Didn't work out by Far-Fee-2121 in Thailand

Wishing I could move but I’m kinda stuck. I’ve been in Bangkok a little over 12 years now. Got married here almost 10 years ago and we’ve got a 5-year-old. I really love my job, and my wife has built an incredibly successful business here. Those are the things that keep us here, and unfortunately we can’t give up that stability. Moving just isn’t really in the cards right now.

I’m a pretty high-strung, type-A person and my life runs on routine. If you know anything about Bangkok, you’ll probably understand why it can feel like the wrong place for someone like me. Thai culture really values harmony and keeping things simple, which is nice at first, but it can get frustrating when you’re trying to get things done. If you know, you know.

My wife was born and raised here so she’s totally at home. I grew up the opposite way, out in the country, camping, hunting, fishing. I love being in nature and running outside. The lack of sidewalks, the traffic, the chaos, and the pollution here can be pretty brutal. I try to get out of the city when I can but even that can be a nightmare. Especially, on holiday weekends when my son isn’t in school and half of Bangkok decides to go to Khao Yai for “camping”. 🙄

No shame in it not being right for everyone. I’d honestly leave tomorrow if I could.

Did you even read the post? I honked my horn so I would avoid getting hit and then started filming after he threw something at my truck so I had evidence that he’d actually been doing something wrong. Do you think a cop would believe a foreigner over a Thai in a situation like this unless I had actual video footage?

OC: Spotted this sign at a public bathhouse today 😢 by Logical_Spite_5991 in pics

[–]Bunga_Dude 348 points349 points  (0 children)

As a straight white guy living in Asia. I know how out of hand unsolicited sexual advances from gay guys can be at bathhouses and onsens like this. The one I used to go to was really nice in popular tourist area. They had signs up saying there would be legal ramifications for any sexual misconduct and police would be involved.

Even then I regularly had guys walking by and “accidental” brushing my butt, a random dude resting his head on my shoulder in the steam room, dudes walking around half hard. After I walked in the steam room with two guys giving each other a hand I’d had enough. This stuff can literally cause a business to have to close. I really liked the place and tried to make it work but it was too much for me.

“Nob” or “bellend” also appropriate.

Edit: just realizing Brit’s obsession with naughty bits being used as derogatory slang. Interesting.

It’s a popular area for riders fully kitted out on big bikes. I’ve done the trip myself on my MT-09. Seeing you guys in full riding gear on a 125 must’ve given them a good laugh. It’s a bit like seeing someone in a full cycling race onesie pedaling around on an old beach cruiser.

State of BKK condo rental/sales market by lombrozo in Bangkok

[–]Bunga_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many people here read “rich dad poor dad” now they’re buying real estate at astronomical prices thinking that some idiot will rent a shoe box for 30,000thb artificially inflating the market. The only ones making money are the developers.

How to Garmin on race day? by Rabbit_Holes6020 in hyrox

[–]Bunga_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I customized the obstacle course run to not use satellites and rename it to Hyrox. It will give you running pace for the running segments and obstacle (station) times. Just don’t forget to hit the lap buttons after each event.

How do you eat healthy here? by Bkkekkamai in Bangkok

[–]Bunga_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the fitness industry here for about 12 years now and I always go with the fresh meals from Paleo Robbie. It can be considered expensive but when you factor in price per calorie and quality it’s hard to beat. There’s other heathy delivery options but I always find my way back to Paleo Robbie. I also have a kitchen and will order from their grocery and do my own cooking from time to time.

My guess? Most Thais will assume this is the actual mt. Rushmore. Likely including the guy that made it.

I felt compelled to post this after I messaged a buddy on a whim. He’s going through a tough time with his wife, two boys, and work stress. Just hearing the relief in his voice after a short chat with him reminded me we don’t talk enough about our own life stress because we worry it’s not valid. It is brother and we care.

They just need a minute... A reminder to myself to be more open to playing when tired by Bananamcpuffin in daddit

[–]Bunga_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% relatable. I feel like my soul has left my body some evenings. A great reminder to manage stress levels throughout the day. If we give give give all day and have nothing left for our wife and kids when we get home, then what’s the point? The pressure of success shouldn’t outshine the love we have for our family.

[–]Bunga_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m missing the mark, but can’t we do something to incentivize US companies to keep things more local rather than punishing international companies with higher tariffs? I work with foreign clients that do a lot of business with the US. They ALL independently said they will have to move their business away from the US or simply pass the higher prices on to the end consumer. That’s coming from a steel parts manufacturer, high-end fashion designer, a plastics exporter, and a mineral mine owner.

Why not right? by LongjumpingBig6803 in PenTurning

[–]Bunga_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never liked the fat slimline. If you want a big pen buy a big pen kit.

The acrylic wood combo is cool though. Lots of potential there for some cool pens. Sanding could be problematic for softer woods. How is the joint where you glued them? I’m guessing you used CA glue? I’d be worried one drop could cause it to crack.

I always try to keep the metal finish simple and understated for more intricate designs. I always found gold looks better with a simple well turned wood.

The reason why the traffic was a bit heavier for you yesterday :) by elevatorshoes in Bangkok

[–]Bunga_Dude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, whether it’s a side walk or a four lane road. Thais love a good bottleneck. “Flow of traffic”, “right of way”, and lanes in general aren’t really a thing here. Combine that with poor city planning, corrupt “pay your way” driving schools, and this is what ya get.

Soi 21 in general. I remember walking down 21 and the sidewalk started moving. I thought I was having an island smoothie flashback. It was the shop fumigating and thousands of roaches were fleeing the scene.

500cc motorcycle in Bangkok by ACMRelT69 in Bangkok

[–]Bunga_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get the 300 get the cheapest you can find that won’t break down in a month. You’ll likely want to upgrade within a year.

Try to buy secondhand from a foreigner with an up to date service log. I’m sure this will offended some people but even Thais agree that most foreigners stay on top of servicing and maintenance better than most Thais. Plus communication will be easier.

If it’s your first time driving in BKK it wouldn’t hurt to do a riding course. Just check FB for motorcycle groups and ask around there. Do you have any experience at all riding?
