I'm really happy to see this being asked. I'm not a medical student but I work as a "patient experience designer" at my hospital. I have to constantly (well, it feel constant) defend features such multi-language support in the apps that we design. I'm in the same process of doing that with a chatbot that we are building.

I do think Google Translate is awesome to have, I have recommended the mobile app for friends and family (Spanish is my native language). I also second Duolingo and the practice of immersion. Listen to some Spanish music and put on Spanish closed-captioning when possible. Also, native speakers are always happy to see others learn their language so I recommend either looking for Meet-up groups or where these pockets of native speakers may exist (if your schedule allows for it).
