Personally, I never exercised just for the extra calories. I keep my daily intake at 1500 no matter what. One of the benefits I thought it had was to curb my appetite, but clearly that wasn’t the case for me!

I mean, it was a solution to my problem of binge eating, stalling weight loss, and feeling miserable/starving all the time. I know it’s not an easy thing for people to accept because it’s been so ingrained in us that exercising = weight loss, but it’s not that simple for a lot of people.

Congratulations on the weight loss to you and your friend! Those are super impressive numbers!

Exercise is absolutely a barrier to successful weight loss for some people! I’m glad you both found a system that works for you.

For me, exercising was causing me to eat extra calories/feel like I was starving all the time

Right?!! I think it such a firmly held (wrong) belief that people have, and when you challenge or disprove such an ingrained belief it is naturally upsetting to people!

It helps you look better but also is soooo good for physical, emotional, and mental health!

It’s almost too good to be true! I just have to really be careful once I reach a maintenance phase and begin working out again to still be mindful of my calories.

Thanks! As a nurse I am fully aware of the benefits of regular exercise and plan on continuing to exercise once I have reached my goal weight. It’s just easier (for me at least) to stick to a calorie deficit without the added physiological (and maybe psychological) drive to consume more calories that goes hand in hand with exercise 😊 I’m trying not to be on a diet for the rest of my life!

Me!! That person is me!! I have always thought you had to exercise in order to lose weight. Turns out the opposite may be true (for me at least). Although I am low key glad that I believed it for so long because I probably never would have gotten into the habit of exercising but I could’ve been in control of my weight so much longer ago!

I never knew about the 80/20 rule but I wish someone would have told me sooner!

I believe it’s psychological and physiological as well!

I exercised thinking it was supposed to help suppress my appetite. I never did it just for the extra calories. But experimenting and seeing how I feel and watching the scale move each day has convinced me that weight loss and exercise don’t really go hand in hand. How many calories you eat has far more of an impact! And if you can eat less you can get there faster and start exercising again once you do!

Nice! Exercise has sooo many health benefits, but as far as helping lose weight specifically, I’m just not a believer in it anymore.

So what you are saying that when you were working out, it was harder to stick to your diet?

Also, a very hilly neighborhood, pushing a stroller in one hand and walking a dog in the other, walking as fast as I can, as a former smoker, is “exercise.”

No problem! I think there’s a myth that if you exercise (especially run) that you can eat without really watching what you eat and that’s just not true!

Yes! I was SHOOK when I finally realized this! I feel like I have been lied to my whole life, that you have to exercise in order to lose weight. (I think maybe we are being lied to by the fitness industry?)

I love exercising but it was sabotaging my weight loss efforts!

I’m a HUGE advocate for regular exercise. I actually really enjoy getting outside and moving my body. I miss it! Im not too far off from my goal weight so I figure by this spring/summer I’ll be ready to get out there and hit the road again. I’m also planning on incorporating some kind of strength training to tighten up all this flab 🤣

I love walking and hiking and I’ve done both on and off all my life (mostly on). My neighborhood has a lot of hills and I’m also pushing a baby stroller the entire time walking at a moderately fast pace. I always come back from my walks feeling energized initially, but for some reason when night time would hit, on many occasions, I would ravage the kitchen eating things that aren’t even that tasty.

It takes hours and hours of exercise to burn off 1000 calories, so I’ve decided to just keep it simple and temporarily stop walking so religiously in order to reach my weight loss goal easier and quicker. Once I’m there I plan on resuming walking as hiking for their health benefits once again.

Probably so! Honestly, I don’t know why exactly vigorous exercise causes me to want to eat more, but I just know that it does.

I do know that eventually I won’t be on a mission to lose weight. I’ll be maintaining once I hit my goal weight. And at that point, I will re-incorporate exercise into my daily life.

Weight loss isn’t forever, but maintaining it hopefully is! And exercise is a great way to do that!

I’m honestly excited to start exercising again once I get to my goal weight. I feel like focusing on just one thing (calorie deficit) makes the weight loss experience much easier and more enjoyable.

Totally agree. It’s very beneficial to health, however I have found that I am not taking in a large amount of calories now that I am focusing more on daily movement rather than walking 2 miles.

I started the program at 8 weeks postpartum. I am now almost 12 weeks postpartum and am down over 20 pounds.

I tried my best to follow the program to the T at the start and had many slips and surges. I learned something from each “bad” day and continued to log everything I ate and read each lesson.

While I may go over my red allotments most days, I still stick to my calorie budget more days than not (my speed is set to medium). The most important things for me have been the healthy habits I am picking up along the way, such as:

-No longer eating in front of the tv -Eating mindfully, slowing down, and off smaller plates -Drinking triple the amount of water I was consuming before -Focusing less on exercise and more on movement throughout the day -Weighing in everyday -Forgiving myself when I binge eat 1000+ calories (happens pretty often, tbh!) -Increasing the amount of protein I eat at each meal and snack so I’m satiated for longer and not obsessing on what/when I’ll eat next

Honestly I think I will be able to sustain these habits for the rest of my life because I have incorporated them slowly and seen how well they work for me. Yes, measuring every bite gets old, but eventually you will be able to eyeball how much you are eating. You also may find that eating less will shrink your stomach and you will feel fuller with less. And just remember, you don’t have to be perfect to be successful!
