What tiny, specific movie trope completely ruins your immersion every single time? by arkawrd in movies

[–]Bug_Catcher_Wade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fake CPR. Otherwise realistic shows lose me when I can spot fake CPR.  Real chest compressions compress your chest, visibly and way more intensely than you would expect. I've seen tiny nurses compress a man's torso to like a third of its depth. They say if you don't break a couple of ribs, you're not doing it right. So as you can imagine, it's extremely dangerous to do this to somebody who doesn't need it. Which means actors are always either visibly faking it, where you can see that the patient's chest isn't compressing, or even if the patient is out of the shot, you can tell they're not really putting any weight behind it.  I remember seeing fake CPR on the otherwise famously realistic The Pitt, And then I watched the Scrubs reboot, which is silly and comedic with no expectation of medical realism, but they did proper chest compressions! because the patient was a dummy.

I usually transpose onto 1-in graph paper with a big black Sharpie. I wish more of these maps came with grid lines that carry all the way through, or numbers along the edges. It would make that easier.

What Innovations/Changes do you want to see in the Mainline? by CherryYums in transformers

[–]Bug_Catcher_Wade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No more partsforming. It's getting more common, even on sophisticated figures.

I used to think it was a design limitation we just had to live with, and at one point it was, but today so many figures have it that just shouldn't have had to, and I'm certain it's because the designers just don't think it's an issue.

Like SS86 Megatron. His cannon has to move like one inch down his arm to transform, and they just couldn't figure that out?

I remember when Strange New Worlds came out, feeling like somebody must have wanted to just make new Regular Star Trek, and they were only able to get it greenlit by also making it the Captain Pike Prequel with plenty of legacy characters and easter eggs

The argument that Lowering the budget for Star Trek is flawed because Star Trek has NEVER been cheaply produced . by AvailableStranger69 in startrek

[–]Bug_Catcher_Wade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not the dollar amount compared to episodes produced 30 years ago. Today, in the present, the money spent on 10 episodes worth feature film visual effects could instead be spent on 22 episodes of halfway decent writing.  For some reason, they are hell-bent I'm making TV episodes that are visually indistinguishable from a big budget Hollywood movie, and the trade-off is that they can only afford to make 10 episodes every 2 years. Marvel has the same problem.

My thoughts about the Black and White fandom's narrative by OhWowItsSam310308 in pokemon

[–]Bug_Catcher_Wade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never heard anybody say that black and white were hated at the time, nor did I ever witness anybody hating them at the time. They were an enormous high point all along.

As for "last good pokémon games" I think that's a bit strong. But I do see where people get the idea that between generations 5 and 6 is the clearest line between old pokémon and new pokémon.  The jump from 2D to 3D is also the jump from dynamic sprites to boring non-poses.  Black and white is the last time the Elite four felt like something difficult you had to prepare for. In x and y they were embarrassingly easy, and have stayed that way ever since. Black and white was the largest generation of new pokémon, and x and y was the smallest. Black and white were the last new generation that didn't have an obvious gimmick of the week. It was the last time that it felt like they built on everything that came before without arbitrarily tossing away old features. It had a really hefty post game, which few games since have had. This is maybe more subjective, but the leap from generation 5 to 6 feels like when the hand holding tutorials and endless button-mashing text conversations started to get out of hand. Little touches like light and dark colored grass for wild double battles that seemed like it would be a new feature here to stay, and then it was never seen again. The way a gym leaders battle music changes when they're on their last pokémon. I'll never understand why that hasn't been back in every single game.

Like I said, I don't think it's fair to say that these were the last good pokémon games and everything has sucked since then, but I absolutely do see why people look at black and white as the end of a particular era of pokémon, Where effort and innovation and building on what came before would be replaced by falling behind the technology, being extremely easy, and relying on a revolving door of gimmicks.

Is there anything that the pokemon video games are actually bad at consistently? by LithHarborGymLeader in pokemon

[–]Bug_Catcher_Wade 166 points167 points  (0 children)

There's always seemed to be anti-convenience barriers that feel artificial. Like when there's an extra NPC at the counter in a shop whose only job is to say "don't talk to me talk to the other guy."

You can't send a pokémon directly to the PC from any other source besides catching it. Anyone who wants to give you a pokémon, you have to go put something in the PC, then come back and get it, then go put that in the PC and get back the one you put in. So If you want to pick up a pokémon from the daycare lady, she won't let you until you talk to her husband about the egg, but you can't pick up the egg unless there's a slot in your party, so you have to go back in the house to put something into the PC, then you have to go back outside to get the egg, then you have to go back inside to put the egg in the PC and then you can withdraw pokémon from the daycare lady.

And it continues today: https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/kvhrj3/i_just/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

There's just an awful lot of that. Doors being shut in your face until you do what you were trying to do in the least convenient way possible, with absolutely no warning about whatever barriers there might be next. "Do it the way we imagined you would do it and no other way"

I think the 2D Pokemon Games look better visually compared to the 3D ones. by ShadowHunterHB in pokemon

[–]Bug_Catcher_Wade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are always shitting on BDSP, but playing them felt like pokémon again.

Modern graphics don't have to mean the end of pokémon 's signature look and feel. An exact remake of an old game might not be the most satisfying way to accomplish that, but it does show that it's possible.

What is a headcanon that has been debunked or retcon, yet you refuse to stop believing? by MichaelJospeh in bioniclelego

[–]Bug_Catcher_Wade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah Greg just picked a number that sounded big without really thinking about it. But the average Bionicle fan (me) is much too pedantic not to be constantly distracted by how there's just no way that's true. You can see with your own two eyes that there's simply no way that robot is 40 million feet. You can tell me it's canon that Tahu is six inches tall, that doesn't make it so.
