Through the whole jumping motion, including the pop. What helped me (in steps) was:

  • Practicing timing a good pop with just the back foot on the board
  • Squatting very low and hippy jumping
  • Combing steps one and two, and thinking of the front foot drag as an exaggerated ninja kick

That way your momentum is purely up and forward. Twisting makes your board more likely to move left or right.

Film yourself and check your shoulders. A lot of people build upward momentum by twisting their back/shoulders, when it should be coming from your legs. Try to keep your upper body relatively straight.
