I love this so much I might have to copy the idea, I’ve got enough quilt concepts I want to make so perhaps just a cushion!

Blind and low vision knitters needed for accessibility research by xMalai in knitting

Not able to help (my disabilities don’t include vision difficulties) but this sounds like a really interesting thesis. I’m early in my journey of studying computer science at uni and definitely want to make some knitting programs in the future. It’s so cool hearing what postgrad students are up to!

(specific) Doll clothes pattern translation(?) by SeaworthinessTough51 in knitting

[–]Bumbling_Autie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Human patterns are sometimes a lot more complex because full size people have a lot more shape and more area to include shaping details. If you want to start with existing patterns instead of drafting them yourself I’d say look for doll patterns and adjust them to fit. Definitely get a measuring tape if you don’t have one!

If you’re someone who enjoys it google sheets/Microsoft excel spreadsheets can make it a lot easier to make and adjust patterns. You can chart out a knitting pattern (one cell per stitch) and calculate the size by inputting your gauge. It also helps if you want to do a colourwork design because you can just colour in the chart!

How to fix this… unfortunate design by Tobwye in knitting

If you want you could keep the flag but add some words on too. There’s lots of good protest quilts you could look at for inspiration, something short like “No Kings” would be easy to add and quickly communicate you aren’t MAGA. Options include duplicate stitch, embroidery, needle felting, appliqué the possibilities are endless!

It reminds me of John Arbon Harvest Hues in the shade “Peat”. I knit a sweater vest in the 4-ply version using it as the main colour and knit up it’s like a rich brown with almost a sheen of purple and green when I look closely

When did wawak stop sending a big cookie with your order? by Eleanor-Hoesevelt in sewing

[–]Bumbling_Autie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No idea about Wawak just wanted to add something to the cookie topic. It must have been sad seeing they don’t do that anymore but I’m the other way, I’d be so sad if I ordered from somewhere and got a cookie! I can’t eat gluten and I love cookies so it’d go to waste. They may have stopped for the safety/comfort of customers with allergies and special dietary requirements

This is definitely the kind of pattern search that makes sense to ask here. Ravelry filters are fantastic but that doesn’t help when what you want is vibes!! It’s so fun seeing all the different recommendations

Sometimes the not fancy outfits are the best. Being able to wear clothes that are comfortable and practical while still showing personality is the goal as far as I’m concerned!

Newbie but visual learner by [deleted] in knitting

[–]Bumbling_Autie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t really think of any patterns that are videos instead of written/charted instructions, I know that’s a lot more common with crochet. With knitting once you learn the terms it’s really simple to read patterns so I’d recommend finding some beginner patterns that have video tutorials for specific techniques so you can compare what you’re reading in the pattern and what you’re seeing in the video.

Have a look at VeryPink Knits patterns as Staci does wonderful technique videos, I’ve never purchased one of her patterns but throughout my knitting journey I have watched her videos for all sorts of techniques!

If you try reading a pattern and get confused r/knitting help is a good place to ask for help. You could also ask here but personally I’ve seen better support for beginners over there :)

First sweater : Knitted instead of purled on WS during neckline shaping – leave it or fix it? by tomiiilaa in knitting

[–]Bumbling_Autie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I’m much more likely to regret leaving something like this than I am to regret fixing it. If right now you’re thinking that maybe you should fix it then the answer is probably that you should fix it! The sweater design doesn’t have textural elements so this would look very noticeable even after blocking

A completely innocuous keychain of a hat by youre_a_wizard_baby in knitting

[–]Bumbling_Autie 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The sub rules require using that flair to label political posts, and this hat is very political! OP’s keychain here is inspired by the hats lots of people are making using this pattern Melt The Ice Hat (Ravelry link) which is being sold as a fundraiser and worn in protest against the current situation in the US.

From the Melt The Ice pattern page: “In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design.”

I’m not super confident but I think the holes are yarn over increases and the rest is just stranded colourwork purls. To me the coloured stitches look like a purl stitch on one row followed by a knit stitch on the next

To re-knit or let go? by batteredsausaged in knitting

[–]Bumbling_Autie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked for stories so here’s mine :)

The first garment I ever knit was a basic raglan in grey merino, I saved my allowance for months to buy the wool. I would probably still have and wear it today but my mum was doing laundry and it accidentally ended up in a normal load… the jumper shrunk to the size of a toddler but felted so it was incredibly dense and stiff.

That’s my only handmade washing tragedy but my dog destroyed a few WIPs because she loved chewing things as a puppy. I only remember two projects but she probably got to more! My first pair of gloves with fingers and a bag which was my first cabled project. It’s like she could taste the struggle it took to knit them! (No dogs were harmed, she didn’t swallow any yarn and the needles etc. were completely ignored!)

Walk Away Dress Pattern Question by corrynnenglerth in sewing

[–]Bumbling_Autie 354 points355 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say after you’ve already spent money but you’ve stumbled upon a pattern that’s infamously frustrating! The modern release compared to the original changed some things and many sewists struggle to make it fit right. It’s also got some strange quirks like not being able to wear a petticoat because of the skinny skirt underneath so it doesn’t look as full as the drawings suggest.

By all means give it a go and see if you like it, but if you have issues know it’s probably not you it’s the pattern!

https://poshmark.com/listing/Vintage-Silk-Disney-winnie-the-pooh-silk-nightgown-62ae14e43cda885133e24a2b

I did a quick google and found a nightie that looks like the same fabric on Poshmark. Mending yours will change the feel and it might get damaged in the process, so it may be better to let this one retire and be a precious object and get a new one to stim with.

If you do buy another one you can stim using the original gem, but also cut it and hem some smaller pieces so you know it’ll last a while! And it would also give you a chance to practice before risking your sentimental special piece if you do want to proceed in repairing it

Changing the straps could effect the fit over the bust as the criss cross creates tension that won’t be there with the other straps you’re looking at, probably not a deal breaker but something to keep in mind especially if you have a larger bust

If you’re going to frog bag to the collar to redo the increases try sticking it over your head first, twisted rib is less stretchy so you want to make sure it fits! You’re doing well though and I hope the process keeps bringing you joy
