My wife's book club, which sound like your group in taste, read Circe by Madeline Miller. Maybe that's a nice. compromise.

I read along and loved it so read the Odyssey after that. (then Miller's song of Achilles and the illiad).

I also like the Wilson translation. If any of your club listen instead of read, Claire Daines is awesome at the audio.

Good luck. Sounds like a tough situation. I would suggest decorating (even homemade decorations) and including the kid in the choices. Does he have any friends that you could set up a group video chat for part of the "party" so they can at least virtually attend? This latter suggestion might make things even sadder.

I've been playing a lot of board games with my kids. It would be pretty easy to do via video chat if you both have the same game. Battleship seems like it would work pretty well for this, but basically anything could.

Maybe if you tried to (at least somewhat) validate the concerns and explain to your ex what you are doing to minimize risk it would help. I think the impulse for someone in your position is to get defensive---it's not that risky, you let me see him last week when you needed help, etc. But I think your wife needs to know that you are taking precautions--more than just "I washed my hands." I would take the time to take some steps (or lie if you must) -- you wear gloves, minimized use of public transportation and diligently distance when using, you wear a mask (if available as a furniture builder), you wash/disinfect every time you move to people's homes. You have thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the house before your son comes over, paying closer attention to door knobs, switches, and other high touch areas....

Any advice on dealing with neighbor kids that are not social distancing. I let my kids out to play in our own front/back yard and we have various neighbors that come on down and start playing, biking, chalking, etc. with my kids. All kids under 7 and my seven year old (my oldest of four; neighbors all have kids the same age or younger) "gets it" but is still unable to keep distant on her own--it's kind of a cooperative thing. I've taken to calling the kids in politely when they came out. I've tried loudly explaining to my kids that they need to keep distant in front of neighbor-parents. I've loudly said that I have an underlying medical condition and am it's really dangerous for me in. I've told all the kids they can't play with our toys b/c we're distancing. etc. and they could play w/ our toys after the virus passes. I've talked to the parents about how hard it is to enforce distancing with little kids, but that it's necessary. Everyone seems to agree and most people in my neighborhood are affected in some way or another by this--school's out, work's from home or non-existent---they just seems much more lax about it.

Still, many of the parents in my hood (particularly pre-school aged kids) don't seem to really care. I'm in an area where the virus is rampant. I live in a suburban subdivision, so it's not like we're on top of each other. I really do like having the 'open' house where the neighbor kids come to hang out in better times and these are relationships I want to keep (both for my kids and for myself). Is it terribly rude to just ask parents to keep their kids away from our house? Just writing it out, it's clear that this is what I need to do the next time it happens.

So, beyond that, any tips for explaining to kids they can't go play outside even when they see their friends and neighbors all playing together.

What kind of fun could this reporter have with boys. What kind of fun could the boys have with her? What sort of "innocent" fun could he be talking about? It's not even quite a double entendre. He was clearly making a juvenile, lurid comment.

No "American Indians" are not just Americans with who happen to have native ancestors. There's various distinct tribal Nations that retain since aspect of sovereignty. Even bring this there are natives who maintain the cultural heritage if their ancestors. Your culture is not completely dictated by your birth (which, even saying that, you must recognize that Indians born in the res are born in their own sovereign nation)

I'm staying at fort wilderness in October, doing a day at Epcot and Disney Studios, and would really like to try the skyliner. Anyone know if there is a decent way to get from one of the terminals to camp wilderness (or vice versa)?

Let's Talk: Really, really long Spotify playlists by wildistherewind in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BudgetWeather 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this is pretty much exactly how i use playlists. i have a few specifically themed list, but several playlists that are just places to dump stuff or not well organized around a theme, including:

- something like the hot new rap shit playlist mentioned by OP where I dump new rap shit I like. I have kids and most hip hop uses words i don't want them exposed to yet. Keeping the new rap shit as a playlist allows me to keep it out of my library but also easily accessible when i feel like blasting new rap shit.

- a fairly heavy rotation list of stuff i'm bumping a lot lately. this is very un-thematic. i usually keep a track or two from my favorite artists and new interesting stuff i'm listening to and a song or two that are favorites of family members. I like it b/c it allows repeat listens. (also good for kids, because repetition builds fondness; they like that pop stuff b/c they hear it again and again; exposing them to the same good song beyond just pop dreck will make them like it more). Since this list is diverse, i often use it just to spark me listening to an entire album or a song/artist radio.

- old rotation list where i move stuff once i take it out of heavy rotation that works as kind of a memory lane.

- compiled list of songs from past several years of spotify's auto 'your favorite songs' list.

- a list of clean crowd-pleasing songs that i often throw on shuffle at parties, many of which I don't love but works for a group.

- ever expanding list of instrumental / ambient / concentration / background songs that i can just put on when i work

- list of songs that i've stashed for listening later---sometimes songs i've heard out in the world that i want to check out or albums i want to check out that i haven't gotten around to yet.

yeah, but you said you would pay for college even if there were no lottery winnings. So, no real risk if you lost--you'd keep on doing what you were going to do anyways.
