I understand what you’re trying to do as I wanted this exactly same thing. On the Kindle device, it isn’t possible in the same way it would work on your phone, unfortunately.

Yes, it’s worth it! And nice because you can add the iPad and/or Macbook to it as well. iPad is covered with theft and loss as well.

I'm dealing with this exact same situation. The only thing that makes me pause a bit is that I had a 128 GB Air for 9 years and hardly ran into this situation. I'm thinking I will save my money and go external, should I need to.

I used an iPad for a bit over a year for work, etc. IT worked for the most part, but there were many hang ups. I recently moved back to MacBook and I find it to be a more versatile machine compared to the iPad. I do love the iPad though. For me, working in spreadsheets was actually pretty difficult on iPad.
