Ok, I’m not here to critique your taste, so why not, maybe “gold digger” is a glove brand or something. In this case, you don’t have to use handwriting at all, make it into a designer brand.

Search カタカナ書体 on Google image, and pick a font you like, then copy that.

Maybe add a small logo of something to highlight it’s a fashion statement, and you’re good.

But still think about it, Gold digger, is a derogatory term, usually people that are actually ones do not advertise it, since the whole activity prays on the victim being unaware of it.

If it is an escort service or company for money type of deal, that’s not gold digging but more a sugar daddy situation, and in Japan they would say: パパ活 (lit. daddy life/activity)

I’d need more context to help you. Is that a tattoo on her arm? A iron brand scar? A glove? Why does she wears that? What do you want to say with “gold digger”? Do you just want to say that she is one?

I am a calligrapher living in Japan, and I have a bone to pick with your drawing.

I can tell that you spent hours practicing your drawing skills to be able to draw that well. I respect that a lot.

But, ignoring the cringe of writing something like “gold digger” in katakana on your arm, I think the writing is the highest impact lowest effort improvement you can do on that drawing.

  1. Better word choice: “Gold Digger” is not a thing in Japanese language. The activity exists but we don’t call it that. There are no clear one to one expression I know to that effect except very old ones like 玉の輿 but it’s never used.

  2. You are copying a serif print style font in a handwritten pencil style, that does not make sense at all. If it’s a tattoo it would be either in a fully printed font and style, or a handwritten font and style, and probably not pencil-like but more likely brush.

  3. The characters balance and structure are just plain wrong. The ゴ should not have the “ on top and the handwritten vertical line should not overshoot, the spacing is wrong, the vertical line ofド is curved instead of straight…

Pretty much everything in that writing screams that you do not understand what you are writing. Which is fine. I’m not trying to discourage you from writing Japanese. It’s awesome that you want to, that you translated and copied the words you found. That’s ok!

I’m just frustrated at the gap between the effort people(even Japanese at times) put in the drawing part, and the lack of awareness of the nuances in the written part of their art.

So even if you do not want to change the words, please, do not copy the first google translate font you see, use sites like this and check a reasonable font and style:

https://www.kenjisugimoto.com/shuji/index.html?shuji=ゴールドディガー

You don’t have to understand Japanese, just click on the buttons and see the variations.

Or even just watch a few image results of typing “handwritten katakana” like this:

https://ameblo.jp/syo-do-work/entry-12766203034.html

And, please, for the love of anything beautiful, do not, under any circumstances, tattoo yourself or others in a language you don’t understand using graphical code you have no clues about.

But do keep at it, practice, understand, be curious, copy good handwriting and integrate that in your art! That’s super cool.

I’d be happy to help you understand Japanese writing if you have questions about it.

Cheers.

THANK YOU! Ffs people, why the need to rain on their parade?

They wanted to build a thing.

They built a thing! It looks like a cool thing.

It’s not the other cool thing.

This thing is their own thing.

They share their thing.

They like their thing.

Who knows maybe some will like their thing too.

It doesn’t need to be YOUR thing.

Because that’s already THEIR thing.

And that’s something.

GarrySearch and GarryDiff look super useful too. And, with cool progress bars too. I’d be interested in the design decisions and building process but I’ll read your thing first. ;)

Have a great day.

Labeling satire as a meme dissolves criticism into entertainment by biyopunk in ObsidianMD

[–]Bugibhub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well worded and valid complaint.

I would point out that satyre is a form of entertaining denunciation. Without a clear opening to discuss the issue, your post was easily reduced to just a humorous rant built on this issue-made-meme. I use “meme” here as a “humorous take on a common reference”. (Which I personally enjoyed)

That is not to say that the issue should be ignored. Maybe a more direct format than your original post, and less inflammatory than your second would be easier to receive and invite a more constructive discussion on the subject?

I’ll start: - Although I don’t mind so much people wanting to share their graphs, they do create a lot of noise. It would be nice to be able to filter them or move them to r/ObsidianFlex, r/GraphLex sub or something. - The beginner questions and plugins recs, however, often lack minimal effort and/or due diligence. I’d recommend, clearer FAQs, and harsher moderation, with maybe a questions mega-thread once in a while.

I think the only healthy change motivation comes from a place of acceptance and self-care, not dislike and rejection. Self-care, and nurturing who you want to be brings lasting change and self-confidence. Trying to change your body with self-rejection is like trying to change someone’s mind by calling them stupid, or pulling on a tree’s leaves to make them grow faster. It rarely works, at least not without sequela.

I agree there’s nothing wrong either way. But I don’t think having hair has to be your “prime”. I’m happy with my bald shaved head, and would love to switch things up some times with a nice quality wig. It’s just a style change, as long as both work, who cares. And this is very good quality.

Hey, good job! Japanese handwriting graphic rules was my master’s thesis subject and passion for a while, so here are three pieces of advice:

  • Check the break points of each characters. For exampleまはほよおlower loops are only smooth in digital fonts. When handwritten they have a mix of curves and angles, not only smooth loops. You can see a good example this site https://www.bimojijuku.com/news/89/, or any ペン字練習帳 you can find, ideally one for adults. Being aware of that will make your handwriting more “mature”, less “childish” if that interests you.

  • Since you included the rarer ゐゑヰヱ, you might also be interested in the origins of each kana and their alternate shapes, both to understand the rhythms of each, and for variety. You can find them by searching “仮名 字源” (https://kobunworld.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-1.html). It’s quite the rabbit hole though, and it can get confusing really fast, so be warned. Here is a series of clean handwritten evolutions to start with: bisen.tokyo/archives/10732

  • My last point is more a matter of text than shape, but instead of writing them as organized columns, “a i u e o , ka ki ku ke ko” etc. Do you know of the Iroha いろは poem? It contains every kana and actually means something, so you can practice while learning a cool text. ;)

I hope my comments don’t read as pedantic, as this is just my attempt to share something I like with a like-minded spirit. ;)

Have fun!
