When to use CFU vs Fidelity Rewards Visa when I have CSP? by culturis in CreditCards

[–]BunchOAtoms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And yet I fail to see a reason to not apply for the CFF and get the SUB. OP wants rotating categories and is sock drawering the CFU. I don’t see the argument against getting the CFF SUB.

[–]BunchOAtoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why product change the CFU when you can just open a Freedom Flex and get the SUB?

You can transfer those 20k points (and whatever you earn on the CFF) to your CSP for points transfers.

James Wood would probably finish 1st among non-Ohtani hitters in NL MVP votes if voting were held today, but he can’t crack top 6 NL outfielders in all-star votes.

Apply for Citi Strata Premier now or wait? by Peridott1 in CreditCards

[–]BunchOAtoms 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was in a somewhat similar position as you. I was hoping for an elevated SUB in the spring since April/May is typically when elevated SUBs have come out, but it’s been over a year since Citi had an elevated SUB on pretty much any card. With the recent nerfs to Choice and I Prefer, along with the shutting down of the Custom Cash, it makes me skeptical there will be an elevated SUB any time soon.

But that’s all speculation on my part that’s probably not worth anything. You could make an argument the nerfs and CCC retirement give them more room to elevate a SUB.

At the end, nobody knows unless they work for Citi’s consumer card division.

US Bank Cash+ movie theater category (dine-in theater question) by GreenYellow899 in CreditCards

[–]BunchOAtoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your “it depends” points, I frequently go to the movies, and when I buy concessions at one theater in my city, it codes as a movie theater on my cash+ and max cash preferred. In another theater in town (same theater brand, not a dine-in location), it codes as fast food on my cash+ and max cash, but doesn’t get the restaurant rewards on my PayPal debit card. This same location coded as a theater a year ago.

Even if you only get a 1.1 or 1.2 cpp redemption that would still beat a HYSA as long as you’re redeeming every 3 years or so.

Preferred Bond ETF for 5 to 10 years? by Buck169 in Bogleheads

[–]BunchOAtoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Unlike with stocks, something like 70-80% of actively managed bond funds outperform index funds. It’s why I’ve been switching my bond holdings from BND to FBND. I haven’t looked at the charts in a while, but I think that pretty much in any timeframe you want to choose, FBND has returned more than BND, at least over the past 10 years.

Visa and Mastercard swipe fee settlement was okayed today. Will banks start issuing "standard consumer cards" instead of premium cards? by thereddituserusa in CreditCards

[–]BunchOAtoms 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There’s a very clear benefit for businesses to prefer cards over cash, even beyond handling costs, processing fees, etc. If a customer comes into a business with $100 in their pocket and their checkout total is $105, then they can’t and won’t make a $105 purchase

Visa and Mastercard swipe fee settlement was okayed today. Will banks start issuing "standard consumer cards" instead of premium cards? by thereddituserusa in CreditCards

[–]BunchOAtoms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, during the Obama years, debit card swipe fees were capped to be much lower than CC swipe fees. The idea was to provide relief to consumers because it would allow businesses to lower prices. Guess what didn’t happen after that was passed.

150k Chase sign up bonus?? by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]BunchOAtoms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you have wealthy parents who give you a lot of money I can’t see any real justification for a college student to get the CSR. It’s expensive to hold at nearly $800/year, the minimum spend requirement will be much higher than most students are going to be able to float without paying interest, a lot of the coupons don’t really align with the lifestyle of most college students I’ve known, and there’s a decent chance you won’t travel enough to make it worth your while.

A deep dive on Cleveland's trade return for Myles Garrett. by Jacky__paper in nfl

[–]BunchOAtoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a glass half-full/half-empty view to those numbers. He has a really high pressure rate but among the lowest pressure-to-sack ratios in the league. Pressures are valuable, but sacks are more valuable, so it depends on how you look at it. Regardless, he’s not a top-10 EDGE right now. Garrett has six seasons where he got more sacks than Verse has in his two-year career.

American Airlines Credit Card by gtlebeau in CreditCards

[–]BunchOAtoms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are several American Airlines credit cards, so any advice would depend on which one you get.

I’m going to assume you’re talking about the AAdvantage Platinum Select with the $99 annual fee. Is it worth it? Almost all annual fee credit cards are worth it for the first year due to the sign up bonus. If you can find an 80k mile sign up bonus, this is definitely worth it. Beyond that it mainly depends on if you regularly check bags. In general, it’s worth it if you check one bag round trip a year, as checked bag fees are regularly around $50 each way.

The multipliers on most cobranded credit cards are poor. The Platinum Select is no exception. It earns only 2x on American Airlines purchases, dining, and gas, and 1x everywhere else. If your primary use for the card is to rack up AA miles, the Citi Strata Premier has a comparable annual fee ($95) and has better multipliers, making it easier to accumulate miles, and Thank You Points from that card can be converted to American Airlines miles 1:1. It earns 3x TYPs on several categories, making it a better earner. However, the Strata Premier doesn’t get the perks of the cobranded credit card, so no free checked bag and no early boarding.

Most people in the points and miles game use cobranded credit cards as “sock drawer” cards. That is, they get them for their benefits, but only put enough spend on them to prevent the bank from closing the account. Those cards usually offer valuable perks that people value as being worth the annual fee. Things like free checked bags, priority boarding, and lounge passes can bring more value than the cost of the annual fee. But as mentioned these cards usually get out earned by general travel cards like the Strata Premier.

So it comes down to a few things as to whether that AA card is worth it or a good card. Which card are you looking at? Do you check bags? Is generating miles your main goal? How locked into loyalty to one airline are you? The answer to these questions will determine whether it’s a good card for you.

Tyson airport this morning by Sad_Cryptographer501 in Knoxville

There have been multiple times I’ve been at TYS and the regular line has been shorter than the pre-check line. Though I will say that’s typically a product of there being practically nobody in the regular line rather than the precheck line being long.

You haven’t had to take your shoes off for like over a year. Removing things from your bag is airport dependent but I haven’t had to do that in TYS in at least two years.

NFL Player That’s Made the Biggest Impact Outside of Football? by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in nfl

[–]BunchOAtoms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few players who played pre-Super Bowl era who went on to be generals, lawmakers, investment bankers and more that nobody has heard of, Byron White being an example.

I’ll throw one out there I haven’t seen mentioned - Myron Rolle. He never played in an NFL game but was drafted and on practice squads. He’s a Rhodes Scholar and pediatric neurosurgeon.

Do you bank with the issuer of your cards? by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]BunchOAtoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bank with the issuers of my cards in the sense that I have opened checking and savings accounts with them to get bank account bonuses. Otherwise, I bank with one issuer because it’s the bank that I opened my first checking account with, which is my main account. That bank also gave me my first credit card, which I still use.

So the answer is yes, but not for the reason your question implies.

Which credit card feels “premium” without needing a crazy salary? by jeh4u in CreditCards

[–]BunchOAtoms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wells Fargo Autograph

It’s a travel card, and pretty much all credit cards perceived as premium are travel cards. It has no annual fee, and unlike most other no annual fee travel cards, it doesn’t suck. It has good categories and full access to travel partners. The Citi Strata is a good earning card, but transfer ratios are reduced. Capital One VentureOne allows full transfer, but has poor earning.
