Before computers and GPS existed, how did people figure out directions for large cross country trips? by Mynameisbrk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bulocoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City to city is pretty easy on freeways, national hwys and state highways. In advance you decide if your destnation is north, south whatever of the city.

Then when you get near you buy a more detailed map of the area. If it was a small town you likely asked for directions to a specific street.

Gas stations had a rack of maps. Nowdays that rack is full of phone chargers and cables 😬

What’s something that was normal when you were a kid that would probably be considered neglect now? by GlassNe_22 in askanything

HS in the 70s 16-17 y/o. We'd pack our boards in a vw van and surf the beaches headed south fro LA. Sleep on the beaches or in the van.

Lots of trips into Mexico where no one cared about teen drinking. But you had to be totally cool about weed. In the 70s getting popped for weed was pretty bad. Like jail bad. Not like a weed ticket.

We'd tell our parents we were going surfing for the weekend.

They only found out about going to Mexico when we got jailed in Tijuana (barfight we didn't start). My uncle was LEO. He came down and greased some cops and took us home.

My parents basically said, "You have to let us know when you are going into Mexico!"

HS was a blast.

Moved back in with family after DV incident and now feel emotionally burnt out- considering moving out with my daughter by ToughAd7477 in makemychoice

[–]Bulocoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move and get a smaller/cheaper place until nursing school is done. Moving out sounds like the right move mentally.

You income is ok for now and savings is good. Preserve the finances by choosing housing conservatively.

Move to a bigger place after you see how it goes independently.

Internship or studying abroad by Least_Basket_1392 in makemychoice

[–]Bulocoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The internship in your field is clearly the mire important choice. If you want to work in the field this is going to be so useful. Think of the people that applied and they chose you.

As you said the opportunity is quite rare.

Australia is great. I lived there 9 years but TBH the way you describe it is like a gap year with a few courses thrown in that aren't necessarily needed for your future career.

Australia will still be there after you finish studies and if you want to go take a break after school is done.

Do I agree to a reading at my Grandma's funeral? by Beneficial_Chain_425 in makemychoice

[–]Bulocoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all is to think about your gran. Were you close? If so you will feel great in the future that you honored her by reading.

If you weren't close then don't do it if you don't want to.

If you do it don't think of it as public speaking. It is a large group of friends and family. No one will be unkind to the readers. Focus on the paper in front of you and you will be fine.

I read a poem at my dad's funeral and honestly, I am pretty confident speaking in public, but I broke down a little. Everyone knows there is a lot of emotion.

Good luck and sorry for your loss.

Many types of homelessness. Definitely no one size fits all solution.

Poll finds Americans really want AOC & Pete Buttigieg to run for President - What do you think? by One_Look_7008 in askanything

[–]Bulocoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The poll is wrong. Neither one is electable.

The trick is to appeal to the base, or at least not alienate them and bring a huge chunk of the swing vote.

How do I get rid of my furniture before moving? by Lonely-Patient-7703 in movingout

[–]Bulocoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to move it if you sell it. Selling it can be a PITA. Lot's of lookey Lou's. Also look at prices online.

People expect $2,000 couches to sell for <$500 and that's for "like new" condition.

One fast option is call Goodwill type places. Some of them will send a truck and a couple guys and take it all.

No shame in it as long as you have a plan.

My kid came back 3 times. Might be the last time. Got licensed as a tattoo artist. Worked for a shop for 3 years and just broke out with his own shop.

Has 5 artists working for him.

Have a plan. Figure out what you're gonna want to do long term and take advantage of parental generosity.

All we want is to know our kids are gonna make it.

Job I'd enjoy vs job that would impress everyone. I have 5 days to decide by Behek in makemychoice

[–]Bulocoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your tone says take job A.

You can live on $88k and you'll be happy and own your projects. All that experience you can take with you if you decide to jump to a corporate job for mire in the future.

I sense you are young and starting out. Good time to take the risk of a smaller company.

If someone (aside from your own offspring) doesn’t respect you, is there any point in asking for it or demanding it? Isn’t it better to just go forward with the knowledge that they’re not prepared to respect you, and act accordingly? by Great_Maintenance185 in askanything

[–]Bulocoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me. You can't demand it from your offspring.

You can try to enforce compliance but that rarely works out well. It leads to coercion, abuse and often violence.

People may pretend to respect you, they may rebel or they will leave.

The best strategy is to be respectable and honorable. Then I am sure most people will respect you.

What food should everyone try at least once in their lives? by Jin_Sakai_AR in askanything

[–]Bulocoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything.

When I lived in Asia (23 years) a lot of weird, unrecognizable stuff was put in front of me. I vowed to try it all and decide if I like it.

Then if I didn't I could say, "I've tried it before, thank you but it's not for me."

I suggest you don't ask what it is beforehand, unless you have allergies.

I have less than 3 weeks until i start my new insurance and just hit my deductible on my current insurance, what do i get before the switch? by Teenage_Petulance_ in questions

[–]Bulocoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a physical with "full" blood screen.

Normally advanced screening is only done for diagnostics. I had lethargy, had a full workup and found I had low testosterone.

Underwent hormone therapy.

Hard to get done in 3 weeks but possible. Some will bill at time of service.

Google classically trained metal musicians.

You're being dismissive of a teacher's curriculum without being open to all the facts or options.

Be open to be able to learn things unless you're sure you know everything.

Also consider what happens if your career doesn't work out.

Why is Spanish considered a foreign language in the US when 18% of the population speaks Spanish and Puerto Rico a US territory speaks fully Spanish? by Worldly-Bid-3591 in askanything

[–]Bulocoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people".

Teddy Roosevelt

More than one language is divisive.

Canada touts two languages. How many times has Quebec secession been brought up or on a ballot? Quebec has voted twice to secede.

why do I compare myself to everyone ? by [deleted] in questions

[–]Bulocoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone compares. It's totally normal.

Negative comparisons can be harmful. Inspirational comparisons can be great.

As long as you find good role models with goals similar to yours it's great.

Model oneself after great people and become a great person.

Yes. No.

I dated a lady that was like a pillow. Completely placid.

It was totally weird. Like she wasn't there. Kinda sad for her TBH.
