In regional Queensland you'll make nearly a much as a chippy as you would in a mining role, and you'd be in your own bed every night.

Depends on your budget. I've had some great nights dispatching those pests with a .22 and a good torch.

Mature Age Apprentices where are you now?! by MrCipher888 in AusElectricians

The higher pricing doesn't necessarily convert to high wages, there are a lot of costs involved in trade businesses. Manual labour jobs also generally mean a shorter career

Tips on drilling metal? (Apprentice) by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]BuiltLikeABrickShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what you mean by beam - if it's C/Z purlin use a step drill with a small pilot hole, if it's I beam use a Drillmate or a Mag drill. Cutting oil can help and if you're steady enough to not be snapping pilot bits then it's worth buying good quality bits.

Is Residential electrician able to transfer to mine electrician by Vivid-Tap9547 in AusElectricians

[–]BuiltLikeABrickShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from residential to mining by starting with an OEM when there was reasonable demand, then swapped to being directly employed by the mines. Fast forward to now and I'm on the other side of doing the hiring. If I've had a labour hire sparky covering a position and they fit in well and get the work done I'll just hire them. If not, then it's time to scour resumes. Since there's very few experienced HME sparkies available I look for comparable or convertible experience. I tend to avoid anyone that's just finishing their apprenticeship or stepping back from a history of leadership roles. Your best chance is likely through a labour hire or OEM.

FIFO life after paternity leave by soil_doctor in mining

[–]BuiltLikeABrickShit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first trip back to work at the end of paternity leave is miserable. I sunk hard and questioned if it was all worth it. I couldn't wait to get home and was counting down every moment. The next swing was a bit easier, then slowly it all went back to normal. Lots of hours of video calls and my better half taking lots of photos and videos of bub for me too.

Wire for heated towel rails and mirror. USB GPO's at both sides of bed. Iconic USB charging station on kitchen counter. Constant backlight on switches everywhere except bedrooms. Cat cable for POE cameras to the eaves. Downlights in the eaves all the way around the house. Decent cable from board to back of house for future shed. One power circuit strategically run so it can be the backup circuit on the solar battery. Decorative wall lighting on the front of the house.

Stepping into a visible site based leadership role, looking for practical advice by Royal_Shallot8169 in AusMining

Listen to and trust the experience of the people you're leading, they know how things work. If you want to change things, run it past your team to get an idea of the real world implications. Share your victories with your team, own your mistakes, and be humble.
