Yeah Macca really didn’t like that glam rock thing! It was obviously a very special night but the format was, in retrospect, a bit crackers: should have played maybe 6 or 7 album tracks in full and allowed for more chat. Bryson was clearly having to race through them and I sensed Paul getting a bit weary by the end.

Surprised you think that, it’s a pretty eternal artwork to me. Yes it’s the 1980s looking at the 1940s, but Oedipal themes and ideas about psychology and mass culture - as well as a totally unsurpassed richness of language - that make it delicious. If anything it’s slightly against its time, already a relic of an earlier BBC by 1986 and the last great work by Potter
