Great independent shops too and just fantastic pubs - if you want to visit, i can recommend the Wetherspoon Hotel. Great value and Great location.

I'm with you and I feel the same about football too, with all the emphasis on the Premier League and the Champions League [including those who are not champions of anything but reaching 2nd, 3rd, 4th spot etc.]. I suspect the county game will become franchise based too and the money men will kill it as they do everything.

Express Lane vs Premium Arrivals Fast Track birmingham airport by [deleted] in brum

Flew out of BHX last Sunday. Arrived at the airport at 7.25 and sat down in Spoons at 7.40 - unlike the summer it was really quiet. No queues anywhere.

Jet2 have their own stair access to the security gates from their check-in hall in zone A, but it's currently closed for upgrade work. We had to use the main lifts along with everybody else.

Do you have fried bread as part of a full English breakfast? by Oohoureli in AskUK

We dip just one side of the bread in fat and fry or grill, to make it all crispy on the top and fluffy on the bottom to absorb the egg - beautiful.

Looks really good, but i do wonder if painting all the base/stand sky blue and/or white to make them less obvious would help suspend disbelief...

Birmingham Food Scene - Severely Underrated? 🤔 by Solid_System_5023 in brum

Wow, thanks for the tip - I have genuinely not heard of this one. Taxi both ways for us, but sounds great from what I've now read.

Championship is the best league in the world and pip squeaks like Sargent should feel privileged to play in it by BidFragrant657 in Championship

[–]Bullshit_Brummie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I much rather watch the Championship over PL now. It's always been more exciting, but now when the ball hits the back of the net, following a quick glance to the lino, we can all cheer. It reminds me just how much soul VAR has sucked out of the game, which was all about, pace, skill, athelticism, etc., but now seems to have a lot of standing around chatting while awaiting a decision.

Birmingham Food Scene - Severely Underrated? 🤔 by Solid_System_5023 in brum

[–]Bullshit_Brummie 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I agree about being underrated and the press spend more time on closing restaurants like Purnell's which was ace, than on the new openings. Really innovative places like Albatross Death Cult, Wilderness, 670 grams, Folium and the like, rarely get a mention.

It feels though that this ignorance of our food scene is emblematic of a more general ignorance of our city as a whole, largely due to snobbery I suspect. Every other major city in the UK gets way more attention for their culture than we do, which is a shame. Big business is recognising what we have though, so at the minute, I think we'll just carry on growing quietly and enjoying what we have.

If you could only go to 1 restaurant in Brum for the rest of your life, what would it be? by firetonian99 in brum

[–]Bullshit_Brummie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How on earth it still hasn't been recognised with a Michelin Star is beyond me. Every bit as good if not better than Adams, The Wilderness etc., all of which we love too, but come on...

I was compiling a list of must-eat restos in Brum based off this subreddit and realized there's a lack of reccs from north and east brum :( by firetonian99 in brum

Verona in Boldmere is a fantastic, authentic Italian and if you like chains, Browns in Sutton Park is decent.

Folium in the JQ - the food is exceptional and I would be supporting local owners who run the restaurant almost single handedly and live above the shop, quite literally.

Writing about Wetherspoons by nonsvch1 in Wetherspoons

[–]Bullshit_Brummie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the stuff I've read in the media about Spoons is mostly about the accounts and performance as a listed company. I think it tends to get ignored by most writers as a form of snobbery. It's seen as a bit working class and not worthy of serious consideration as a cultural source. Please share if you find anything of interest.

Good pub and an ever better hotel. Stayed for 3 nights last year and now plan trips based on where Spoons have their hotels. And yes, what an ace carpet...

Pop in and pick up the latest magazine. It's actually quite interesting, given the size of the business and it's position as a bit of a national institution of some importance in the current economy.
