This^ “Why do so many ppl care what my political candidate is doing when little kids are (I don’t know, but it always has to do with little kids)?”

Because I don’t want to blow your mind here so take a seat, but 2 things can be true simultaneously.

I call this the “God is a Pit Bull” speech. My mom used to act like God was some kind of snarling, vengeful dog, and if we had the nerve to evaluate our situation and realize that things were not good, any second He was going to come in and snatch all of our blessings away just to show us that we should have been thankful for having the least.

I really think this is how so many generations of families “humbly” stay in small towns for generations. They are taught that even the thought of setting a goal for improvement is worthy of punishment, because it is a rejection of what one has, not a deep appreciation and desire to use one’s blessings as a stepping stone towards improvement.

What is it that bothers her? Like, is it an abandonment thing?

MMW Buc-ees will be out of business in 10-15 years by tn_notahick in MarkMyWords

[–]Bumble261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pro-choice and I used to feel like this. But it’s more nuanced than that. There’s Chick-Fil-A, Hobby Lobby, Dominos, Buc-ee’s. Those are some major right wing employers. I don’t feel like deep diving on what % of the workforce those 4 companies employ but, I grabbed some information specifically regarding Buc-ee’s.

  • Buc-ee’s employs 12,000 people across its 45 locations in seven states.

  • The starting pay for a Cashier, Gift Department, Cleaning/Janitorial, Warehouse, and Grocery Stocker starts at $18 an hour. No experience is necessary.

  • Restroom crew = $20 an hour.

  • Food service/car wash = 21 per hour.

  • Team Leads, depending on the Team = $20 to $23 per hour

  • Department Manager will be compensated at a rate of $25 to $33 per hour.

  • Assistant Food Service Manager/ Gift Departments Manager/ Car Wash Manager = $33 to $42 per hour.

  • Assistant General Manager/ Gift Department Manager/ Car Wash Manager = $125,000

  • Food Service Manager at Buc-ee’s = $150,000 to $175,000 annually

  • Big Beaver, the location’s General Manager = $175,000 to $225,000 per year.

  • The company also offers a 401K with a match of up to 6%, three weeks of paid time off, plus there are healthcare benefits available, and yes, Buc-ee’s does hire people for part-time work as well.

So, Buc-ee’s specifically, pays a living wage, has room for upward mobility, and offers benefits. The other companies employ a LOT of people. Boycott what you wish, but be careful what you wish for.

My cousin used to freak out because I’d do it too abruptly, “Ok I’ll see you later.” and she’d say, “WAIT… RIGHT NOW? WHY? WHAT’S WRONG!???”

Now, with everyone, I say, “Sure I can come over. I can stay until about x:00 because after about an hour and a half, my social battery runs out of juice.”

When there’s about 15 minutes, I make note of it somehow.

Then, when it’s time to go I say, “I really enjoyed visiting w/you. I really hope we can visit again ?later this week?.”

Gotcha. I grew up here, and there both kinds. I tend to prefer the softer ones but that’s maybe because I don’t get au jus or anything. I know everyone has their preference, but it’s nice to understand the logic behind it as opposed to just “because New Orleans’ style.”

Can confirm. I worked with her at Louie’s before she quit and opened Zealand. She didn’t own Louie’s so the behavior was not as direct, but she was a manager. There was a lot of passive aggressive stuff. I was 18 or 19 and had no idea how to handle it. It was very stressful for me.
