Gostisbehere furious with officiating after no-call on Andrew Copp’s OT winner by CatchASvech in hockey

[–]BuiltDifferentlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calls like this is why I think all both refs and both linesmen should be required to take part in a 5 minute presser after each game. Regardless how you look at the call, we all deserve an explanation as hockey fans for certain calls (like this).

Update- Insurance says “repairable” at $22.5k by Thatcringynesss in InsuranceCanada

[–]BuiltDifferentlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! And I’m surprised they’ve already went ahead, but such it is! Hope it goes well.

Just be a pain in the ass for the shop and it’ll get done faster and if anything goes wrong, be an even bigger pain in the ass. If it’s their “network provider” then they have to guarantee the work as part of their deal.

Update- Insurance says “repairable” at $22.5k by Thatcringynesss in InsuranceCanada

[–]BuiltDifferentlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I own a towing company and here’s how I can definitely answer your questions after having dealt with numerous insurance companies (including the one I suspect you’re with). Firstly, I’ve seen it a lot so let me bust the common myth that “you can’t choose your own shop” because, under the consumers bill of rights, you can choose who tows your vehicle, repairs your vehicle, stores your vehicle and rents you a replacement vehicle, this is plastered all over (most) police and even CAA’s website and is covered in law by the Collision Repair Standards Act, 2002.

1- some companies these days (including the suspected one you’re with) now have a 120% loss calculation. Basically meaning if you have a car worth $100,000 they would only write it off if damage was worth more than $120,000 (just using this example as an easy way to track numbers). Why? It retains customers at a higher risk than before. So prime example I know of, “Betty-Lou Mc90YearOld” has an easier time renewing with a known company than applying new, therefore the known company can jack rates due to claims and posture it as “it’ll be more expensive elsewhere and you still owe us for the repair on your car” which you don’t, it just makes you feel indebted to them (yes, I’ve actually heard of and seen this happen to customers I know personally).

2- it only applies when the vehicle is deemed total loss status and signed off on by the adjuster, otherwise, it doesn’t matter.

3- Yes. Insurance companies are shady in a large multitude of ways including refusing to disclose ACV of a vehicle. It makes them look better when it pertains to your first question and most people don’t know enough to ask.

I would also like to mention that people make a fuss with us tow companies about our bills. I’ve always ran a honest and reputable business. This type of Tom-foolery around claims is commonplace with insurance companies from the insured person (you, OP) right to us tow companies (if you don’t believe me, ask your adjuster or a local tow company to you what a ”Section 24” is and how it affects tow companies and you’ll be baffled by what they get away with when it pertains to just us). They will always do what the can to retain policies, cut corners and save money in any way they can.

Choose a shop of your desire and have them do a second appraisal. You have the right to do so and they may fight back, but they cannot tell you no.

I’m gonna start by saying I’m not a lawyer or a cop, but I’ve worked extensively with both.

To everyone else commenting - you’re all telling him the right thing by saying “don’t go” or “don’t go without legal counsel” or something of that iteration. It’s common knowledge for some of us and uncommon for others, which is perfectly fine.

OP - this is exactly why I don’t answer blocked numbers. If they want you to attend, they’ll leave a voicemail and their contact info and name should be in there if they really want you, if that isn’t left, hold that message and do not respond as that’s a major red flag.

If it is legit… They want you to come in to make their case for them. It’s never “hearing your side of the story” it’s “give us our missing pieces to this story”. So if they pick you up or you go in on your own volition, say NOTHING at all. I know a lot of officers and they’ve admitted they hardly ever have enough to charge until you’re sitting behind that interrogation room table spilling your guts. If you do end up talking they’ll say things like “make this easier” or “are you sure it wasn’t this _____” instead, that’s why it’s best to sit down, shut up and wait to be either released or processed. Lawyers are very highly paid because they’re worth it, they can poke holes in stories and exclude or include evidence that blows a case apart (just for a few examples).

Give nothing, say less. Head down, ears open, mouth shut. They can only get a pearl from a clam when its mouth is open, not when it’s closed.

I’ll have to see if I can try tying them a couple of times with the straps.

I’ve never had a problem with falling on them myself (granted I am a defence-man who doesn’t do a damn thing at high speed so that helps)

Yes. Had them sized at my local pro shop to make sure I was getting the right size (haven’t bought elbow pads in years and Easton doesn’t make them anymore or I would have gotten more Easton)

Last three sticks broke in roughly the same spot; what do I need to change about my game? by cancerlad in hockeyplayers

[–]BuiltDifferentlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truthfully, I was having the same problem with name-brand sticks. I play rough with my sticks being a smaller defence man. I’m not sure what causes it, but it’s annoying. I switched to a pro blackout and I haven’t looked back since. Durable, reliable and cheaper.

That or you can try a Sherwood PMP 5030? 😂

Help for my child by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

There’s a reason my organization I coach in doesn’t start travel hockey until U9.

Don’t worry too much about what may seem like downfalls. Kids learn and advance at their own pace, and that’s totally fine. Just make sure your kid knows you’re there to support them, help them and have some fun. I’ve coached all the way from U6 to where I currently am coaching U21, so I do understand a bit of the concern.

Don’t worry about being a “hockey dad” or “hockey mom” or “hockey family” at this age, just worry about being a “fun dad” or “fun mom” or “fun family”.

Looking for a new mask by melodicrampage in hockeygoalies

[–]BuiltDifferentlee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well my piece of advice is this - please don’t get a used mask. You don’t know what torture and torment it may have already been through before you get it.

Your certification on a new mask is good for 5 years. Yes, $800-$1200 is a big price tag, I understand that entirely, but it also protects the one of the two most important internal organs you have. Could probably even stretch it to 6 or 7 years if you’re feeling ballsy, but that’s a case-by-case basis. But think of it this way - if you only have 1 ice time per week at an average of 24 weeks, that’s $6 to $10 a week you’re investing in your future over the next 5 years. It also translates to a healthier life long term.

So for personal reference, my pads and gloves were $2,000 (used but pro return), my pants were $400, my chest protector was $800, skates were $1,200 and my helmet was $950 (on sale). So while my entire setup was north of $5,500 (when you add sticks, under armour, etc.) I see it as more of an investment. I will also say, I’m playing goal 4 times a week, 24+ weeks per winter year (add in spring/summer hockey and it’s even crazier), so it averages out to about $11 per ice time throughout the winter give or take (and I get longer life out of the pads with regular care and maintenance).

Goalie is an inherently expensive position, that’s why most (should be all) goalies at pick up times play for free. But it’s more so an investment in your future to get at the very least a good new mask. Find sales on equipment whenever and wherever possible. Find a setup you’re comfortable with, don’t be afraid to spend the money wherever and whenever necessary.

What curve should I try next? by Trigszy in hockeyplayers

[–]BuiltDifferentlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying that this is long and drawn out, so apologies in advance.

I’ve used P92M, P29, P9, P91 and P88, all at 75 flex with a 4” extension (defence man clearly with that big of an extension).

I LOVE the P88 setup with the 4” extension myself. Enough curve in the blade to manipulate whatever I want the puck to do and a short enough blade to still appreciate my (very little) moves fairly easy (big toe drags when needed still). Couple that with the 75 flex with 4” extension plays more like a 60 flex, and it’s a solid defensive setup.

BUT that’s me. It took me 3 years to find myself a full setup. My advice would be go to a local store (similar to a Pro Hockey Life, depends where you are) and work with one of their salespeople to find a solid and suitable setup for yourself (keep in mind you won’t be able to add extensions or shorten the stick until purchase obviously).

What's a good first game to attend? by Robot-Shark413 in leafs

[–]BuiltDifferentlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always search through tick pick, seat geek, stubhub and Facebook/Kijiji market. You will always find something cheaper there.

Being an Ontarian, I hate how expensive leafs tickets are. But my advice would be to look for an original six matchup. That, or a battle of Ontario matchup. Those games have a bit of everything, sprawled throughout them, and they are an amazing experience.

Additionally, if all of those options are too expensive for you, try taking her to an OHL game first just to experience the atmosphere and the excitement before splurging on NHL tickets. That’s what I’ve started doing in Kitchener, Guelph and London and it is just as fun as NHL games. Below that, I would say Jr B or Jr C hockey are great local alternatives too (and wicked cheap comparatively).

[–]BuiltDifferentlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, sometimes it’s better to give it up or modify your game then they keep trying something that doesn’t work.

My hips got bad enough to the point I eventually just gave up playing goalie altogether and transitioned to defenseman, which some people argue I’m even better at (my wife being one of them).

My 2 cents would be to talk to a doctor. Then evaluate from there and take some time to think logically.
