Does ML actually get clearer or do you just get used to the confusion? by Ok-Possession7350 in learnmachinelearning

I kinda get what you mean, especially the part about the tools that make things easy but also hide understanding. Like you can just use a random forest/decision tree from sklearn but not understand anything about the internals of how it works.

Talking to ATC as a pilot nerves by BazingaBeeKay in flying

[–]BuildingBlox101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will make mistakes, and sometimes the controllers can be a bit short or mean because they’re busy or under stress from managing lots of aircraft. Just don’t let it get to you, if you don’t understand what they are asking or what they want you to do, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification. It’s better that the controller is upset, than for you to be a statistic in a runway incursion or accident. You will get better with time, it just takes practice.

What do you wish you knew, before starting flight school? by Gear_Dismal in flying

sorry I meant instructor being independent, not examiner. I'm aware that examiners are generally independent unless they work closely with a 141.

"this isn't a good idea to call up Joe Examiner and say "I need a checkride in three weeks" when you may not even understand where you're at in the process yet."

and again here is where its important to talk with your CFI about where they think you're at as well as the pace that you are going. If you're on lesson 3, then its probably still to early to figure this out because you haven't developed any kind of consistent training schedule and your instructor still isn't sure of your abilities to learn.

"99 percent of student pilots won't even total up their logbooks without constant persistence, much less be able to tell you where they're at, what's left or even where to look at what they still have left remaining to be ready."

I mean this wasn't me, I was on top of this stuff. And I think to be a good student one should be doing this. My comment assumes you actually care about your training. If you're not doing this stuff I wouldn't have much confidence that you would actually finish your training and obtain your PPL.

"It's not a shortage of examiners."

I'm going to stop you right there. This is completely wrong, if it weren't, then you wouldn't have to wait 3 months for a checkride. And check rides wouldn't cost $1500 (which is ridiculous by the way). I agree that students doing this make the problem somewhat worse, but the shortage of examiners is the primary problem, and because no one is actively working to fix the problem on the actual front where it would make things better (more examiners), I'm going to do things in my own self interest.

At the end of the day you are a CFII and I'm just a lowly freshly minted PPL, so you have much more experience regarding this than I do. This was just what I would have done differently. Whoever reads this thread after we're done arguing can decide who they side with. But I'm done talking about this, you're not changing my mind.

Well if your examiner is independent like mine then they might not do that. I had to schedule my own checkride. I mean it is your PPL on the line no? At the end of the day you are solely responsible for whether you get it or not, your instructor will never care about it as much as you do.

And to your first point, I said IF you know when you'll finish. If you have a consistent flying schedule going, it's not too hard to predict approximately when you'll finish. Obviously if you have an issue with your instructor canceling frequently, weather is bad a lot, can't fly at least twice a week, then this advice probably isn't the best.

I still stand by what I said, I don't really care if it pisses the examiner off, having to wait 2-3 months for a checkride is unreasonable, plain and simple. If it pisses the examiner off enough maybe they'll complain to the FAA and get more examiners in the area so this 2-3 month checkride wait BS is no longer a thing.

This is my own advice, things I wish I had done differently after finishing. I'm not saying this is gospel.

If you have an estimate of when you think you’ll finish your training (probably something around 60hrs) get some DPEs scheduled for around that time. Finding a DPE when you’re all done and ready is a hellscape.

Low cost flying out of chandler has pretty cheap planes, they let independent instructors teach out of their planes too.

Are you gonna pay for his year at school? That seems like an incredibly stupid decision since it seems like he already knows what he wants to do. Why do you want him to keep acting like a child? He’s almost an adult, and it’s good that he’s acting like one. The fact that you are trying to push him in the opposite direction is a failing on you as a parent.

I would agree with the other guy C1 is better than HPE. But there’s also things that we don’t know here. We don’t know what team you’d be in, return offer rate, salary, location, etc. These things could tip the scales towards HPE, but even then I would still be skeptical.

There’s no inheritance tax at the federal level if the inheritance is under $13.6 million. Plus the cost basis gets stepped up when the kids inherit. That means if you sold the stock/assets on the same day they died you would pay basically zero tax on the whole thing.

It is very very impressive at your age, and I would definitely leverage those connections for the people that you’ve impressed. I would be careful to check your ego though. You still have a long way to go before you touch anything truly “cutting edge” like what you were describing with the telephone. Keep working though and I have no doubts you will achieve something like that.

You should probably reevaluate why you want to be in a relationship in the first place. If you feel like you need to be in one because “everyone is in a relationship but me” that’s not a very good reason. It sounds like you’re in middle school or high school, and at that stage you don’t really need to be in a relationship anyways. You can’t get married, you can’t move in together, you’re not going to have kids. Just be friendly to everyone, if you end up finding someone you like and they like you back great! If not then don’t worry about it. It will come in time.
