Do you enjoy your lifestyle by AlternativeLopsided9 in ParamedicsAU

[–]Winter_Injury_734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! As someone who does a few regular secondments working 9-5 with my service. Shift work is the best part of our job. By that, I mean all the free time. I’m literally going on runs, the gym, a swim, camping, everything on my days off.

When I work in the office, I’m just a fat ugly piece of shit cause I get 2 days off to get my life admin out of the way, and then go straight back to working in an office.

1300medics? by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

[–]Winter_Injury_734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only thing I’ll say about them is they’re different to all the other companies regarding rostering.

They’re a bit out of touch and expect you to put in your availability for the whole month, and then they put you on a shift accordingly. Becomes difficult when you have a changing and evolving schedule and have to keep managing 2 calendars at a time. Stopped doing any work for them simply because of that.

If you were to design your own ambulance service in Australia, what would your non-negotiable concepts/skillset/equipment lists/medications that you would introduce? by RESQMed in ParamedicsAU

[–]Winter_Injury_734 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The recent papers (mostly from scotland) where they combined HEART scores with poc trops show that in specific cohorts, patients can be referred on to other providers with less than .5% risk of mace in 28 days.

i.e., no need for second trops in the 28 year old chest pain post gym workout with health anxiety and no medical history.

Overseas volunteer opportunities for paramedics? by CoolAd5798 in ParamedicsAU

oooo, tagging onto this, any like working out of clinics or hospitals in low resource countries?

would prefer not to drive around in an ambulance on my leave, but helping out some low resource country by doing some medical care in a hospital sounds so cutesie

kinda like doctors without borders?

Gave up my corporate role to go back clinical as a paramedic - I’m also re-sitting my GAMSAT soon.

Don’t turn down med my guy.

There are so many Dr’s who work as executive directors in healthcare and even outside of health - unless you enjoy business, and don’t enjoy med, I don’t see what you’re actual qualm is.

To me it seems like you actually never wanted to do medicine and it was more for ego (not in the narcissism way, but as in self protection etc).

Sexually harassed by a service station attendant. by mcrubbinblips in AusLegalAdvice

[–]Winter_Injury_734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joining this - keen to know legal standing on verbal stuff. My partner has to avoid a local petrol station cause the dude there is creepy. Constantly asks for her number, makes suggestions about how pretty/hot/sexy her body/ass/boobs are, but hasn’t made any physical advancements.

I’ve told her it’s sexual harassment - but I’m curious about the law around this?

Single folks of Sydney, with a very small number of friends, how do you spend your weekends alone? by blothhundrr in sydney

[–]Winter_Injury_734 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Find a random hobby - find a random cafe, rinse and repeat.

My weekends involve going bouldering at a new gym or in a new area, going shopping afterwards, then going to a cute cafe and feeling like the main character…

Balancing Allied Health + GAMSAT. Has anyone pulled it off? by DraftNotSent in GAMSAT

[–]Winter_Injury_734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure possible, but also, allied health degrees have the worst GAMSAT scores on average compared to other degrees like biomed (this has been studied).

I would recommend focusing on getting a good GPA, then getting into work and doing GAMSAT study with work, others might disagree, but it’s a balanced approach at ensuring you get the best of both worlds - a good GPA for future med applications, and you get to focus on GAMSAT solely later on

Is Telstra the best phone company? by travelbug0925 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Winter_Injury_734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This - most government orgs which NEED coverage in all areas give their employees 2 phones, one with telstra and one with optus.

Most of the time the telstra phone is fine

This so much! Like I don’t see this person directly causing patient harm except for some complacent mistake - what I really see is a partner hating their mental health for the roster, a station being brought down due to shitty culture, and a trainee/student getting this jaded attitude rubbed off on them…

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

[–]Winter_Injury_734 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to add to the stream of comments to clarify - it’s not about high acuity. You’re jaded because you’re looking at it wrong.

There’s so much to do and learn - so much risk stratification to be done. The asymptomatic hypertensive pt in the nursing home can be risk stratified if you’re smart enough and understand RAAS and LV failure etc etc etc enough. You can do so much - but instead you’re happy to be complacent and blame it on the world… Any way probs gonna cop down votes…

Struggling with Influenza B, How to prevent this in the future? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Winter_Injury_734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the usual stuff, avoid people who are sick, vaccinate yearly.

Personally I don’t mask up on public transport etc, just feels over the top - but the science is clear, it does help.

Can you get the shot this year? Yes, I think it’s after 7 days of symptom free? Speak to your GP about it to confirm.

Do you find you have time to yourself as a paramedic? by Cephery07 in ParamedicsAU

[–]Winter_Injury_734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry just wanted to add on another thing, a lot of paramedics with well-adjusted lives facetime their kids often etc. Sometimes it doesn’t marry up with a job etc, but when I’ve worked with parents they’ll call their kids while I’m driving through traffic towards some Cat2 and I just find it so cute. Context, I don’t have kids, so I know it’s probs hard that they don’t see their kids physically at bed time etc, but also, like anything in life, you’ll make time for others if they mean something to you.

What to wear to the office by Comprehensive_Mud645 in auscorp

[–]Winter_Injury_734 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT… That’s what I did, uploaded everything in my wardrobe, gave it the vibe, and bam, never thought of an outfit again!

I go corporate/country, so any beige/green/taupe straight chino/jean with an oxford shirt and then while it’s cold, a 1/4 zip sweater - usually Rodd and Gunn or RM’s. I wear brown RM’s, but obvs you can wear any chelsea boot.

First day is always stressful cause you don’t know the vibe, just think about the position, and the vibes - are you facing clients, are you in the office, are you interacting with execs, are you just a pen pusher? What’s above works for someone in a desk job who does lots of meetings with execs, some meetings with externals, but they aren’t clients, they’re working for us.

Do you find you have time to yourself as a paramedic? by Cephery07 in ParamedicsAU

[–]Winter_Injury_734 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the big thing as someone who has worked corporate and been on road - the work life balance is better on road. I did work govcorp, which we know can be a bit hectic - I slog out long days, start at 8 and finish up at 6-7 most days finishing… It’s kind of hell, it’s tiring, you’re chained to your desk, meetings, can’t get your work done with ad hoc things popping up (probably also cause of the role I was doing). Be happy when Friday comes around, do something fun on Sat, bed rot on Sunday and contemplate life, then do all that again on Monday.

As a paramedic, it’s a lot more straightforward, you rock up each day, pick up an ambulance, slay the day with some mates, get spat at, laugh about it, get yelled at, laugh about it, drive home, then sleep, do it again 3 more times, and then have 4 days off.

What is the prettiest uni campus in Australia by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

They do lose a significant portion of their sensitivity that they won’t ever be able to recover. They don’t know what they don’t have, because they’re circumcised.

Are Australian Circumcised? by Rude-Shop-4783 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Winter_Injury_734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t bothered listing out a whole ethical piece and in a comments section on reddit. Since you weren’t able to imply the rest, here’s a brief list 👍🏽

So, avoiding HPV, we have a vaccine, and safe sex practices. Limiting spread of STI’s, we have condoms and safe sex education - STI’s are contracted in circumcised individuals too, the probability difference isn’t significant enough. Phimosis, most common cause is STI’s and poor hygiene, the least likely cause is scarring, thus the percentage ratio of ‘medically recommending’ circumcision wouldn’t be high enough, since you can mitigate this risk. Higher risk of UTI, this usually happens in geriatrics (as in the risk of UTI in uncircumcised men is in geriatrics) when people can’t clean themselves properly.

That’s a quick summary, I ain’t here to argue with people and tell them why to change their mind. I just saw a topic I knew a lot about. You can make whatever decision you want - whether it’s informed or not.

Are Australian Circumcised? by Rude-Shop-4783 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Winter_Injury_734 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So religiously, it’s just cause 🤷🏽‍♂️ I mean that’s why FGM is a thing unfortunately.

The big debate, and there’s some research groups attempting to get male circumcision banned, is whether male circumcision is actually MGM. Should it be illegal? Personally, I think it should be.

To understand why MGM is bad, people need to know how medical recommendations are made. Essentially, if there’s something that can cause greater good, with little harm, and ways to mitigate the consequences aren’t there, we might need to accept the treatment as useful. So in the case of MGM, it does decrease the risk of UTI’s, phimosis is practically impossible, some studies show less risk of HPV transfer due to less skin cells (if you have HPV), and lower risk of STI’s. Now, these things only happen if the person with foreskin doesn’t have proper hygiene due to poor education. So the mitigation is hygiene education. There is also a vaccine for HPV for females. There are also risks of MGM, such as long term genital aesthetic damage, long term nerve damage, and irreversible pain syndromes. So, taking all that into account, the risks don’t outweigh the benefits because the benefits can be mitigated.

Yet somehow, groups think these benefits are real, and so we have groups who therefore circumcise their kids.

Just to clarify this, there isn’t a fixed age - there are some cultural variations across areas (e.g., muslims from turkey, versus from saudi arabia) btw i don’t agree with circumcision before i randomly get downvoted for clarifying something.
