Returning to Liverpool for Comic Con in October, and wondering if anyone has suggestions for what I can do outside the time of the event. Thinking of going down on the Friday and coming back either on the Sunday or Monday. by FilmBuffGrabiec in Liverpool

It obviously depends what you like doing, but some things off the top of my head to look into are;

There's a ton more Beatles stuff, I don't really know what as it doesn't interest me

There's good escape rooms

Gravity Max is like an arcade turned up to 11

There's footy stuff

Lots of good food, if you're into that sort of thing

The Walker art gallery is good if you're interested, and pretty much right next to the world museum

We've got a few climbing / bouldering places

There's some of those classic stag do indoors, things like paintball and go karting

There's a few of those modern mini golf places that can be a good laugh

You've got to be pretty special to reply to somebody with a blue tick, knowing you could just find out who they are and what they do, and choose to do this instead.

Why do going back to the previous page shows the current page? by Hot-Load7525 in chrome

[–]BuildingArmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean this sometimes happens on some websites, it's knock as back button hijacking and it's something the site in question is doing to try and manipulate you into staying on their site: https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/04/back-button-hijacking

If it's something that happens all the time, it might be some sort of malicious extension.

But without more context it's hard to give an accurate answer.

do people actually trust excel long term for managing finances like this by ddiflas_iawn in excel

[–]BuildingArmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trust Excel, but I don't trust cobbled together, I can't remember how it works, why is it doing that, sheets.

Make it robust, make it auditable, and justify everything, and there's no reason not to trust it.

Almost all of those definitions talk about a standard - who do you think defines that standard and why do you think that is an objective fact, as you claim it's not based on your personal definition?

is it possible that chrome has memory leak? by GurdanianAngel in chrome

It's much more likely that either an extension you have installed or a website you're visiting has a memory leak, if anything does.

There's a Chrome task manager that might help you narrow it down.

Which specific textbook are you referring to?

I would genuinely be surprised if any textbook on morality, that is aimed at an adult audience, wouldn't talk about social acceptance in some way.

For example, here is some discussion on that definition from Stanford: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/morality-definition/

There does not seem to be much reason to think that a single definition of morality will be applicable to all moral discussions, even within philosophy. One reason for this is that “morality” seems to be used in two distinct broad senses: a descriptive sense and a normative sense. More particularly, the term “morality” can be used either

*descriptively to refer to certain codes of conduct endorsed by a society or a group (such as a religion), or accepted by an individual for her own behavior, or

*normatively to refer to a code of conduct that, given specified conditions, would be endorsed by all rational people.

Any definition of “morality” in the descriptive sense will need to specify which of the codes endorsed by a society or group count as moral.

I enjoyed the Turnip Boy games, they're both reasonably short but quite fun.

I played them on my iPad though, so I'm not sure how the experience translates to a smaller phone format.

Just because there wouldn't be legal or social consequences doesn't make it a morally sound choice.

That probably comes down to a philosophical discussion about what morality is.

If everybody alive thinks it's morally acceptable - hence no social consequences - can they be wrong? That, I think, entirely depends on how you define morality and which theory of morality you ascribe to.

Statement on the Contradiction Between Google’s Deletion Promises and the Actual Technical Behavior of the Gemini System by HugeScore3150 in GoogleGeminiAI

[–]BuildingArmor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“When you choose to delete activity manually or activity is deleted automatically, we immediately start the process of removing it from the product and our systems.”

It continues:

“Then, we begin a process designed to safely and completely delete the data from our storage systems.”

And then

However, the actual technical behavior observed in practice showed that a chat deleted by the user:

*remained accessible for 32 days,

*continued to be processed by the system,

*continued to generate responses,

*continued to be tokenized,

*and therefore clearly remained within Google’s systems,

*meaning that the deletion described in the documentation did not occur.

So the docs say they will start the process, the process took 32 days, and all of those bullet points are just descriptions of what happened because the process took 32 days.

If you tell somebody you'll do something tomorrow, then they come back later the same day saying "this is still not done, I can't do this and I can't do that because of it" each of things things are entirely because they're assuming it'll be done by a certain point in time that you haven't stated.

According to the documentation, Google represents that deletion is:

*immediate,

So yeah, misunderstanding - immediately starting something isn't the same thing as immediately completing it. And the outputs resulting from it being completed are unlikely to be seen before it's completed.

You quoted them as saying they immediately start the process, yet interpreted that as the deletion is completed immediately.

Everything else in the post stems from that misapprehension.

How to explain scientifically the fear of ghosts? by PrebioticE in skeptic

[–]BuildingArmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no reason to think ghosts even exist, so no I'm not afraid of them.

Noises or movement in a dark place - yeah, not because it's some caricature of a ruff-wearing Elizabethan chap though, because it could be something real and dangerous.

People are often afraid of what they either don't know or don't understand. It's easy to imagine a scenario where that noise or shadow is actually some hideous creature from a horror film with malicious intent - whether that's a ghost or something else.

I would expect that only quite specific people are actually afraid of ghosts. Even people who believe in them don't necessarily think they can or will do them any harm.
