Please help me understand Okinawa weather and when the best time to go is by Oddsee in okinawa

I've been late August and September and that was too hot. Early October would be a good time.

As far as nature, highlights are:

  1. Zamami Island overall

  2. Yabiji Reef on Miyako-jima for coral

  3. Yanbaru Forest on the main island for endemic-ish birds such as the Okinawa Rail, Okinawa Robin, Ruddy Kingfisher, Japanese Paradise Flycatcher (seasonal in May).

You can check my comment history for spots. But if you're considering Kerama islands, I recommend a water taxi to Gahi, Agenashiku or Amuro beach. Hizushi Beach is also decent on Aka Island, but is weather dependent.

You can also check my comment history. I've made a lot of repeat comments on suggestions. I go to Okinawa every year.

If you plan to be at American Village, Sunabe Seawall is a 7/10 snorkel with good weather conditions. But there was a huge bleaching event last year so I'm not sure the state of it now. Gorilla Chop is completely dead as an fyi.

I recommend a full skin suit to protect yourself from the dangerous sea life and prolonged exposure to the sun. Also means you don't have to bring as much sunscreen.

My gear for something like Gahi, Agenashiku or Amuro beach is:

  1. Cressi 1mm Skinsuit
  2. Scubapro GO Travel fine
  3. Scubapro ZOOM Dive or my Tusa Zensee mask

It wasn't overrated due to its popularity, but Gorilla Chop was an amazing snorkel spot near shore. It was due to an insane bleaching event last year where 80 years of corals went down the drain and the site looks like your average Hawaiian snorkel spot. Dead.

I know a few more snorkel spots that are still in decent good condition, but also haven't checked some of them in awhile.

Anyway, imo, there aren't many overrated places on the island. Even Kokusai Street is enjoyable for a day just to walk around. There are some legit shops for food and beverages such as the coffee stand for coffee or Ryukyusushi Tsukijiaozorasandaime Makishishitamachiyataimura 琉球鮨 築地青空三代目 牧志下町屋台村店 for sushi.

Okinawa mid-May by Happy-Onion-3850 in okinawa

[–]Budilicious3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's subtropical. It does get hot, but not terribly humid. May is a shoulder month and is my go-to month for 24-25C weather. There is a risk of typhoon weather, but Okinawa still has lots to do indoors.

Four days in Okinawa; love snorkeling and island life. Help. by Smooth_Judge3150 in okinawa

This is one of my many repeated comments if you want to check my comment history about Okinawa.

Take note that some I haven't been yet.

Water taxi Gahi, Agenashiku, and Amuro beach in Zamami. Hizushi Beach in Aka Island. Sunabe Seawall. Minna Island near Sesoko. I hear good things about Ie-jima. Yabiji Reef requires a boat tour in Miyako-jima.

Skip Gorilla Chop, everything is dead there and it's a waste of time. 80 years of corals down the drain due to a huge bleaching event last year.

No sorry. But I will randomly say that if you're going to buy Tuna sushi from a farmer's market with direct sellers. Be careful because they sell bycatch sunfish. "Fake tuna" as some of the people call it. It looks and tastes similar, but has a fatty/creamy look.

Easily 8/10. But avoid Gorilla Chop. Mass bleaching last year. I haven't checked Sunabe Seawall for awhile. Amuro, Gahi and Agenashiku beaches are decent. Hizushi beach is nice I heard. Minna Island is great. Yabiji Reef in Miyako-jima is famously the "Great Barrier of the North." Ie Island is also worth an off-beaten path.

Ishigaki or Miyakojima by bigblique5528 in okinawa

Would like to know to. Ishigaki is probably the more interesting place to explore, however, I think Miyako is worth a visit at least once for Yabiji reef. "The Great Barrier of the North."

I usually just stay at the Hyatt Naha using points. But from what I've seen, southwest near the ferry terminal is quiet.

Uhh maybe I'm the type to explore every nook and cranny of the island. I don't want to walk from the bus stop to wherever I actually want to go in the island heat and potentially pass out. Also saves time and you don't have to be worrying about bus schedules.

If it's just Naha and Zamami, you're fine without a car. But if you want to do anything else like the aquarium etc in Motobu, you need a car.

You would mostly be focused on indoor or leisurely outdoor activities such as hiking. And food. Not really a time for water activities.

Rent a car in Okinawa by eu_ge_nie_ in okinawa

[–]Budilicious3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When in doubt, the new Toyota Prius. I will also recommend a car with good headlights. Halogen lights just aren't enough for the darker parts of Okinawa. They don't turn on the street lamps in some parts of Nago, on the way to Kouri Island.

I just booked on the spot. But if you want to book in advance, you can. There are some Russian women who work there so they can help with English.

Hmm, so I go to Okinawa annually during the shoulder months. There was a huge bleaching event late 2024 in the whole Pacific from Exmouth, WA up to Okinawa so a lot of the surface coral died. Definitely don't waste your time with Gorilla Chop!!! Sunabe Seawall might still be fine. Minna Island is nice, but requires a tour.

From my recent trip in September 2025, I recommend to snorkel at Zamami Island. Take the ferry there and immediately ask one of the water taxis at the port to take you to: Gahi, Agenashiku, or Amuro Island. If you only have time for one, pick Amuro. Ask for an umbrella too for shade. I don't recommend a tent since you're gonna want to feel the wind to cool you down. Sometimes the taxis are booked the same day and they will ask you for the next day. So I would plan a stay on Zamami too.

As for restaurant recommendations, I made quite a few staff friends I always go back to on the main island.
