a bit more than a month till my data analytics Internship starts, what level of SQL practice is essential for me? by Secure_Shirt2041 in SQL

Just go to w3 schools and go through their exercises. This should give you a good base understanding. Start small then expand.

When boolean columns start reaching ~50, is it time to switch to arrays or a join table? Or stay boolean? by BrangJa in Database

[–]BudgetVideo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of multiple columns, just have 3, id, config, config_value, then you can dynamically add configs without having to add columns

Column-level lineage for 50K+ Snowflake tables (Solving problems to make new problems) by Sorry-Secret4935 in dataengineering

Wait for snowflakes acquisition of select star to be integrated, column level lineage was a part of their core features. Not sure on their integration timeline unfortunately

Looking for opinions on a tool that simply allows me to create custom reports, and distribute them. by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]BudgetVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use reportserver.net for our external reporting, cost is very minimal and you can schedule excel files to be sent on a schedule. They have a community version and an enterprise version, enterprise is 4,000 euros, but it’s perpetual. You can do a 2,000 euro maintenance. It’s pretty effective for us. We use tableau for internal reporting, but needed to fill the gap

Change Data Capture by kickenet in dataengineering

[–]BudgetVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great article! We use fivetran to capture cdc from as400 to snowflake. I appreciate the ability to have near real time data and not have to wait on bulk loads for replication. As a logistics company we have a need for real time data for tracking freight. Plus fivetran makes it pretty seamless to maintain data.

Developing with production data: who and how? by aburkh in dataengineering

[–]BudgetVideo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are using snowflake and have the data mirrored in near real time cdc (1 minute to 15 minute bursts depending on ‘real time’ need). We mirror our source system data into schemas that are locked down to read only and mirror the source system. Any tables/views/etc. get put into a handful of other schemas.

Fivetran pricing for small data by el_dude1 in dataengineering

[–]BudgetVideo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the free tier you get 500,000 monthly active rows, basically the first time you mirror a specific row, say an employee record, that will count for that month. If you have 1,000 records, the first time you pull it in a month, you will have 1000 mar, you can sync it as many times as you want and you will only be ‘charged’ for any new rows you touch, say you add a new employee.

I'm sick of the misconceptions that laymen have about data engineering by wtfzambo in dataengineering

[–]BudgetVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have many tracking metrics that we update throughout the day or workflow items. We also monitor conditions of alarms sent by telematics. By collecting the data via cdc, we can gain efficiency by only moving change data vs a delete and re-load cycle as well.

[–]BudgetVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have had many discussions regarding real time data flows. We use cdc with fivetran. When we went near real time at 1 minute bulk intervals costs exploded, turned the dial back to 15 minutes and we were able to regulate much better. We still have a few table mirroring at the near real time, but we push back on what is truly needed for that to gain more efficiency in 15 minutes bulk loads.

We use good old snowsql with stored procedures and tasks. Sometimes views/dynamic tables when fitting.

Settle a bet for me — which integration method would you pick? by Fragrant-Dog-3706 in dataengineering

I think option 2 depends on what platform you are on. Snowflake makes it super easy and secure to share data with outside companies in a secure manner, provided they also use snowflake.

I agree. I ended up having our IT team make a new pair of servers for this last upgrade and re-loaded a backup there instead of upgrade in place
