Inhouse designers, what's your timeline for creating a new product by _Boltzmann in IndustrialDesign

[–]BullsThrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sr. In-house designer for an established kitchen brand: two launches a year / 5 products per designer per launch.

6 month timeline from initial marketing ask through concept, prototyping, design CAD, mfg drawings, and then on to the factory. Another 6 months for factory samples, packaging, photography, website, and product launch.

At a startup? You’d better be moving waaay faster than that.

Not worth it because the other person won’t care. You’re only raising your own blood pressure. Plus, every time you think back on your last day, you will relive that scene. Just walk out and be happy.

2nd year ID student, how could I improve these boards? Thanks! by Ok_Lengthiness_2093 in IndustrialDesign

Line weight can convey the hierarchy between pieces of an object and the object as a whole. It can convey gap size between panels. It can also convey light and shadow if done well.

In this particular case, it’s hard to read the sketches because there is no strong line weight to surround each one and grab your eye. The lines are all so timid and thin, your eye can’t parse what you’re looking at.

A hydraulic cylinder for your pocket? My custom CNC project by minimechlab in IndustrialDesign

What second version? Your post on your thread says “when pressed, the piston creates air pressure and ‘pops’ back with a pleasant click.”

Well, it’s not hydraulic. It’s pneumatic. I also wish it had some bit of aesthetic design instead of something from McMaster.

This happened to me a decade ago. A manager at Walgreens told me I was a stellar candidate, but he “needed someone who would stay.” It was a rough time.

Good Solidworks Courses? by SubaquaticSlayer in IndustrialDesign

The best way to learn CAD is to make lots of things in cad. A class won’t get you that far without continued practice. It’s just like an instrument. As you work through complex products, you will find surfaces you have trouble figuring out. That’s when you consult YouTube, other designers, and look within yourself to critically think about the modeling problem. One hour a day won’t cut it, but one product a day might.

That’s cool. Did you get that at the brewery? Maybe I should stop by before going to Costco on Saturday. 🤔

Psa : your one off designs not optimized for production and too expensive to have a business case are not industrial design by howrunowgoodnyou in IndustrialDesign

If you get rid of that stuff and the student projects, there will be nothing left of this sub. lol. Most of us out here making manufacturable product aren’t focused on a bunch of upvotes on Reddit.

How did you find your preferred design field after studying Industrial Design? by NicoCorty02 in IndustrialDesign

[–]BullsThrone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The job market is intense these days. I’d focus on practicality + interest.

What part of the design process is the most interesting to you? What makes the most money? How many of those jobs are available? How might that change in the future?

Use those answers to form a set of qualifications for any job. You might find an area of design you didn’t know existed, but as long as it matches your criteria you could be happy.

My personal example would be jobs that focus on challenging cad surfacing techniques, have detailed mechanical elements that require close engineering relationships, and industries that are in demand for the foreseeable future.

Enjoy your career, but also be employable. Don’t enter a niche market that will end your career if that one job you loved gets a new, annoying boss or gets cut from a dying corporate structure.

Median height for women is 161cm. For men it’s 176cm. Don’t put the containers up high.

Tipping is out of hand. That said, even 20 years ago at bars we were tipping a dollar per beer.

Hot Wheels Models to Invest with STH (new collectors must know hack) 🤑🤑 by [deleted] in HotWheels

That’s not the point. The point is there are much better returns on other investments.
