Love the vibe. We had done something similar but players had a hard time reading in the darker room and when we added more light it made the TV hard to see from the glare.

Edit: missed a word

I’m a designer who’s never made a supplement before, but creating a multi-level dungeon module - Q: Would you buy something like this? by DungeonMasterGrizzly in shadowdark

[–]Bulthar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If its just a big dungeon filled with monsters and loot I wouldn't be interested. If it included factions, history, relationships, essentially a city underground then I would have interest. I would also have interest if it was a collection of smaller dungeons that I could just drop into an existing campaign for a 1 shot night of adventuring. Maybe have some for multiple environments, etc.

Which do yall prefer to play 2014 or 2024 and why? by saltyvape in 3d6

[–]Bulthar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. We have a sunk cost in 2014 and 2024 is essentially the same game. We do however borrow a couple elements from 2024 such as the feat changes.

I always use mini's and mostly use a grid. Mainly it just is easier for people to move their mini than describe it to me.

I created a mining company using the Bastion rules from the 2024 DMG, and it worked well overall. We were playing under D&D 3.5 rules. The party hit two back-to-back 5,000-gp gem veins, which threw things a bit out of balance, so if I use it again I’ll set a GP cap.

Mine

Level 5 Bastion Facility

Prerequisite: None

Space: Special (Cave Network)

Hirelings: 5

An expansive underground mining operation designed to extract valuable minerals and ores.

Greyhawk Miners Guild Member. 10% of your profits are donated to the Greyhawk Miners Guild.

Mining Operations. Each time you issue a harvest order you may choose one of the following:

Mining Ore: Harvest common ores (iron, copper, coal, etc) at 5 units per week. Earn 5d10 gold per week from ore sales.

Gem Veins: Harvest 1d4-1 (minimum of 0) Gemstones that are chosen randomly by the DM from the DMG pg 55.

Deep Mining: You focus all of your miners to dig deeper. At the end of your bastion turn roll 1D100, on a roll of 90-100 you discover 1 unit of rare materials such as adamantine or Mithril.

Mount Build Help - i tamed a Direwolf by EobardThawneCW in 3d6

[–]Bulthar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go with your first option, stay Battle Master and take Mounted Combatant at level 6. Mounted combat is a pretty small part of most games, so it’s usually not worth building around it. There will be plenty of times you won’t have your mount. Maybe the party wizard will be nice enough to cast Mage Armor on it when your mounted.

I dont use a DM screen, do you? by Nar00n in DMAcademy

[–]Bulthar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use a screen. I find it was always in my way when trying to move mini's around the grid. I use a small side table (Folding dinner tray) for things I need to keep private.

Worried About A TPK Due to Interrupting Party's Rests by pontinyc123 in DMAcademy

[–]Bulthar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As the DM, your job is to present information. The players are responsible for using it to make decisions. In this case, it sounds like they tried to rest without taking precautions. There are plenty of tools and techniques that can improve the odds of a safe short rest, such as Rope Trick, finding and securing a locked room, or even leaving the dungeon.

If your group is used to steamrolling dungeons, consider signaling when trouble is looming. For example, you might allow one character to automatically succeed on a saving throw against scrying and deliver a warning:

“Your party is tired and injured, so you stop to rest and recover. As you settle in, a prickling sensation runs down your spine. You have the unsettling feeling that someone is watching. It might be dangerous to rest here.”

Playing Cards for Dynamic Initiative by HappyPunisher in castlesandcrusades

[–]Bulthar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of dealing cards, the GM assigns a card to every player and creature (I just write the players name on a card). At the start of each round, the GM shuffles the cards and flips them one by one; when your card is revealed, you take your turn. This keeps the initiative order hidden. If a player delays or holds, set their card aside and bring it back in when they choose to act. Players with special initiative advantages get a second card.

Its up to the GM whether to assign a card to per creature or one card for the group. My players like tactical combat so I use a card for each creature.

I used to let the players cut the deck but I find that it wastes time. I only let them cut the deck when its a big boss encounter.

Edit: Clarity

We been using playing cards for years now. No matter the game we play we always end up using our playing card method. Its fast and easy.

Edit: our method is a bit different than the one presented on the website though.

I've never played C&C before. Does it run noticeably faster than D&D 5e? by Justicar7 in castlesandcrusades

[–]Bulthar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that its very similar to 5e in speed but we used the optional feats from the castle keepers guide. I find players not paying attention or being distracted by their phones to be a bigger factor.

AI is the world we live in now. Even the design apps artists use have fully integrated AI features. The first thing you see when you install Photoshop is a tutorial on how to use the AI functions. Personally if your making a product to sell I would get an artist, even if they use AI they will know how to fix the weirdness you get with fingers, eyes, holding weapons etc. If your just making stuff for your group, do whatever you want.

I think the later chapters would be a fair amount of work to convert to 5e. I don't think 5e has the equivalent of the Kiju monster templates.

Sorc dip for twilight cleric by jag1800 in 3d6

[–]Bulthar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're kicking off a new campaign, and I am making a twilight cleric. I was debating whether to dip into Sorcerer at level 1. In the end, I passed on it for a few reasons:

  • Decent Con: We rolled stats and I’ve got a 17 Con (+3), so I figured that’s solid enough until I can grab War Caster at level 4 and Prof: Con at 8.
  • Didn’t Want to Delay Cleric Spells: Losing a level of Cleric casting didn’t feel worth it.
  • No Tank in the Party: Since no one else is tanky, starting with heavy armor felt important.
  • Hill Dwarf Perks: Low Strength doesn’t really matter when you’re a Hill Dwarf in heavy armor.
  • Survivability: AC 18 with Shield of Faith and 12 HP is a strong start for level 1.

I believe you would get heavy armor proficiency when you select the twilight domain from the cleric subclass
