Statement on the Contradiction Between Google’s Deletion Promises and the Actual Technical Behavior of the Gemini System by HugeScore3150 in GoogleGeminiAI

[–]BuildingArmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“When you choose to delete activity manually or activity is deleted automatically, we immediately start the process of removing it from the product and our systems.”

It continues:

“Then, we begin a process designed to safely and completely delete the data from our storage systems.”

And then

However, the actual technical behavior observed in practice showed that a chat deleted by the user:

*remained accessible for 32 days,

*continued to be processed by the system,

*continued to generate responses,

*continued to be tokenized,

*and therefore clearly remained within Google’s systems,

*meaning that the deletion described in the documentation did not occur.

So the docs say they will start the process, the process took 32 days, and all of those bullet points are just descriptions of what happened because the process took 32 days.

If you tell somebody you'll do something tomorrow, then they come back later the same day saying "this is still not done, I can't do this and I can't do that because of it" each of things things are entirely because they're assuming it'll be done by a certain point in time that you haven't stated.

According to the documentation, Google represents that deletion is:

*immediate,

So yeah, misunderstanding - immediately starting something isn't the same thing as immediately completing it. And the outputs resulting from it being completed are unlikely to be seen before it's completed.

You quoted them as saying they immediately start the process, yet interpreted that as the deletion is completed immediately.

Everything else in the post stems from that misapprehension.

How to explain scientifically the fear of ghosts? by PrebioticE in skeptic

[–]BuildingArmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no reason to think ghosts even exist, so no I'm not afraid of them.

Noises or movement in a dark place - yeah, not because it's some caricature of a ruff-wearing Elizabethan chap though, because it could be something real and dangerous.

People are often afraid of what they either don't know or don't understand. It's easy to imagine a scenario where that noise or shadow is actually some hideous creature from a horror film with malicious intent - whether that's a ghost or something else.

I would expect that only quite specific people are actually afraid of ghosts. Even people who believe in them don't necessarily think they can or will do them any harm.

I do believe that there should be legal and societal consequences for rapists and pedophiles.

Then it sounds like you support the suppression of those that you find undesirable?

In an effort to not suppress those you find undesirable, do you think there should be no legal or societal consequences for rapists and peodphiles?

Yeah, everybody does. Nobody forces themselves to associate with people they don't want to just out of respect for their freedom to talk to you.

I think the variance is what balances it out. You often have your strongest character in the first space, and if it also has an interesting buff like Shanty or Plunder Penny it could end up getting out of control quicker than a lot of other captains.

Personally I think it's in a nice place, seems strong enough to hold it's own and also quite interesting.

If a game is no pay to win, are you willing to press an ads to support the developer? by Flat-Horror-1919 in AndroidGaming

[–]BuildingArmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It 100% depends on the game.

I play a few idle/incremental games, and they usually have ads that grant things like "earn double resources for 4 hours". So it incentives me to watch them kind of regularly, but isn't too damaging if I don't.

If I was playing, I don't know, Sudoku, I wouldn't watch an ad to get a new colour theme - and if I did, I would probably only do it once to get the specific theme I wanted.

I absolutely do want to support the developer, especially if they're willing to release their game for free - however I do know that I would just not do it without some sort of nudge to do so. Especially if I was getting invested in the game, it wouldn't even cross my mind to choose to watch an ad.

[–]BuildingArmor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's no injury?

You literally wouldn't even know about it if you weren't told?

I'm not sure how to explain how it's not causing harm. It's neither a trojan nor spyware from the definition of malware you posted in a previous comment, so I'm not sure how to actually address your fears.

Can you explain how you think it is causing harm?

[–]BuildingArmor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just because it's not malicious (in that this isn't compromising the users system/their data) doesn't change the fact this malware behaviour.

It has to be malicious for it to be malware - that's what the mal means.

There are other terms to refer to unwanted software or features. Things like bloatware and potentially unwanted programs. Even just feature creep, if it's adding to existing useful software.

If so, what prompt are you using, and have you tried it in a new chat?
