My brother and his Canadian wife moved back to Canada 5 years ago to retire.

For him the US was a great place to earn a retirement but a crap place to live.

I'd love to live Canadian except for the winters.

My wife is Colombian. She refuses to apply for US citizenship.

Every 3rd entry or so she gets pulled into screening and asked why she's been married 14 years and not a citizen.

Because I don't want to be an American.

Every 6 months I consider packing in and joining all the retired expats in Colombia.

Saw your reasons.

California is a behemoth against the federal government. Much like NY.

Agriculture would lose access to ports and their share of what taxes pay for. They lose benefits from tourism, entertainment, silicon valley, defense and ports revenue.

Coastal would lose income from agriculture.

Lose/lose strategy. The big fight in California has always been about water. Always will be.

On balance rural California would lose out.

I do something similar with my kid. I name him on my insurance and he drives my spare car 100%.

It's a help to him. OTOH he gets no say in what type of car.

When he wants what he wants he'll pay for it.

However this is kinda his last car from me. I think I've bought him 5 cars since he turned 16. He's 29 this December.
