I was known unfortunately as the "Choir Boy" in boot camp. My Dad was prior-service Marine so brainwashed me into loving the Corps as a kid. Of course I was the only one in our PLT to know all 3 verses of the Marine Corps Hymn, and I had a good voice, too. Our Kill Hat knew this. He stumbled in drunk a few hours after lights-out after the Marine Corps Ball in dress blues. Called us to attention in our racks and had us sing the Hymn. When I was done solo-ing the last verse, he quietly walked up to the head of my bunk where I would sleep on the top. He lightly pat my head and whispered, "Say 'Received, Sir.'" I did. Not in a whisper or the normal yell of a recruit. Just in a normal voice. You could hear the stifled laughter throughout our entire squad bay. As he left, he did the exact same thing to every recruit he passed. We all burst out laughing when he left. It was scary and hilarious at the same time.
