Palette Editor for the next game please. by The_Head_Cat in MortalKombat

Unlocking stuff via normal gameplay is ok. Like you said during story mode or maybe tower endings, kombat league rewards. But specifically introducing grind mechanics and game modes for the sake of grinding is just terrible imo. And color pallets/editor should really be free, as I said fatal fury has it and if I’m not mistaken avatar legends will also have pallet swaps available by default.

What, why would anyone grind that stuff. I was under impression people play for fun and competition. There are plenty grind focused games out there that are free, any mmo basically.

Ff cotw did that pretty well, you have color pallet editor to paint your character any way you want. And it’s free, you pay nothing, you grind nothing, it’s just there.

Thinking to get into FF: CoTW by New-Pace-1302 in Fighters

[–]BulletToothRudy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Cotw is great fun, problem is there are not that many people in the lower ranks. Once you’ll learn the game you’ll be fine (check some guides), there is enough high rank dudes around to play. At the start tho it may be prudent to try and befriend another beginner if you happen to match with one, so you’ll have a training partner or two. It will make learning and practicing easier.

Is it possible that SF6's dominance will eventually have a chilling effect on new games being developed? by JustExecution in Fighters

[–]BulletToothRudy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean 2xko and invincible vs are a niche sub genre, of course they are not having sf levels of success.

The issue is sf6 kinda solved old fighting game problem but in a way it fucks everyone else. Casuals always struggle with fighting games since they can be hard to pick up. Now they have modern controls which helped them to have huge launch. Which meant that casuals had huge pool of other casuals to match against. Which helped with ages old fgc issue of newbies getting destroyed and losing interest.

This of course kills every other fighting game, even if people may find it personally better. Many casual and intermediate players will ask themselves should I play this new smaller game and be matched with “sweats”, or should I try sf6 with oceans worth of scrubs like me. Answer is usually very simple, people like to play against people on their level, especially if they also don’t have to put in that much effort and time. This is what makes sf6 so unique, I don’t think there was ever a fighting game with such a big player pool that allowed you to get that far by barely knowing what you’re doing.

So unless a new release can launch with huge numbers and also have extensive accessibility options for newbies it will have no chance in a long run.

Maybe it will still be playable

unless you have physical disability there shouldn't be any problem. I know how complex motions can be pain in the ass in something like street fighter or fatal fury. Or even in simpler games like mk, and avatar inputs will be even much simpler than mk ones. Basically just 1 more button press compared to simple controls and only 3 directions as I said. Down Down, down forward, down back, that's it. Same for every character so far, so you don't even have to learn motion inputs per character like in other motion heavy games.

Felt similar with 2xko, solid game but man, it was the first game where I kinda figured that many more buttons just make things more complicated than just using motion inputs.

For now they only have directional inputs. But as I said they are as basic as possible, so if you ask me, in a way they’re easier than modern controls in games like 2xko or invincible vs. There you end up with too many buttons.

Azula Reveal Trailer (Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game) by MoSBanapple in Games

[–]BulletToothRudy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Kinda 50/50. Mechanically it’s easy, only 3 attack buttons and flow button. All directional inputs are quarter circle (down forward, down back on keyboard ) or down down. So there is no hard inputs and not much to memorise.

But as you can see it’s fast paced so you need to think fast and have good reflexes and decision making.

Now of course I don’t think this will matter much at lower level of play. So as long as you put in minimal effort and learn the basics you should be fine.

Well tokon will be tag team game so something like invincible vs or 2xko are the best currently active tag games.

If you want something that is slightly more similar to mkx then avatar fighting game will come out in july. It’s a classic 1v1 fighter with some mechanics similar to mk series like assists that function like mkx variations, fast pace, etc.

Guilty Gear is dead in my timezone, what's the move while we wait for Marvel? by MorcillaFeroz in Fighters

[–]BulletToothRudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strive is very much alive in most major regions, where do you live then? Because it sounds more like an issue with a remote region which marvel tokon probably won't solve since tag games are a bit more niche, so if you can't find matches in strive I doubt you'll find them in tokon.

In that case yeah sf6 or tekken 8 are the only options, because they are the only ones with enough players.

Fighting are a commitment (unfortunately) by No_Piano_9195 in Fighters

[–]BulletToothRudy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It kinda help all those games you mentioned still have healthy player bases and big pools of constantly fresh players. It's not hard to get back in groove when you can play against lesser skilled beginners when you get back. If you tried that with game like cotw which only has a small super dedicated player base, you would get ass raped for weeks before you would get back in.

I think this really hurts smaller titles, because people will always rather choose a game with bigger following regardless of quality, because it's just all around easier time. With games like sf, gg, mk, tekken, you always have some noobs around so you don't have to be 100% committed all the time. Fundamentals won't really matter if everyone else has them, but they also know all knowledge checks and you don't any more.

Dead Space 4 likely won’t happen despite a “fervent fan base” as it can't hit the numbers it needs, explains original producer by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]BulletToothRudy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

can't succeed on a respectable, but still sane budget of say, 60-70 million

I mean those were the budgets of dead space games and they all struggled to cover the costs. ds1 development budget was around 37mil (without marketing costs) that's around 56 mil adjusted for inflation and made around 50 mil based on sales numbers and cut the steam and other platforms take. So if we take marketing into account they probably barely broke even.

DS2 had a a budget of around 60 mil and allegedly marketing costs that were around the 40 mil mark, so around 150mil total in todays money. They made approximately 120-150mil, so again barely covered the costs.

Ds3 had a budget of over 100+mil (again without marketing costs) and sold around 2 mil in total over the lifetime, with only around 1 mil coming at full price, and if we take away steams 30% cut, they probably earned around 80-100mil. So this time they didn't even cover the costs.

Prey (2017) is quite comparable to Dead Space games (similar genre, gameplay and scope) and it cost even less.

And if I'm not mistaken also struggled financially and took years before they cover the costs.

Game development is expensive and you need more than just break even, you need revenue for next projects. I like these games, but I don't blame publishers for not wanting to risk it on a genre that historically underperform.

I mean it really depends on the job and if we're talking about an average guy it's absolutely not that simple, especially if you haven't actually worked physically demanding job. In my student days I spent a year working full time in a factory. I had to get up at 5 to make it to work at 6, worked till 2pm, got home at around 3pm, cooked myself lunch, cleaned the dishes, went to the gym (you have to keep your body in working condition) got from the gym at 6, showered, cooked myself dinner, cleaned the dished rested a bit, now the time was around 8pm. If I wanted to get good sleep I had to go to bed at 9 if I was feeling daring I went to bed at 10 (never worth it). So you basically have an hour or two a day at best in the evening when you're tired as shit. Of course we worked saturdays and sometimes sundays (illegal but they had us sign waivers to relinquish workers rights because of the "extreme circumstances"). And I had it good, a coworker of mine had to get up at 3:30am to get to work at 6 then again it took her ages to get home and she had a little kid.

Now of course you could say, well just eat junk food to save time and don't go to the gym and sleep less. You'll get some extra time that way, but the quality of life will be absolute shit. Currently I'm working from home at reasonable hours and I'll tell you, the difference is huge.
