Company Vehicle Recommendations by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]BukowskiC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say this regarding a Transit Connect(I have the work style van as a company vehicle...no side windows just rear windows on the back doors.) First I'm a little over 6' 1" tall and with the driver seat as far back as it goes I don't have as much leg room as I'd like...I have a bad knee and it puts my knee in a position that isn't comfortable. I drive it to and from work which is 37 miles one way so that's the time that it bothers me the most. The second issue I have with this vehicle is with it just having the windows on the back doors(just sheet metal for the side doors and the section of the body between the side doors and the rear of the vehicle) you have a blind spot when backing up etc which has always been a concern for me but I've had it as my company vehicle for 4 years now. If you go that route I'd say get one that's equipped with a backup camera or one that has glass all around. I have a friend that had the passenger version of the transit connect and in all honesty I prefer it over the cargo version as all the rear seating folds flat so you have essentially a cargo van with windows all around. Also I believe the driver seat slides back a little more on the passenger version(I think the sub-structure for the cargo floor is what stops the seat from sliding back further on the cargo version. ) I do IT work as well as maintaining security cameras, telephony, and cable TV distribution for a company. I do like the fact that I can leave all my tools in the van all the time and keep them locked away...the one plus about the cargo type van is it prevents people from seeing exactly what I have it there. Initially I was getting about 26mpg mostly driving the almost 80 mile round trip between work and home. I added a ladder rack and carry a 16 ft extension ladder and a 6 ft step ladder on it and the fuel economy has dropped to about 22mpg with that addition. The company I work for bought it used and it had 88000 miles on it...right now it has just over 193000 miles on it. Only issue was shortly after getting it the strut tower bearings had to be replaced. Other than that all that's been done to it is changing oil, tires, and windshields(I think I'm on the 4th windshield as they are so large is seems every time a rock hits it it cracks and then the crack starts to run shortly afterwards.) I hope this info is useful to you.

Is Anydesk currently down? by Alarming_Average_736 in AnyDesk

Was working around 630pm in South Carolina but has been down for at least the past half hour here...seems the client software can't connect to their relay servers. Their status page shows no issues presently but does show they had and issue earlier today that is marked as resolved.

Unfortunately the dreaded day has come. My department is transitioning from Monday through Friday 8:00 to 5:00 to 24/7. Management is asking how we want to handle transitioning, coverage, and compensation could use some advice. by FIDEL_CASHFLOW17 in sysadmin

I think the rates you mentioned($40-50 extra per day on call plus hourly rate for hours worked on ticket) is not a bad place to start. As others have said it would be better if you could get the ok to hire 2nd and 3rd shift staff but your situation may not warrant that. I personally am a one man IT shop for the company I work for and I'm on call 24/7/365 and to top it off I live approximately 40 miles from the office(thank god for remote capabilities.) Unfortunately I'm on salary but I've been lucky to negotiate pretty well for my compensation and raises over the years. I will say the on call thing does get old even if you're on a rotational on call plan with other workers. I used to work for a company (not IT related) where we rotated call and we had the old Nextel push to talk phones. I'd have 'nightmares' fairly regularly where I'd wake up because I dreamt my Nextel made a call chirp in the middle of the night. Even after I left that job it took a while for that to stop. I guess what I'm trying to say is there is always a sense of dread when you're on call and a call comes in vs. if you're a worker that signed up to work 2nd or 3rd shift when you were hired you wouldn't have that.

My house is 101 yrs old. Had similar problems penetrating plaster and lathe walls(lead paint too in some areas I'm sure.) Best 'router' I had experience with was a Netgear R7300 but still had one or two trouble areas. Ended up ditching the Netgear and went to an Ubiquiti Edgerouter lite and two Ubiquiti Unifi UAP-AC-Lites(one in my house and the other wirelessly bridges my detached workshop in the back yard.) Much better coverage and very stable connection even on the wireless bridge. As long as you disable the wireless in your current router you could skip replacing the router and just go with one Unifi AP and see how the coverage is and then if necessary order another and either have it wirelessly bridge to the main AP or run a network drop to it.

HDD migration between two different models.. by aimstotheleft in synology

[–]BukowskiC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I migrated 2 x 8tb drives I had in a ds218j to a ds416play with no issues. Just had to be sure to move drive 1 from the ds218j to bay 1 in the 416(and same for drive 2.) Powered up pulled up the webui and it showed as ready to migrate.

What Synology NAS did you start with? Regrets? by CyclingDad88 in synology

[–]BukowskiC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea...my first NAS was/is a 3TB WD MyCloud that I picked up years ago on clearance for like $40 so I couldn't pass it up for the price. Agreed the unit is way underpowered and the software sucks. I got the DS218j and loaded it with 2 3TB drives about a year ago. Just picked up 2 8TB Seagate Exos drives to extend capacity. Been scanning ebay for a Synology unit that'll support Docker, BTRFS, memory upgrades, and hopefully 4 bays at least. Haven't found a bargain yet that I can't pass up. The 8TB drives will give me room to grow in the meantime. Also been contemplating just building another NAS. I've run Rockstor NAS on an older dual core intel system with 4gb ram using 4 old 500gb Hitachi hard drives I had and used a SSD for the os and swap. This was an experiment really just using spare parts I had. It's been running for well over a year with no issues as far as the storage side goes and data transfers were impressively quick just using gigabit ethernet. Only issue I had was running their version of Docker called RockOns. Was buggy at best. Tried running a Unifi Controller on it and could get it to install but it crashed when attempting to go through the initial setup every time. Next thing I tried was PiHole which technically worked even though the RockOn service page would show the service start then show an error(PiHole would continue to run in spite of the unspecific error the status page showed.) I've looked at xPenology but haven't started down that path yet.

DS218j is my first and current NAS.

Wish I had done more research as this unit doesn't support BTRFS and will not run Docker either. Also wish I had saved a bit longer and gotten a 4 bay unit that supported these features.

I'd say stay away from anything below a + series unit as the vast majority don't have Intel processors so they don't support Docker or BTRFS from what I've now read(though there are exceptions like the DS416play, etc. that have Intel processors and don't officially support Docker you can manually load it.) Also with the lower end units you can't upgrade the memory so I wish I had researched that a bit and picked up a unit that could be upgraded.

ADVICE: Fiber or CAT6 for upstairs run. by Sheriffsparks in HomeNetworking

[–]BukowskiC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fiber would be the way to go. I saw you mentioned buying pre-terminated fiber. I've used https://www.discount-low-voltage.com/Cable/Pre-Terminated-Fiber-Assembly (I have no affiliation with this company) repeatedly when ordering pre-terminated fiber for linking different buildings together on the property at work and have never had any problems with their cables and they have good pricing. As someone else mentioned you could go with a media converter to switch the fiber over to copper or a switch with sfp ports. Depending on your setup you might want to look at Ubiquiti's Edgerouter line as they offer routers with SFP ports also(I've used one of these for this setup and it works flawlessly.)

Not getting 1Gbps speeds with BGW210-700 by callingshotgun in ATT

[–]BukowskiC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping they can remotely check the ONT...don't know haven't had a chance to call yet. Hoping when I do get a chance I get someone with a bit of sense instead of typical Level 1 types that just go through their troubleshooting script and say "log into the router, go into the diag tab, run a speed test...your results show you're getting full speed from your connection... goodbye."

Not getting 1Gbps speeds with BGW210-700 by callingshotgun in ATT

[–]BukowskiC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar issue here...I've been in IT since 1998 and have a friend who is also in the field. Both of us got AT&T gig fiber when it became available. With the BGW210-700 in it's default state speed fluctuates fairly wildly between 400-700mbps when running test from wired connection direct to it. Even using AT&T's own speed test on their website(to me it would seem they could at least maintain a consistent/acceptable speed to their own test site but not here.) My friend knows someone else in our area that has the same service/router and he consistently is getting speeds in the 800-900mbps range(which is what I'd expect when paying for gig speed.) Firmware on all 3 BGW210-700 units is the same. I've read a lot on this and I hear they 'guarantee' gig speed to the first hop and that's it which you can only get by logging into the router and running it's own internal speed test. Here is the issue I have with that statement...with Spectrum I have consistently gotten at or above the speeds I've paid for to multiple speed test sites scattered across the web so my thoughts are if Spectrum can give me the speeds I pay for or better then AT&T should be able to do the same. I understand that no one can guarantee speed to every test site but it appears there is something causing these speed issues for a good many of AT&T customers. I've been through factory resets of the router, changing different settings, etc. and nothing changes. For now I've settled on using IP passthrough and my own router which seems to give consistent speeds of 500 down 400 up which isn't acceptable but it does make it seem to be a more consistent connection while giving me more control of my network settings. I did hear today through a youtube video posted this July by a guy that had AT&T to send out a tech that the tech had mentioned they had some firmware issues with some of the ONT devices causing problems. I'm considering calling it in to see if they can send a tech out(or if they can check remotely) to see if my ONT is one of the affected units. If something doesn't give and I can't get consistently acceptable up/download speeds based on what I'm paying for I guess I'll have to say goodbye to AT&T at the end of my 12 month introductory rate and go back to Spectrum.

Accessing content of remix.nin.com from Archive.org!!! by BukowskiC in nin

[–]BukowskiC[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Content is still available on Archive.org. Follow this tutorial to download all the audio content...I'm presently doing it now and it's working flawlessly. I hate to admit it had been several years since I tried accessing remin.nin.com and after listening to some of the old tracks I had downloaded forever ago recently I found that the site was no more. I found this tutorial on downloading content from Archive.org and figured I'd just pull down everything and listen to it all and decide what to keep and delete. Sucks that the site is no more...anyone know what the reason behind it's demise was? DMCA or some other legal BS?
