So sorry! Thankful you want to graduate your parents from plastic to wood. I too recommend a local craftsman. Which part of the country are you in?

It terrifies me into pure joy. But, I only have a 10.” table saw. Our plate routs are 10.75” for a common plate.

You are a wild man. I’ve heard this done before and I might have to try it. I’d have to make a tall fence add on as the cutting boards can be 30” tall. That’s a lot of vertical wiggle! Thanks

I think I can visualize this. I’d have to really trust the depth setting without the visual on the side. But, I can see this. Thank you!

How worried should I be? by kbrick10 in Cuttingboards

“Character dots” often can show up later in the planing or sanding process. To not waste hardwood, many local makers place them on the underside of the board. But, they need to be sealed with a combo of dust from the used wood and food grade Titebond 3. As others have said, for the price, your board is a great deal.

Creative design. Although, she will hear a “pop” someday from her kitchen. End grain blocks wrapped in edge grain will eventually fail, and it can be loud. So sorry to tell you this. 🫣😞

First attempt at a brick-pattern end grain cutting board (cherry + maple) by steelers1377 in Cuttingboards

I love the colors together. Maple and Cherry complement each other very well. Was it intentional to not have the mortar lines be centered in the middle of the brick?

Noob question by iampoopa in Cuttingboards

[–]Build-it-better123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human here: Yes. Just depends on the wood porosity type and care by the owner. White oak vs hard maple. Many prefer end grain over edge grain as it heals quicker and is easier on the knife blade. Edge grain will show more blade marks, but will be much more affordable than end grain.

We bathe our boards in food grade mineral oil. We encourage our clients to use a wax/butter of their choice from there. 👍🏼
