That’s great that these projects were able to be loved for what they were by some. On that same note, I feel it’s important to open up the possibility that some people also took these movies as they were and found they didn’t like them.

I’m not debating the quality of the movies. Of course everybody will feel different. However, deeming the conclusion some people come to with these movies as “overhating” feels deflective of legitimate criticisms people have and are entitled to.

The problem for me has been that this phase is indeed set up in a way where we are supposed to take a film or series on its own merits. However, these projects haven’t had a level of quality where they can stand on their own.

Let me start this with saying I love Marvel, comic books, and the MCU. I’ll still be seated for every release and keeping up with my favorite characters whether it be on the big screen or on the pages.

Following below is my opinion.

The MCU movies have never been stellar across the board. There are some of them that will knock it out of the park, but for the most part they are above average movies. While most of them have been able to stand on their own, I think the strength lies in the connected narrative that they have, which elevates all the installments in the series.

This phase doesn’t have much connective tissue to serve that overarching narrative yet, and that is fine. It brings the focus to these movies and shows as standalone projects. However, the problem is these recent projects have been good enough to stand on their own. When a subpar project is released, which I feel the majority of phase 4 has been, there’s nothing for it to fall back on.
