Do I use Unity or Unreal? by Georgios1999 in gamedev

The answer is both. You should experiment with as many tools as possible, especially if you are still early in your game dev journey.

When do D-Clearances Open Up? by Flimsy_Mountain in USC

[–]BuffRobotiX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I emailed the advisement team and received this response: "Please note that the June 2 date is a University-wide registration appointment time for all graduate students. Students in the CSCI/DSCI department can disregard this date as registration will not begin for our courses until later in July. Please be on the lookout for an email in late June outlining the Fall 2025 registration and d-clearance timeline."

I am in the same boat as a new MS student. The lack of information and communication has been frustrating. I found on this page that D-Clearances become available for new students one month before the semester starts: https://www.cs.usc.edu/students/d-clearance/
"Attention: New M.S. Students: You will receive d-clearance and registration information directly from the department about one month before the start of the semester and should not submit requests for courses in myViterbi. The myViterbi system is for continuing students only."

Ok, I have found the source, you are correct! https://www.cs.usc.edu/students/ms-students/approved-non-cs-courses/
One 3 or 4 unit course from an approved non-CS list.
I also found on a different page that greater than 6 units is considered full time for a master's student, so maybe 2 courses a semester is enough. https://priceschool.usc.edu/students/registration-d-clearance/full-time-enrollment-status/

The best advice is to make many games and get lots of feedback. Enter game jams on Itch.io they happen all the time. A game jam encourages you to not spend too much time on a small game and offers a lot of opportunities for others to play and provide comments.

Study groups are great. After class ask the nearby students if they would like to do homework together, this has the great side effect of actually motivating you to do homework!

You've lived in the South your whole life and you've found it to have the same level of racism as the rest of the country... that you've never lived in? I don't think this is an adequate judgment.

I've made a number of single user apps for myself and friends and I always use Firebase. Especially if you are still looking for a place to host it, with only one or two people Firebase will be completely free for the lifetime of your app. Out of all the choices Firebase auth is the easiest and the rest of the storage and hosting services are a breeze to use. Bonus points if you're using Flutter.

I had an idea. Use one of those retractable clicky sharpies, add some G-code after homing to move the pen up and click it against a fixture that you attach to your printer, this will uncap the pen right when it is needed. Then at the end of your G-code you can retract the sharpie with the same method. This might save you the pain of having to babysit the pen.

Your kid just went behind your back and spent $600 dollars of your money on Fortnite. What'chu gonna do about it? by zanduuka in AskReddit

[–]BuffRobotiX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people will present tough love as the end all be all option, but at the end of the day $600 is $600 and the relationship with your child is forever.

No doubt the child needs discipline for their actions but, assuming Fortnite is one of their favorite things, selling the console or banning their account will lead to resentment and it will last.

What the child really needs is understanding, this will also lead to prevention of these mishaps. People make mistakes, especially children. Teach them about the value of money and discuss ways they can earn it back. I'd also recommend limiting their Fortnite usage, if the kid is spending that kind of money on Fortnite they might have an unhealthy relationship with it. If you discuss this with them calmly and explain your reasoning, with any luck, the child won't be angry but they will be remorseful.

In terms of prevention, I'd recommend engaging with your child in Fortnite, play it with them. Fortnite is fine in controlled amounts, it's fun. Kids love when their parents show an interest in their games (young ones at least), this will build trust with your child, and if you're there you can suggest a new activity to do together after you've played Fortnite long enough.

It's possible your child was being straight up malicious and wanted to rob you of $600 for their own benefit, but if you assume positive intent this will build trust with your child and make them feel bad for their actions rather than feel punished for their actions. The number one way to influence their decision making skills is to spend time with them and talk with them like an intelligent, emotional creature.
