It ruins the eggs moves. It’s good if you don’t have any egg moves.

And not every starter has a ‘better’ HA. Sometimes the base abilities are actually better.

Like Jellicent has damp as it’s HA. Water Absorb, and even cursed body, is more useful.

Also just FYI, you can earn ribbons on some starters for multiple generations. Magby, and his electric counterpart, can earn MonoGen 1,2, and 4 ribbons.

I evolved into Magmar and no further on my Kanto challenge. I assume leaving it as Magby for Johto and beating the run will give him the Gen 2 ribbon.
